how good is this D with Byrd and Gilmore?
jad1 replied to billsfans126's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Byrd wants to keep his market value high, he should get back onto the field ASAP and start taking snaps in Pettine's defense. -
I think it's an old picture. The limited jerseys show the toilet seat, but I bought one and it has the full (right) collar. Authentic jerseys should match what they're wearing this year.

It looks like the Panthers were jamming the middle to guard against a dive by the QB or RB, and left single coverage outside. They botched the coverage. Have to wonder if they were worried about a keeper, especially after watching EJ almost score on the previous play.

Buffalo vs. Carolina: Official Game Day Thread

Give Marrone credit for the 2pt conversion call. It wasn't a given to go for it at that point, but in the end it was a difference between a win and overtime. -
Sure, because over the last 10 years, Bills=Patriots.

Prediction - Kirk Cousins lights it up today

That's only because they were too busy making decisions about awful veteran QBs (Edwards, Fitz, Thigpen, Young) to focus their attention on making decisions about awful QBs in the draft. -
2012 Buffalo Bills: One of the worst NFL defenses of all time?
jad1 replied to Jetman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Moorman's punting average is slightly lower than his career average, so Gailey cuts him. Wannaclue's defense is putting up historically horrible numbers, and Chan says, 'nothing to see here.' And if Johnson had 30 carries instead of just 18 today, the Titans would have laid another 50 spot on the Bills. -
Wouldn't you tank the season for the opportunity to pick the first cornerback in the draft next year?
-
It should, but it won't be until the end of the season. We're quickly approaching a decade and a half of horrible football.
-
Nix is horrible. He needs to go.
-
It's going to take another 3 years to fix the QB, LB, and WR positions on this team. Nix has wasted the last three years.

Our roster is good. Our coaching is bad.

The point is that other teams in the league have drafted QBs to develop, without the expectation that the guy will be their next franchise QB. I understand that Nix doesn't want to overdraft, but wouldn't be worth a 3rd rounder to see if a guy like Mallet could get his head straight? Wouldn't it be something to have a guy on the roster who could throw the ball deep, outside the numbers? Would you have liked to see that guy out there when the Bills were down by 20 in the fourth quarter, just to see if the team could develop a deep passing game? Teams can draft developmental QBs. The Texans did that in the 5th round with Yates and watched him win a playoff game for them. The Seahawks took Wilson in the 3rd and watched him beat their high-priced FA for the starting job. Do you think that the Pats felt they were drafting their franchise QB in the 6th round? Of course not, but they were following the accepted NFL practice of drafting developmental QBs in the mid to later rounds of the draft. Nix doesn't follow this practice. It's as though he believes that if he can't hit a home run with a QB pick in the draft, he's not even going to take a swing. Most other NFL GMs do not follow his approach. -

Andy Dalton was a 2nd round pick. TJ Yates a fifth rounder. Mallet a 3rd rounder. John Skelton a 5th rounder. Aside from Dalton, none of these guys required an "overdraft." You wouldn't want one of these guys on the roster as a developmental prospect instead of Jackson or Thigpen? And if Nix didn't like these guys, but he likes Fitz, I have to wonder, what the hell is wrong with Nix? -
Yeah, and they were able to move Brady off his spot, and that's the key. If you can't move him with four, you have to send five or six. The point is that you're not going to beat Brady with coverage if you don't pressure him.

Colin Kaepernick [get 'er dun!]

The 49ers won't consider giving him up until he's in the final year of his contract. -
No choice for me; they're my birthright. They're mine till I die, the good and the bad. And I'm happy with that.

Run and stop the run. It would have been nice to take at least one thing away from the Pats offense. -
Nix is terrible at being a GM, period.

I don't buy that. QB is the most position on the roster, and NFL teams continually try to improve that position. The vast majority of poor teams in the league have a drafted young QB to add to their roster, and most are starting. Even good teams like NE, GB, and Houston have drafted young QBs to backup their All Pro starters. It doesn't have to be a first rounder, but these franchises realize the need to develop young QBs. The fact that Nix defies conventional wisdom by ignoring the QB position is the draft, whether Chan wants to replace Fitz or not, is outright malpractice. Also, take a look at the emphasis that good teams put on linebackers. LB is the most important defensive position and sets the physical tone for the defense. NE has three high draft picks playing LB. Denver has drafted a stud at LB. SF has built their defense around two solid young LBs. Baltimore always drafts LBs early in the draft. For the most part, Nix has ignored the linebacker position in the early rounds of the draft, despite the fact that the Bills have routinely given up over 400 yard games the last few seasons. Again, Nix defies NFL convention by ignoring the LB position early in the draft. You can't build a winner in the NFL without quality players at the QB and LB positions. Nix has done very little to stock these positions on the Bills roster in the draft or FA. -
RB is one of the few positions of strength for the Bills, and they are in good shape with either Jackson or Spiller on the field. Gailey could have made a better call on the goal line (how about putting a FB in there to help lead the way on that dive), but in general, the offense is going to go as far as these two guys can carry it. The Bills are going to need them both, because judging by Wannstedt's defense, the Bills are going to have to score 40+ points a game to beat the better teams on their schedule.
-
The way to fix that is to beat the Pats consistently. The only thing the media loves more than building a guy up is to tear him down.
-
I agree. This was a lousy playcall for the personnel in the game. Spiller vs Wilfork is not a good matchup.
-
Any more clarity needed on where the issues are?

I agree with the concept and am on board, but I doubt that Wilson even knows who Kelly is. Wilson doesn't hire strangers; he hires guys who he is comfortable with. And we've all seen the results of his hiring practices the last 13 years.
