  1. Due to national security concerns, I can neither confirm nor deny. But probably.
  2. I've ripped Orton pretty regularly this year, but his departure warrants a retrospective of his time in Buffalo. So here it is. Enjoy, and Happy New Year to everyone at Two Bills Drive, Dave Staba
  3. That veteran-presence bit would make more sense if Orton hadn't played terribly the last two weeks. Watkins is the only rookie among the skill guys, and the line has played just as badly in front of Orton as it did with E.J. As for the 'painfully obvious' part, Manuel had two terrible games and two OK ones this season. Orton has had two terrible games, one more bad than good (New England), two that would be remembered as OK at best except for one late drive in each (Detroit and Minnesota), and a walkover against the Jets. The Bills are .500 under each quarterback. No doubt, Orton was better in his first four starts than Manuel in his. But he needed to be a lot better for longer to justify permanently scrapping a first-round pick. The comment below is basically what I'm saying.
  4. Orton completed short passes on third and long twice in the fourth quarter against Miami, and it would have been three except he missed Brown on 3rd and 11. I guess we disagree on the value of continuing to play Orton. Unless you think he gives you a real shot at beating Denver, Green Bay or New England -- and Buffalo needs to win two of those games, and sweep the Jets, Browns and Raiders to get to 10 wins -- I don't see it. I don't have a great deal of faith in Manuel, either, but as I said, there's a much better chance of him getting significantly better than of Orton doing anything other than what he's always done. Pretty sure I didn't say anything like that.
  5. If you're satisfied with a touchdown every couple of weeks, then I guess Orton's the guy.
  6. I'm looking at it on the whole -- I thought that goal-line pick-six wiped out any good he accomplished. And I'm probably lumping in his Thursday-night disaster against Cleveland. Poor guy looked terrified. Either way, he disqualified himself from future consideration IMO. I don't think Manuel has.
  7. Mutiny? No evidence of that, other than a little griping from receivers, but if you think so. Think Orton's repeated failures (21 drives without a touchdown) might have something to do with the late defensive let-downs the last two weeks? Or in the second half against New England (a game for which Orton did not gotten nearly enough heat for the killer turnovers in the first half)?
  8. No, I'm just bad at the internet. Except that Jeff Tuel has started one NFL game, in which he was indisputably terrible, has not been involved in three game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, and was not selected with a first-round pick, you're right. Tuel and Manuel are exactly the same. You can do better.
  9. Hopefully, the idea that "Orton is good enough to win with" has been thoroughly disproven, for the reasons included in the link below. Arguments to the contrary are welcome. http://wewantmarangi.blogspot.com/2014/11/reality-requires-manuels-return.html

  12. On Nov. 17, 1974, rookie backup quarterback Gary Marangi came off the bench to replace Joe Ferguson in Miami, and threw his first passes for the Bills. Two of them went for touchdowns, including a 5-yard touchdown to Bobby Chandler to tie the game at 28 with less than a minute left. Since this was the 1970s, Don Nottingham scored on a 23-yard run 37 seconds later to give the Dolphins a 35-28 win, their 10th straight over the Bills on the way to 20 in a row. If you're looking to kill a little time waiting for kickoff, here are a couple things I wrote this week: On memories better left suppressed: http://wewantmarangi.blogspot.com/2014/11/orton-fitz-marrone-chan-whats-difference.html And a piece that ran in this week's Artvoice. Sort of light on Bills-Dolphins preview stuff, because the print edition came out today, and will be on the street for another six days after the game. http://wewantmarangi.blogspot.com/2014/11/kc-loss-puts-bills-in-vice_13.html or http://artvoice.com/issues/v13n46/bills_upon_further_review Enjoy the game ... As for tonight, it looks like a good matchup for Buffalo, what with how poorly Ryan Tannehill has handled a pass rush that has been more dominant than ever the last couple of games. This being the Bills, however, keeping your optimism cautious is recommended.
  13. Yes. Yes, I am. Exactly. Like I said, history doesn't matter. Except when it does.
