why not call a timeout there? it was obvious we were too far and needed that 1st down.

also why did McD call a timeout on the previous Browns drive, right before we gave up the game winning play to Laundry. his clock management skills are an absolute joke

I've noticed that McD will sometimes call timeout on Defense for what, I think, he considers to be potentially drive stopping plays. He did a similar thing against NE once, where he called a TO on 4th and 1 in order to have the right defensive formation. It worked, NE punted instead, but the Bills lost anyways so I doubt too many people noticed.

The first year was the breakdown of the old regime, last year was the first in the rebuild, this is only year two with a very young core. Next year will be the year we get more talent at key positions and will be where we need to be on better, more consistent playing level.

There is a process here and we want it all to go faster but it cant . We have to work with what we have and its going to take time for these players and the next set of players to push this team to the next level

Another thing i want to address here about today's game is McDermott made the right decision to kick the FG at the end of the game. Many of you are proclaiming Jauron Ball when in fact McD went for it twice on 4th down earlier in the game and the team FAILED !!

What makes you think he should try for it a third time when on this day against this team they couldn't convert on 4th down and the offense overall was inconsistent?? McDermott needs to be confident they will make it and with the way they were playing he could not make that decision and made the right call by kicking the FG and if it was made we then have a chance in overtime. Hauschka was not good today but normally he is, this game maybe showing he is declining but he was our best choice at the time.

I honestly do not get the Jauron comparison. By that logic we should have compared Rex and Gailey because both had good offenses and bad defenses. McD goes for it on 4th a lot and we had plays today that were too aggressive. I guess if McD is intentionally icing leads, which I'm not convinced he is doing, then that is one similarity.

    Gotta give Gruden some credit.

All last season and up through this offseason he got a ton of crap & was the butt of a lot of jokes. Now here the Raiders are at a respectable 5-4.

At the very least, they're moving in the right direction. Hats off to him.

To add to that he is also going to get a borderline top 10 pick from Chicago.

Could be a "hornets nest"/"buzzsaw" opponent next week.  However, it could also be a "Bickering Browns" opponent, this one is hard to put a finger on as it should be an easy win for a 6-2 team.

There was a year where the Eagles went 8-8 or something, but would beat teams like the Patriots and lose to bottom dwellers. I feel like this Cleveland is worse than that, but has that same potential. I agree with you that this is a hard game to predict.

Who cares. They are likely making the playoffs and have the 3rd most cap space in the NFL next year behind the Dolphins and Colts.

Insiders claim next year is when the team really thought it was "go time" and this would be a transition year.

But, buoyed by one of the easiest schedules in NFL history they should coast to the 5th seed in the AFC with little competition.

This is the dumb stuff media talks about. At the end of the year nobody remembers what your schedule looked like, they only remember what your final record was, if you made the playoffs or not and what happened when you got there.

    But muh emotions!

Seriously though. The media lives or dies by generating clicks and the more they can rile up people and get a reaction the better and nothing evokes reactions quite like hyperbole. Next year there will be a similar article about another 6-2 team.

This is my favorite homer stance. You can't be critical of the obvious inadequacies of the team because they beat a 1 and something dumpster fire.

This team has beaten the Jets, Dolphins, Redskins, Bengals, Giants, and Titans, which are a combined 9-41. None has a winning record. They've looked bad in a number of them.

But yeah, if everyone hear drinking the Koolaid is OK with winning and "not changing what's working" I can't want until they get steamrolled in the playoffs... if they make it. Maybe then you'll be open to assessing this team's weaknesses? Probably not.

Completely agree with this. I just hate trying to blame previous regimes. It’s like what every new politician taking office tries to do. It’s disingenuous.

The irony is that economically the smartest thing to do during an NFL draft is to trade down due to injuries and simply a scouting departments inability to be accurate 100% of the time. And despite that, this regime seems way more likely to trade up.

I remember this game.  Interesting to note that the Bills had some pretty good skill players back when Edwards played.  I think it's fair to say that Lee Evans & Fred Jackson are more explosive then anyone on the current Bill's O.

I think I would say that the 2007 team's top players were better, but that this team has better depth. I'm not worried about Kroft jumping out of the back of the endzone to catch a ball.

Leaders who refuse to accept criticism aren't leaders - they're tyrants, and one way or another, they always lose their power. I've worked for some, and the damage they caused was devastating.

It is, to me, amazingly ironic. Coaches have a job of evaluating players, identifying mistakes they are making and working tirelessly to fix them. It seems so strange that the idea of applying that same feedback to themselves is novel.

  10. Hey all,

I know the general sentiment here about PFF, but as a guy who enjoys numbers and statistics I figured I would bring up a point anyways.

As you know PFF tends to be quite critical of Allen where our forum debates to what extent that critique is warranted, something I'd mention though is to what extent PFF seems to neglect mentioning Allen's improvement these past couple of weeks.

By my count, and I don't have elite so I can't go back and check, Allen's grade has trended up significantly since the Patriots game. Note the game by game scores are guesses based of Allen's overall grade, so technically they are almost non-guesses thanks to math.

Week 1 score-57ish slightly below average Total rating 57ish

Week 2 score-75ish strong game by Allen Total rating 66ish

Week 3 score-52ish below average game for Allen, Total rating 60ish

Week 4 score-34ish extremely poor game for Allen, Total rating 50ish

Unsurprisingly we see Allen have an extremely bad game against the Patriots similar to everyone else who has played them.

Week 5 score-70ish strong game by Allen Total rating 57ish

Week 6 score-75ish strong game by Allen Total rating 60ish.

Allen has played two great games by their measures and yet one hardly hears a peep about that. In addition to that Allen now has an average grade as a QB, especially important noting that last year his passing grade at the end of the season is poor.

The Bills still have a lot of kinks to work out, but the fact is that Allen seems to be improving and if that is something he continues to do we have a lot to feel excited about even if the experts who see it hardly comment on it.
