Barnwell's take is pretty good for the Bills section of this. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/Barnwellx171120/moments-shaped-week-11-2017-nfl-playoff-race-quarterback-changes-injuries-trades-benching-decisions
Pretty damming stuff in the article, especially on the Bills running game and their rushing defense without Dareus.

Which one of those guys fits McDermott's profile?
I have a sinking feeling that the reason he passed on Watson last draft was because he had Peterman in his back pocket, a guy who fits his narrow profile of the type of player he wants on the team.
-
If McDermott is making any decisions based on the reaction of the media, he should be fired now. And making a decision isn't enough in the NFL. Coaches who make good decisions are praised and have long careers. Coaches who make bad decisions get criticized and eventually fired.
McDermott is on run of bad decisions, and he's being justifiably criticized.

Naming him head coach is the only way to bring him back. Unless the Eagles fire him because he gets caught snorting on camera.

Teams just figured it out. Instead of forcing passes into the outside zones, they're taking plays underneath in the center of the field. The Bills pass rush is a basic as it comes. The DEs never stunt, never twist, they just take the outside lane and get pushed past the pocket. There's no middle push by the DTs and few blitzes.
This defense is a bunch of sitting ducks and the coaching staff hasn't reacted to it. They sit back and hope for a turnover. Offenses realize if they protect the ball, they can drive all day long against McDermott's passive schemes.

if you think we should have kept Rex, you deserve everything that happens to you
I think the point is that this current coaching staff is worse than a coaching staff that just about every Bills fan couldn't wait to kick the curb.

And in half of his seasons in Pittsburgh he was around or below.500.
Cowher was 64-32 before he had a losing season. He built up enough capital to make it through a couple of losing seasons. Why don't you use Lewis in Cinci or Fisher in St. Louis/LA to make your point. That's more like the path McDermott is heading. Better yet, use Jauron's four years in Buffalo.

This team definitely needs a QB. The issue is we are NOT 1 player away. The Eagles were close to that. They did need secondary help but other than that, they really only needed a QB. We need way too much to move too many picks for 1 guy. We are not going to be IN it for a while I'm afraid because no matter what we do there are just going to be way too many holes. Defensively we are going to need two DT's another back up DE; another starting CB; almost an entire new LB unit. Offensively, we need almost an entire line; backup HB; TE; QB and another WR. It's insane how much this team needs.
And Philly also has a good defensive coordinator...

You're assuming Pegula has any clue what you're talking about
He's not reading this board?!?!?!?!?!

Here's how Pegula should pick his next GM/HC. Get his pro scouting staff to rate the current players on the team. Take that list into interviews and ask each candidate what is their plan for the top five players on the list. If the candidate says, I'll trade half of them, end the interview. If the candidate says I want to put them into a system that has no connection to their skill and talent, end the interview.
Give the job to the guys who come up with the best plan to develop the guys already on the roster.

No, because Taylor.

the worse thing ever is they might finish 5-11 and have a shot at a top ten pick.
But really does anyone think this organization no matter who it is drafting
is going to draft impact players? I don't.
They had a top 10 pick this past draft and a whole board of QBs to choose from. McDermott decided to punt the QB position to next season for some stupid reason. Maybe he'll trade back in the first round to get that HB/FB hybrid to replace Tolbert.
-
Even is McDermott is able to draft "his guys" on defense, does anyone in Buffalo want to watch a passive cover 2 defense the next three years? Wouldn't you rather watch an attacking, blitzing defense than this bend-but-don't break crap?

Shoudnt have traded for KB.
This regime has no idea what its doing.
Let's take a look at their QB decisions (since that is the most import decision a front office makes)
- In the draft, passed on every QB other than Trubisky, including Deshaun Watson.
- Re-signed Taylor when they could have escaped his contract
- Put Taylor in a west coast offense, the worst scheme match possible
- Decided that a 5th round pick was ready to take over the QB position, on the road, while the team is 5-4
Every one of these decisions look to be wrong. How much confidence does anyone have that they will make the right decision next year?

5 wins too many. We needed to tank.
No, we needed to sign Woods, Watkins and draft Watson. We decided to go the "culture" and "process" route, so now we tank. By the way, the first thing that goes into the sh***er right away during a tank is culture and process.

Takes like this is what caused 17+ years. Ya gotta tear down and build. There's an actual plan. Reading this just shows how idiotic things have gotten w the fans. Today isn't great granted... but what kinda jacka calls for a coach to be fired. Put some ice in ur shorts and chill out
Great, give an unqualified guy 3 years to prove what's obvious to everyone 3 games into the season.
You think the Bills would be better with Ryan's 3 year as coach right now? You think the Bengals are better for giving Lewis 9 years? How bout the Rams giving Fisher all that time to prove himself?
If a guy proves he can't handle the job, fire him and bring in someone who can.
Again, McDermott has done nothing but drain the roster, miss on the best QB on the draft, install the most passive defensive scheme since Jauron's Buffalo days, destroy the running game, and made a horrible in-season QB change decision, which is going to lose him that carefully cultivated locker room he touts.
Fire him now. Bring in a football czar to run the draft and a coaching staff that will implement an attacking defense. The franchise will be better for it in the long run.

I hope McD is humbled by this season and learns from it.
Hubris is often a career killer...
I hope he's fired for it. This guy is a disaster. Drains the roster of talent; passes over the top QB in the draft; implements a passive defensive scheme; destroys the #1 rushing attack in the league; replaces a bad QB with a terrible one.
This guy is a fraud. At least we can enjoy watching cap space and future draft picks the rest of the year.

Yep, totally Peterman's fault. He had a guy with a step on his man down the field but got nailed as he threw. Nothing to do with our horrendous line. And Dimarco not catching an easy dump pass, totally on Peterman. Only the second pick I'd consider on him, and that's 50/50 as he also got hit.
Tyrod at least had Benjamin, Clay and Matthews out there to pass to. Who the hell does Peterman have? And with our LT out, our line is a mess.Well he has a bunch of Chargers. He's doing a great job of getting the ball to them.

It’s easy to not throw licks when you check down, take sacks and throw the ball away.
You realize that throwing picks is the WORST option out of the four things you mention, right?

McDermott: "In the Hunt"
in The Stadium Wall Archives
Posted
The Bills were 8-8 and 7-9 under some pretty horrific coaching by Ryan, yet it was a "miracle" they got to 5 wins this year? It's only a miracle because Beane and McDermott made the roster older and slower in the off season.
If McDermott believes the Bills are in the hunt, and if there is a process, he should have started Taylor against the Chargers, Chiefs, and Patriots. If the Bills lose those games, then give Peterman a chance by starting him at home against the Colts.
That would have been the patient move. That would indicate a process is being followed.
Instead we have the current mess. There is no process. McDermott has no master plan. He's proving himself to be an average coach who is winging it. He's in over his head.
