Beane's biggest blunder?
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to Sammy Watkins' Rib's topic in The Stadium Wall
When Peterman essentially fooled Beane and McDermott twice into them thinking he was not only worthy of a roster spot but worthy of starting an NFL game, only to be benched by half time in each of those two starts, I seriously thought these two clowns have no idea how to evaluate a QB. It had me initially having very little hope for JA to start his rookie seasons. But he had fully won me over by the time we played that game down in Miami his rookie year. -

You have a point there. However, HappyDays who originally brought up the topic of Toney, I have to assume was referencing him as a receiver when he also mentioned AJ Brown and OBJ helping the Eagles and Rams respectively. I have to assume he was not considering special teams ability since neither AJ Brown or OBJ bring any at this point in their careers . Strictly as a receiver, Toney didn't move the needle much. The Saints had three consecutive 7-9 seasons with Brees and Payton. That was sort of in the middle of the Payton and Brees era. Really shouldn't have happened since Brees was in his prime during that streak of 7-9 seasons. However, I think you are still somewhat correct because the later era Saints, did put up some winning seasons despite being in cap space hell for a lot of those years. -

Are you talking about the TD? Didn't Sky Moore make the exact same catch on the same route for a TD on the next series? I think that is proof that the Chiefs could have put any receiver out there and gotten the exact same result. -
In your opinion, what is Beane's biggest blunder either draft, free agency or trade? Something that has prevented the Bills from winning it all or putting them in what looks like a downward trajectory in terms of post season finishes since the AFC Championship game appearance in 2020? For me it is using three day two picks on RB over four consecutive drafts from 2019 to 2022. I think Singletary was a solid pick. Other than a case of the fumbles more than you would like he really produced AND he could do it all. A three down back. But using day two picks in 2020 and 2022 meant the Bills neglected the o-line. This past draft should have been the draft to use another day two pick on a RB, after Singletary's rookie contract expired.

Ross Tucker ranks NFL Coach’s, places McDermott at #22.

We can talk about it now since Hamlin has fully recovered. I agree it didn't help but not in the way that you probably think. I think the Bills would have fared better on the road in the divisional at Cincinatti rather than hosting the Bengals. And had the game played out I think it likely would have been close but also leaned towards a Bills loss. I think they would have at least played a close game in Cincinatti in the playoffs rather than what we saw in Buffalo. -

I don't blame McDermott at all for 2020. I think that would be incredibly unfair to him. The 2020 team came out of nowhere. The took a massive step up. In many years they would have been the #1 seed and clear best team in the conference. It was just unfortunate timing with history that they happened to breakout in the middle of a Chiefs dynasty. I submit a little more blame on McDermott for 2022 though than you do. The Bills were hit with injuries on the defensive side of the Ball. But they did not lose at home to the Bengals 28-31. They only managed 10 points on the scoreboard. I'm still not sure which unit was worse, the offense or the defense. I know McD is a defensive coach but he's also the head coach so it all falls on him ultimately. -

Shanny is the younger, fit version of Andy Reid. That guy appears to be a legit offensive genius like Reid. He gets the absolute most out of every QB just like Reid has always done since his early days in Philly. I'd probably have Reid and Shanny as #1 and #2 respectively. I'd be tempted to put Jon Harbough #3. Tomlin is #4 or #5. Would have Belicheck in the top 5 as well I guess. I'm just not sure I like this current Belicheck enough to put him in the top 3 though. For me Payton is a guy I want to see fail in Denver. I think he is massively overrated. He was in N.O. for a longtime so of course he had some great years where they won 13 games and even a Super Bowl. But how in the heck do you put up four 7-9 seasons with possibly a top 10 QB of all-time in Brees? A 7-9 season with Josh Allen seems literally impossible. Like you would have to throw a game to only win 7 games with Josh Allen as the QB. To do that four times? That is not good. Unfortunately for McDermott, while he is solidly top 15, he has enough warts on a now long resume where one year wonder coaches like Daboll are leap frogging him. Doesn't seem fair on the surface but I understand the logic of giving a new head coach the benefit of the doubt when projecting them out. -

22 is ridiculously low. But he may be out of the top 10 until he can find more postseason success. Think he has a 4-5 postseason record to date. Trending backwards in the postseason since the 2020 AFC Championship game appearance. Blew a 16-0 half time lead against the Texans. Failed to win a game with a lead and 13 seconds left. But you can't rank him in the bottom third of coaches when he broke the Bills playoff drought with a regressing Tyrod Taylor and Nathan Peterman. And when he has two 13 win seasons in two of the last three seasons. -

They're likely the best team in their division. -
Honorable Mention to the 2018 @ Miami game that the Bills loss. Allen was running all over the field that day and making big time throws to JAG receivers. That was the first game I watched Allen and thought this dude has all the tools to be an elite QB AND will likely put them together eventually.

16 yard line!?! I think you are off by about 30 yards. We only needed a FG to win. From what I recall it would have been about 60 or 62 yard attempt had McKenzie caught the ball and headed straight for the sideline rather than turning up field. Excellent post. Those Colts and Jags games in 2021 as well as the 3 point first half against the Dolphins on Halloween are for some reason forgotten. I know the offense went scorched earth in the playoffs but they had their hiccups just like the regular season. And the Bills should have put up 40+ against the Dolphins in the WC this year but turnovers and drops killed them. Things out of Dorsey’s control.
-
i don't recall all the specifics from the game, but again, they should have had another TD with a perfect play call from Dorsey. For the struggles as a whole it was likely due to the Bills offense working hard to move the ball between the 20's that by the time they got into the redzone, in that heat, they had nothing left. My opinion has been that Dorsey gets too much blame. The players deserve a big share. The Bills saw a dramatic uptick in turnovers this year, especially fumbles, 13 this past year whereas we only had 6 in 2021. Turnovers are on the players, especially fumbles. The very next week, the Baltimore game was a good example. I think the Bills had three first half turnovers. Baltimore turns two of them into TD's and the Bills are in a 17-0 hole. Second half comes, players stop turning the ball over and the offense all of a sudden looks good. The Miami playoff game was another good example. The offense was lighting it up. Very easily would have scored over 40 points if it wasn't for the turnovers and Knox drop in the end zone. But the take-a-away from that game is that the Bills offense struggled because they had three turnovers on the day and it was a 3- point margin at the end. But that really doesn't paint an accurate picture of the game that Dorsey called.
-
With about 2 minutes left Allen threw a ball in the dirt with a receiver wide open for the go ahead TD. Perfect play design. IIRC, the offense put up over 500 yards in extreme heat and the Bills were greatly undermanned all over the roster.

I don't see the parameter as being set at a random number though. It's specifically set at year #5 because that is the year that McDermott and Allen just completed together. We could set it at years 6, 7, and 8 etc. moving forward and it would still be true in that head coach and QB combinations have not won super bowls beyond year 5. The reason this is the case is that too few head coaches have had the opportunity to still coach their QB's in seasons beyond year #5. Even more don't even make it to a year 3 or 4. This of course is all do to elevated expectations and impatience.
-
The numbers are not manipulated. It simply tells us what we already know. Billionaire owners get impatient. We have little reason to believe Terry will be different. Reid lasted a long time in Philly before finally being fired. There is a chance McDermott could do the same even if he never gets us over the hump. I'm sure if billionaire owners were more patient overall we would have a handful of head coach / QB combos that have won beyond their 5th year. But patience hasn't been the case often enough.
-
There is a very real chance this could be McDermott's final year. If the Bills go backwards for the third consecutive year from AFC Championship game appearance, to close divisional road game loss in OT, to blown out in divisional home game to, losing WC game or worse, that is often a recipe for coaching changes. Even Super Bowl winning coaches commonly get fired after multiple tailing off seasons.

Josh Allen's a real puzzle
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to Ed_Formerly_of_Roch's topic in The Stadium Wall
Definitely not NFLPA endorsed. -
Of all the times of the year I would actually be perfectly fine with Allen accounting for over 40% of our rushing yards it would be the playoffs. What we need is for him to run far less in the regular season. And then let them loose and catch teams by surprise in the playoffs. it would be nice if his rushing attempts in the regular season were cut in half.

Players that ARE HOF inductees but should NOT be
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
agree. Both really shouldn’t eventually be in the Hall of Fame but I expect both to be in for different reasons. if Jerome Bettis is in the HOF, then, Frank Gore, sure as heck should be.
