They need to get out of this soft zone and start attacking Warner.

The Bills are putting themselves in a bad position
jad1 replied to ieatcrayonz's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The Titans still have the opportunity to be 1-3 vs the NFC. If the Bills win the next week, the best they can finish against the NFC is 3-1, which loses us the tie breaker against Tennessee. -
I think you nailed it here. The Bills did make some stupid mistakes, which didn't help them, but they played out of their own end zone most of game. That seriously limits the play calling, especially with a young team who is within a field goal or touchdown of the lead. The Bills were able to finally bust it out of there late in the 3rd, and when that happened they took control of the game. Lechler's net average today was 46 yards. Four of his six punts were inside the 20, and I think most of those were inside the 10. He was the Raiders MVP.

Anyone else love the Whitner late hit on Higgins?
jad1 replied to elegantelliotoffen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep, it was a perfect pass into the seam of the zone. When that happens up the middle in a cover-two, it usually goes for six. -

It could have been Youboty who also blew the play. He was lined up against Higgins in the slot, but jumped to the outside when Higgins made his move to the inside. Whether that was Youboty's assignment or not, it looks like he 'released' Higgins to Poz a second too early. -
Did anyone catch the jack@ss CBS announce crew..
jad1 replied to Heels20X6's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, no doubt. He was basically saying that it would take more time to drive the 14 yards than it would to stop the Raiders and drive at least 70 yards. There are reasons why some ex-jocks are in the announcing booth instead of on the sidelines. Especially since Edwards threw the TD on the play after his statement. Anyone else catch the "Upset Sunday" graphic that CBS showed right after the Raiders TD bomb? It showed that the home Pats, Bills, and Giants were about to be upset. Of course, the Bills and Giants came back. The Pats, well, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! -

Since when is YPC the measuring stick for a Roethlisberger-type performance? Do you have a sliding scale? What's the YPC for a Kelly-like performance? No turnovers, a TD pass, a 50-yard PI call, and a WIN on the road in the division (when was the last time that happened?) is enough for me to say this was an excellent outing by Losman, among others on the team. Why anyone would give two sh*ts about YPC under these circumstances is beyond me. I'm just relieved that Losman hasn't turned any of the DBs he's faced into his own personal Ty Law. Save the over-analysis for your posting orgy after the next Bills loss. Boy, I wonder who you'll blame? -

Did you watch the game, or just read the stat line? 83 yards, 1 TD, and no turnovers in a game in which the Bills never trailed, controlled the tempo with the running game and defense, and won on the road. The Bills didn't need a Manning performance today, they needed a Roethlisberger performance, and Losman delivered. -
And without the Bills, you Canadian fans would be left with only CFL games to attend. YOU should be thanking US instead of dissing us and fantasizing about stealing our team. It's the least you could do for the NY taxpayers who put up the $63 million to keep the team in the area, for you to enjoy.

Gary Hogeboom, October 4,1987, throws 5 TDs as the Colts crush the scab Bills. I'm convinced that performance got him that spot on Survivor -- Guatamala (what else could it have been?)
-
Fred Jackson just scored. They should give him the start next week because unlike Willis, he didn't fumble the ball, which gave the Bengals a TD. And besides, what do the Bills have to lose? They're going to be 1-15 this year, and they might as well be the first team in league history to have a starting RB from Coe college.
-
In preseason, scores don't matter, and the guys who look the best do get the roster spots. And while players are not judged by the American Idol crew, they are judged by a large group of coaches and scouts.

There are no magical trades that will help the Bills. The Rams or Ravens aren't going to trade Pace or Ogden to the Bills. And the Bills aren't going to (willingly) face Brady twice a year with King or Youboty starting at corner. The best way for the team to get better is to have their young guys mature quickly, and have the coaches improve the team's execution.

Frank Gore had a huge game this past weekend. Draft him in the first round.

Latest report from the hospital pc is that the only injuries are to his face and head, which required 7 hours of surgery. His knees are all right. So he broke his face on a windshield while riding without a helmet on a motorcycle that, rumor has it, can go mach 3. What was everyone arguing about again?

"Fine. Well, what SHOULD the Bills have done?"
jad1 replied to Stiffler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Baltimore was also said to be targetting Ngata, and actually traded up to get him. They also did not take a safety the first three rounds of the draft. Perhaps Baltimore was prediciting that the Bills were going to take Ngata, so they were planning to go with Whitner. -
Seeing as how the Bills finished 5-11, and have serious questions at several positions, a quantity over quality strategy would be a good one. I never made the argument that the Bills should reach for a o-lineman in the first round. My argument is that they stockpile picks in the 3rd round to catch those players that fall at multiple positions. By trading back in the 1st round, Whitner might be gone, but Jason Allen and Jimmy Williams are still there. These guys might have more questions than Whitner, but if they do work out, the Bills have an extra 3rd pick to possibly catch a falling Eric Winston. If the Bills only area of need is defense, this is an outstanding draft. And maybe, with the Bills signings on the offensive side of the ball, that's the case. We'll see as the season progresses. But if the Bills go into next season, and we're all still arguing if Losman is an NFL caliber QB or not ('it's not his fault, it's the line's'), the Bills will be in serious trouble.

So do you believe that of the remaining players on the draft board, only Whitner and McCargo fit Jauron's defense? Whitner is better than Allen and a 3rd rounder? or Williams and a 3rd rounder? Could they have kept their 3rd rounder and drafted Wroten in the 2nd round? Could they have traded up in the 3rd, spending a 4th or 5th to move up to take Wroten in 3rd? Is McCargo better than Justice and Wroten? I like the players that Levy drafted, but thier apparent inflexiblity in targeting specific guys doesn't seem like a good strategy with needs at multiple positions. That's where the criticism is coming from. Who knows. maybe the oline will be solid with the new FAs, and will be able to keep the QB upright all season. Maybe Losman and Nall will be judged on their own merits, and the Bills will have a solid #1 QB at the end of the season, and the improved defense will have the Bills on the right track. I hope so, because I really want to see Levy succeed.

Actually I believe the opposite is true. This is an extemely risky draft for Marv. In the first 3 rounds, where most teams draft their starters, he's drafted a starting safety, a DT that plays the same position as Larry Tripplett, and a nickel back. In other words, one every-down starter in 3 the first three rounds. He could have had 5 picks in the first round, which would have let him address more positions than DB and DT. By targetting specific players, he's completely neglected the offensive line in the draft. There are multiple questions about his strategy. Was Whitner really in danger of being drafted in the top 15? Problaby not. Were Whitner and McCargo the only players left in the draft at their positions who fit into Jauron's defense? Probably not. Was the need for a nickel back more pressing than a guard or OT? Maybe, maybe not. In following his strategy, Levy has locked in the starters on the O line. Will his FAs be better than Donahoe's? Will Peters continue to develop or turn into the next Robert Hicks? Who is the backup at tackle? This is an extremely risky strategy. If the O line holds up and the young draft picks deliver, Marv will look like a genius. If not, look for another frustrating season of watching a QB merry-go-round, leading to huge questions going into next year's draft.
-
Will Whitner and McCargo play well enough to justify giving up two third rounders. I think that's the ultimate question here. Since the Bills will get only one first day olineman, either Gandy or Reyes will probably be starting day one. Is holding at 8 and drafting Whitner worth that? Will trading a 3rd to draft McCargo be worth it? Are these guys really that good? I hope so. No doubt the Bills will have a good chance to field an improved defense this year, but their offense line might not show any improvement at all. Marv and company have taken a huge gamble this year. One that I hope pays off.

There's no way to paint a pretty picture here
jad1 replied to SoCal Pat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Marv could have had traded down and had 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. Instead they locked on two players and gave up two 3rd rounders. Obviously, the Bills brass chose not to have the draft fall to them, and decided to be more proactive. The problem is that they now have fewer 1st day picks to continue to rebuild the offensive line. So Marv and company definitely knew who they wanted, and paid the price to get them. He's really decreased his margain of error, which might be seen as too risky at this time. Many saw this as a quantity over quantity type draft. -
No doubt, It's amateur hour.
