    Actually missing Tyrod

He just had a 20 yard TD run to tie the game.  Ryan Fitzpatrick is throwing the ball all over the field.

Ghosts of Bills QBs past are making plays, and the Bills are still starting slugs like Peterman.

This idea is that you dump a QB because you want somebody better.  Not this idiotic regression that McBeane is leading us throigh.

....good assessment CB......Nate has improved well beyond what I thought he could do........so why rush Allen?...kid has approached this as the commsumate, respectful, hard working professional.....not one yip or whine about extensive work with the threes..........isn't Darnold the only one from the class starting?..............

The other rookies are playing behind more veteran starters.  The reason you would start Allen is because he's more talented, and in the NFL, talent wins games.

This was the case in Houston.  Savage puttered along and looked competent in the preseason, and O'Brien wanted to slow-play Watson, for all the cliched reasons.   It took one half of football to prove O'Brien wrong.  In fact, he was probably lucky that Savage was so stunningly bad, because if he was just mediocre, O'Brien probably would have played him 5 or 6 more games.  Watson's strong play probably saved O'Brien's job.

  3. The Bills spent a bunch of high draft picks to select Allen, but they basically buried him during the preseason in favor of playing the QB who played the worst half of football in modern NFL history.

If the Dolphins or Patriots did something like this, I doubt that this board would respond positively to the move.

McDermott's rep is on the line here.  If Nate coughs up 2 or 3 interceptions in this game and the Bills lose, McDermott's going to look like the most stubborn HC in the league or the most clueless.

As someone had posted earlier, Peterman has posted top 10 stats in every category this preseason including a good start against Carolina and stepping in when Allen was forced out.  Also has a much faster release than Allen and thats why there were less sacks when he was in.  You absolutely need that faster release with this OL.

Until they fix the OL, Allen should watch, learn and work on his anticipation and release.

At this point, with that OL, Peterman gives us the best chance to win now.

The only way that Allen can work on his anticipation and release is by practicing and  playing with the starters.

Soon as the season starts, Allen's learning time greatly decreases.  There is very little focus on learning and fundamentals during the season.  The entire team will be focused on preparing for the next opponent.

The best way for Allen to learn is to play.

Bad protection teaches QB's bad habits because they don't have enough space or time to use proper mechanics IMO.

Its a recipe for failure in the development of a QB...

Guys like Jim Kelly, John Elway, and Peyton Manning  all played as rookies behind poor offensive lines.  They turned out okay.

The nature of the draft places the better QB prospects on bad teams.  If the prospect is a franchise caliber QB, they elevate the play of the bad team in some way.

If the prospect is not truly an elite NFL QB, they fall to the level of the bad players on the team.

The sooner a coaching staff knows whether they have a QB that elevates the team, the better.

Hiding Allen accomplishes nothing if he is a franchise QB.

  6. One of the issues Allen had yesterday was the speed of and familiarity of playing with the ones.  He probably would have done better if he wasn't spending most of his time the last 3 months with the 3rd stringers.

The only way he gets better in this regard is by playing with the first team (same goes with Peterman).

McDermott has decide who he is developing Peterman or Allen, because that guy needs the majority of snaps from here on out.

My choice is to give the ball to the 7th pick in the draft.  Hiding him is only hurting his development.

  7. There's no calvary coming to help the Oline.  Time to improve the line was months ago; that time has passed.  There's no talented Olineman being put on the block like Mack.

The players have to improve, and the coaches have to adjust the scheme to make up for lack of talent.

And if Mack is available, grab him up, because the Dline looks as bad as the Oline.

Because there's a sucker born every minute.

The thing is that the Browns have been favored by the "Sharps" (professional bettors) for the last two seasons.  It's not just the suckers backing them.

Maybe it's their collection of high draft picks or the large point spreads in the game, or that they'll give the Steelers a tough game every other season, but betting on the Browns defies explanation.

This season looks like their coaching staff is dysfunctional and they'll have an idiotic QB controversy. I bet them under 5 and 1/2 games in Vegas, and would have taken the under if the line was  4 and 1/2.

  9. The Ravens, Vikings, and Seahawks all place value on winning preseason games.  Their coaches will actually try to win a game, as opposed to coaches who are more interested in getting as many players on film.  You can also add the Pats and, yes, the Browns to that group.

Knowing this actually makes preseason games a pretty good bet.

Aaron Rogers sat for 2 years.......(of course, that was behind Farve)  Still, a season watching and learning would help him a lot...in fact he would learn a lot with just a half a season sitting.  That, in fact, is my prediction.....we will see Allen Nov 25 against the Jags, not before.  HE will finish the season, then, if healthy.  6 game training program when the season is (essentially) over.

I don't know, this idea of "watching and learning" just seems bogus to me.

Coaches claim it's beneficial, but it really seems like a cover-up because they still want to start a veteran (like Farve), or the rookie QB they drafted highly is a potential bust (like EJ), or they don't have the guts to trust the guy they highly drafted or they don't know how to coach a young QB (Jeff Fisher).

Seriously, what is Allen going to learn "watching" a football game?  On any given Sunday, 60,000 people watch a live football game.  Are they better QBs for watching a live game?

Young, talented players need reps to learn.  They need to work on the field with the team's best players.  During the season, the starting QB gets all the reps in practice.  The backup QB is the QB for the scout team.  And a 3rd string guy is throwing the ball to the WRs in sweats coming off of IR.

At what other position is "watching and learning" acceptable for a highly drafted rookie?  The Bills are starting a 20 year old rookie at MLB this year.  If the coaches said, we're going to let him "watch and learn" this year, fans would rightly have this guy pegged as a bust.

In the salary cap era, team's need their first and second round players to contribute to win.  The Chiefs sat their first round QB to let him "watch and learn," but you have to wonder if their team could have gone further in the playoffs with an additional first round talent on the o-line, or in the secondary, or at linebacker.

And after a year of "watching and learning" how surprised will you be if Mahomes still looks like a rookie this year?  Not very is my guess.

I firmly believe that McDermott will start the QB that gives the team the best chance to win this year.  But if it's not Allen, you have to wonder how much better the team would have been with 2 extra 2nd rounders on the roster.  That's the price for Allen's supposed education.

I just think people’s expectations for Allen are kinda insane right now. I’ve seen Brett Farve, John Elway, and Newton comparisons.  This guy is taking one of the biggest leaps a top pick can take.

This is guy needs to sit right away and not get his confidence crushed with this subpar looking group.

The Bills invested high draft picks to move to 12 and then 7, and passsed on Mahomes and Watson last season to draft Allen.  I think Bills fans expectations are dead on.

And the front office needs to know ASAP whether they're dealing with the next Favre or Jake Locker.

Jim Kelly came to the Bills already 'battle hardened' by the USFL.

Bills fans are still spoiled by that unique situation.

Give the new kid a chance, and some time.

I am of the belief that he will pay us all back, immeasurably.

The Bills finished 4-12 Kelly's first season. The team was young, but Smith, Reed, and Talley were on the roster.  Despite many mistakes, like a bunch of late game interceptions, there was no doubt Kelly was the guy.

I kind of expect the same from Allen.

The states will bed the leagues quickly because revenue will be yuge for both, bigly even.

It will create another case of hypocrisy for the league and the government

Nevada shuts the pro leagues out.  The other states need to do the same.

And the revenues won't be huge if the lines are negatively impacted by the vigs that bookies have to pay the state and the league's.

Bettors who enjoy the liberalized betting laws will shop for the best lines and will take their business off-shore.

The pro leagues need to check their greed and play the long game.

I'm interested to see how many RPO's they run and the complexity of them. He's accurate over the middle when he's in rhythm. Freeze the LB's and let him hit those quick slants. If the slant isn't open, chuck it to one of the outside receivers running a go.

One thing I'm curious about is his ability/willingness to check down. In college you don't see him do it very often. With Shady, check downs can lead to big plays and I think that's a weapon that could help him a lot. I think they should start with a bunch of plays that are 2-3 reads top and then check down. They need to get him to speed up with progressions a little bit and learn to utilize Shady in the pass game when he isn't the primary target.

They tried to do this type of thing with Taylor, and it was a bust.  Taylor  isn't a rhythm passer and neither is Allen.

Allen is a pure passer for whom the red zone starts at the opponent's 40 yard line.  If they accept that Allen can stretch a defense, and move the 8th guy out of the box, Allen can be a 57% passer and still run a successful offense.

If Daboll has a plan, it better not be turning Allen into a WCO QB, or ruining his mechanics in the name of footwork.  Allen is way more Kelly than Brady, and any successful plan should embrace that.
