To understand Mullens you have to know the backstory at Southern Miss. I live near Hattiesburg and my daughter is a student there so I follow them a lot. They have traditionally been a mid-major power in Conference USA. Larry Fedora was the coach from 08-11 and had some really good seasons but was always looking for a better job. The rumor was his last year in 2011, he had already made a deal with UNC to become their head coach so he was actually recruiting players for UNC while at Southern Miss. When he left Southern Miss the cupboard was obviously bare and they went from 11-2 in 2011 to 0-12 and 1-11 in 2012-13. Mullens was a freshman in 2013 and the team was terrible but there was some NFL talent there. It was easy to see that he had real potential to be a good NFL QB but he was buried on horrible teams. They rebounded and had 9-5 and 7-6 seasons his junior and senior years. If Fedora had not done what he did to Southern Miss, Mullens would have been a much higher profile player even though in his 44 games there he threw for 12,000 yards and 87 TD's.

DeFilippo has 8 games of experience as an OC. Before that never higher than QB coach. It might work but McDermott has a much more extensive resume and I think we need to give the rebuild time.

I agree. From his interviews when he first signed it sounded like the mentoring aspect appealed to him.

We are still right where we were after the draft. Allen was the least ready to play but has the most upside.

I agree with you that they are on offense. We have 10 draft picks and a ton of cap money next year. You can’t tell me that 2-3 solid O lineman and 2 playmakers at WR would make us a good offense. Zay can be a solid possession receiver with outside threats. That’s only adding 4-5 players.

I believe that they have decided to follow the Astros model of rebuilding, which is a total tear down from top to bottom. They are getting the pieces in place while suffering big losses to build a consistent winner for the future. Consistently putting a band aid on the problems by handing out bad contracts to remain 8-8 or 7-9 isn’t going to build a winner. Building through the draft and when you’re ready to win, adding the needed veterans is the proper way to rebuild. The Astros had Altuve, Springer and drafted Correa and Bregman. When they were ready, they got Verlander. They lost over 100 games for several years in a row but set themselves up for long term success. I believe that’s the model they are following. We have excellent pieces on defense and hopefully our QB.

I’m not accepting it. Not one of us here can change the route that they decided to take. My belief is that they decided to take the Houston Astros model of rebuilding. A total tear down instead of band aid fixes to remain 8-8 or 7-9 each year.

These are the times that make being a fan so much better when they actually do turn the corner and become a contender. Either get on board or leave. Either way, quick whining about everything.
