That's what I've been saying all offseason. We have people on here hyper concerned about filling our holes at WR, RT, QB, LB, S, CB with 6 draft picks. The simple answer is we aren't going to fill them. I think it's pretty clear this is going to set up as a growing pains year, there was little reason to cut guys like Aaron Williams and Graham and sitting on cap space that could have signed a difference maker or two if the team has any sort of realistic ideas of making a playoff push. There's going to be a lot of young guys competing for major roles on the roster and that (combined with a tough schedule) is going to cost us games, but hopefully it was also result in having cheap young depth all over the roster, a couple of guys really breaking out and a better foundation moving forward. I believe Zach Brown is looked at as a guy who it would be nice to have, but not someone we are going to beat the highest offer on the table to retain. I honestly can't blame Zach for attempting to cash in coming off a "pro bowl" year, but it seems the league is pretty wise to what he was for his entire career before last year.

Honestly none of those guys strike me as scheme fits for McD's defense. The Cover-2 / Zone defense basically requires freaks at linebacker who can cover A LOT of field (Thomas Davis / Keuchley / Shaq Thompson are all slightly undersized for traditional linebackers but can really run). Zach is the closest to that model of the entire bunch, but he played in a somewhat similar scheme in Tennessee and really wasn't that successful. I really worry about overpaying him off his career year for a scheme he may not be great in. The real shame is Kiko and Bradham would likely have been pretty nice fits in McD's scheme, but Rex had no use for them.

In What Round Do the Bills Take Joe Mixon
Chuck Wagon replied to a topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with this. He's going to go a lot higher than casual fans realize. Regardless of where he gets picked the team is going to have to face the media storm, it's not like people will just shrug their shoulders if he goes round 6 but will be outraged if he goes in round 2. He's got round 1 talent, someone will take it at the end of round 2 / beginning of round 3. -
I think Cutler would retire before he would come to Buffalo to backup Tyrod at a cheap salary.

Kolby Listenbee and Dezmin Lewis- where are they???
Chuck Wagon replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would be VERY surprised if we drafted 2 WRs. I'm not convinced we draft one, at least one that's not a late round flier. We are making our 3rd defensive scheme transition in 4 years but not much is changing offensively, I think we go heavily defensive in the draft to load up that side of the ball and Holmes / Butler / Philly / Powell / Listenbee / Lewis are given ample opportunity to win a job. -
Here's how I look at it. The vast majority of the Cleveland Sports fans I know are also Ohio State Buckeyes fans. Sports, but football especially is a big deal in Ohio. I'm a Buckeyes fan. I have a hard time feeling like a traditional long suffering Bills fan when the team I religiously watch on Saturdays is a perennial top 10 team, one coming off a title 2 years ago. By the same token, I have a hard time viewing Cleveland sports fans as being so tortured when I know the vast majority of them are also cheering for a perennial super power on Saturdays.

I live in Ohio. I have to hear all about every move the Browns make, before Red Zone I would be fed garbage Browns-Raiders games over Manning vs Brady, their fans are insufferable and try to make jokes about the Bills, their colors are Brown and Orange. I have my reasons.

Entire AFC East, entire NFC East, the Browns, the Chiefs and the Titans.

But he missed that tackle on Le'Veon Bell that one time, so he can't tackle.

If he's still in Miami and announcing this I have a hard time seeing it as anymore than a leverage deal with the Dolphins. If here is where he wants to be, he wouldn't be there.

I'd have to imagine Cutler is going to pull an Orton and see if a job comes open due to injury and a desperate team. There's certainly a fair amount of smoking gathering that Kaepernick is going to be blackballed out of the league. Say what you want about his politics, the guy is one of the top 64 QBs available. Chase Daniel is also lurking to finally get his shot to replicate Kevin Kolb. Oh and Tony Romo is still a Cowboy. I'm starting to believe Romo is done, or at least only going to play for the Cowboys, he could have his choice of broadcasting job, make millions and never step on the field again.

Somewhere Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick shed a tear as they called their financial adviser to be sure they are well diversified.

I think for McD's defense to truly function well, we need MUCH better linebackers. Keep in mind, the Panthers had 3 1st round pick linebackers on their defense. I do believe if McD was sold on Zach's fit, Zach would have been signed by now.

FA LB Keenan Robinson visited Bills; re-signs with NYG
Chuck Wagon replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Eh, I wouldn't blame him for being a bit bent out of shape. He signed a prove it deal last year, played well and made the pro bowl, and his reward is another prove it deal. No one in FA signed long term deals (I think Hyde's might have been the longest term FA deal in the entire league) and the league simply doesn't value linebackers, but if I were coming off a good performance I'd like to be compensated well too. -
Bills 2017 FA Class or Gilmore/Woods?
Chuck Wagon replied to Adam727's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Keep Gilmore, let Woods walk. We have enough cap space to have kept Gilmore and have our same FA class if we restructure Clay and/or one of Darues / Hughes / Glenn or if we would have put a "Post June 1" designation on Williams or Graham. Only signing I dislike is Ducasse, but I'm not convinced he makes the final roster. I think we signed "good football players" but I'm not sure any of them move the needle outside of Hyde. -
Find me a #2 Reciever after Round 2 In draft
Chuck Wagon replied to Jamie Muellers Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm intrigued by Robert Davis (6'3", ran a 4.44 with a 41 inch vert at the combine), he's a cousin of the Panthers Thomas Davis and went for 8-93-1 vs Wisconsin (Corey Davis had 6-73-1 against them). I thought Josh Malone had stretches where he look pretty interesting at Tennessee, he played against "NFL" DBs in the SEC and is also 6'3" and had the 3rd fastest 40 time (4.40). -

Any way you slice it Kaepernick represents good value
Chuck Wagon replied to stuvian's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
He couldn't? 16 TDs - 4 picks, his efficiency numbers were pretty similar to a few years ago when he was surrounded by MUCH more talent and was the toast of the league, the only really concerning thing was 7 fumbles. He certainly needs to bulk back up, but he wasn't terrible last year, especially considering what was around him. -
[Vague Title]We need to every year
Chuck Wagon replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great, we'll take a QB in the first to third round every year, that way we'll have plenty of guys to play when they get murdered behind a bad oline with no running game and no WRs, but the stats might look good because the nonexistent defense will allow for plenty of garbage time. -

Chuck Wagon replied to stuvian's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
People desperately want Chad Kelly on the team but would quit being a fan if they signed Kaepernick? Priorities. -
He was HC in Detroit and DC in Tennessee, I got my wires crossed, either way he didn't exactly shine in his first HC job.

Andre Holmes claims he isn't signed, Reporters disagree
Chuck Wagon replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Considering the other guy they were looking at was Russell Sheppard, also a teams guy, I'm sure Holmes will be the Easley replacement and could potentially fill a similar role as Justin Hunter did as a big red zone target. The theme of the offseason has been targeting guys who help out in multiple areas. -
I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Hankins, he wants a contract that doesn't match how he performed last year, but he's 24 and has plenty of upside. He could give us very good depth at DT and take over as the long term replacement for Kyle. There's not a lot of opportunity cost to signing him as the market is starting to get picked pretty clean and other than maybe Zach Brown (who also seems to want too much money and would be paying for a career year at 28) there's no one else worth paying.

We are on the same page. Some here can view "comp picks" as a joke, but it's not a coincidence that New England, Baltimore, Green Bay, Pittsburgh etc rarely dabble in FA much and treat draft picks in general, but comp picks too as gold. Filling 5 holes with under the radar FAs every single year is not a model to success, neither is hitting an offseason with almost half the roster spaces unfilled. A franchise should never operate under a "playoffs or bust" mandate, if ownership doesn't trust the front office to build a sustainable winner from the ground up then the front office should already be replaced, not allowed to try to prove itself short term by spiting the long term.
