He's made Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick look like quality NFL starting QB's, and things seem to be on the upswing for Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel under his watch.
I'm sure that the cuts are a collaborative effort between the coaches and Whaley, but the quote used for the title actually applies to Whaley stocking the shelves (53) and Rex picking ingredients (gameday 46).
Yes, I believe if we go a game and a half where the QB shows no redeeming qualities the backup will come in. I do not, however, think it is likely that we see a 6 quarter slump.
Just based on things I've heard here and elsewhere I believe they are shopping EJ for a trade. If they do not find anything worthwhile before the next cut deadline they will cut Cassel. I am hoping for the latter.
I certainly hope that he stays on the team, and in a way, yes it does. They don't have big money tied up in the position, so it really lets them evaluate and then pay the guy that earns it.
It was Tyrod banking on himself. Basically he and the organization agreed that if he proved to be starting quality in the first two years they would work out a new deal that pays starting QB money.
Tyrod's contract:
2015: ~$3M if he is the starter and we make the playoffs
2016: ~$4M if he is the starter and we make the playoffs
2017: Void if either of the prior happens or he is on the roster a week after 2016 SB
As an avid Tyrod supporter since he was signed, I can agree that I don't think it's 8 games. I think it's somewhere between 6 and 8 consecutive quarters of poor play.
I'm going to stick to Tyrod, as I have since he was a freshman at Tech. If he's as potent during the season as he has been in the preseason I could get on board with TD Taylor
