To hell with trading him when you can just cut him.

I totally agree with this regarding our coaching staffs ability to develop a young QB. With that said, Allen actually might be the perfect fit for a staff that is sub par in the QB developing. Allen is always going to resort to doing what he does best anyway which is play hero ball. That goes beyond anything a coach can teach or design up for a player.

Our 2015 53 man roster was probably the most talented we've had since the drought began. Or at least up there with the Drew Bledsoe lead team the one year Bledsoe was actually good. We just had a terrible coach that took a top defense and had them play a bad scheme among other things. Beane still has work to do. And ultimately it likely all falls on whether or not Allen succeeds. That's pretty much how it goes for all GM's that hold a job without a proven franchise QB. It's all about getting that QB. Just like for Whaley it was ultimately going to come down to getting out of "QB purgatory" which ultimately we were not able to do. Ugh! We cut Duke Williams!? Seriously? I knew about McCoy and figured it was likely him or Gore would be cut. But this is the first time I am reading Duke has been cut.
-
But I would argue that Whaley's teams were more talented than any Beane has put together to date. So if we are taking the position that it is not the GM's job to win games but instead put good football players on the roster than I would say Beane still has some work to do. Whaley certainly had a terrible head coach that did not get the most out of the players on the roster. I'm good with Beane so far. But i realize not everything he touches turns to gold either. Can't hit on them all. KB was a huge flop. And let's knock on wood Morse is not another.

Bandit's Projected 53

Maybe having to tackle on the punt team is the concern? Most centers wouldn't be the best to track one of the fastest players on the field down. Also, don't want your center getting injured. -
Bojo needs to go !!

Yeah, I never really understood why we moved on from Schmidt. -
Even guys like Rivers, Big Ben and Eli are putting together some long careers though. Not just the unicorns in Brady and Brees.

The sad thing is he plays in an era where the QB is protected more than ever. Because of it guys are consistently playing deep into their 30's and even 40's. I think with Luck it's been a combination of a bit of a reckless style of play and just being injury prone. It's too bad he didn't get to sit behind Peyton for a couple seasons like Rodgers got to sit behind Favre. Peyton probably could have taught him a lot about staying on the field and protecting his body.

Should we Trade Zay Jones?
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not the best. But some of the blame still should go to Zay. Foster had a significantly higher catch rate, YPC and YPT than Zay last year playing with most of the same QB’s. -

I would not want to straight up cut Zay. He has value for our team. That said, I think Duke Williams should at least have the opportunity to play snaps ahead of or at least equal to Zay to see what Duke can bring to the offense. That will mean cutting Foster which may or may not happen. Or Roberts which could be a surprise move. While his numbers overall look all right for a number two WR, Zay last year was targeted more like a high level two or low level #1. For all receivers with 100 or more targets last year Zay wad near dead last in catch rate, YPC and YPT. -
Mayfield looked terrible last night...

Never said he was great. Simply pointing out that history shows you can be great and still have a tendency to try make hero throws across your body. Brett Favre did that a number of times right up to his final days with the Vikings. As long as he is making more positive plays than negative plays and helping the team win consistently he will stick around as our franchise guy. Also pointing out that I don't think fans should simply expect him to suddenly stop making these throws. I fully expect to see him make them throughout his career.. As was mentioned earlier, they can turn into huge gains like the Ivoy and McCoy plays from last year. -
JOSH ALLEN post game thread

Or a 40 year old future HOFer. I pretty much agree. For those that don't like the throw, you are just going to have to learn to deal with it. I fully expect to see it every season from Allen throughout his career. It's just how he plays. I'm fine with it. Take the good with the bad when it comes with Allen. As long as he producing far more good than bad he will stick around and have a nice career. -

Meh. He is a hero ball player and that is what makes him so great. Got to take the good with the bad. You know who else was supposed to learn to not do that? HOFer Brett Favre. Heck he was still doing it at 40 years old with the Vikings. -
Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season game 3
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Allen will always be at his best playing hero ball. We are just going to have to learn deal with it when it blows up in our faces every now and then. It's hard to imagine Foster not making the team after the way he finished the season last year but who knows. It is obvious that Duke Williams should make the team now. And McKenzie should as well. Assuming Roberts is definitely a lock I don't see how we can keep 7 WR's and one of Foster or Zay has to be on the chopping block. Would think either could net a 5th round pick or so. -
Receiver competition with two games left
Sammy Watkins' Rib replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It’s not just about drops. It’s about the fact that when Allen targets Zay a negative play is the result far too much. Search receivers on Pro Football Reference with 100+ targets and sort by catch percentage. He comes up ranked 25th out of 28 WR’s and has a much lower YPC and YPT average than 90% of the receivers on the list. At the very least he needs to be targeted far less than he was last year unless him and Allen start to connect on the same page more often. And of course we saw the same problems when Tyrod was QB too. And last year Foster managed to have a much higher ypc and catch percentage than Zay. The common denominator in Zay’s lack of production seems to be Zay himself thus far. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=single&year_min=2018&year_max=2018&season_start=1&season_end=-1&pos[]=wr&draft_year_min=1936&draft_year_max=2019&draft_slot_min=1&draft_slot_max=500&draft_pick_in_round=pick_overall&conference=any&draft_pos[]=qb&draft_pos[]=rb&draft_pos[]=wr&draft_pos[]=te&draft_pos[]=e&draft_pos[]=t&draft_pos[]=g&draft_pos[]=c&draft_pos[]=ol&draft_pos[]=dt&draft_pos[]=de&draft_pos[]=dl&draft_pos[]=ilb&draft_pos[]=olb&draft_pos[]=lb&draft_pos[]=cb&draft_pos[]=s&draft_pos[]=db&draft_pos[]=k&draft_pos[]=p&c1stat=targets&c1comp=gt&c1val=100&c2stat=pass_sacked&c2comp=gt&c5val=1.0&order_by=catch_pct -

Does he have an injury or veteran rest day? I'm just curious about Brown. Not having access to the practices, I haven't really seen him contribute and don't know what kind of connection him and Allen will have. -

But did he dominate in TD receptions? Who's to say Brown, Beasely, any of the three young WR's we could keep or the new TE wouldn't put in 7 or 8 TD's if they were targeted as much as Zay? And Zay had a very low catch rate when thrown too. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem like things work out well when we target Zay a ton. I mean look at Beasely the other night. The guy hasn't even been here for one full camp and he catches everything Allen throws at him. It feels like both Zay and the Bills need a mutual divorce at this point. -

Fair point. But Foster has at least played at a high level in the league for a six or seven game stretch. I'm not sure Zay has even put together a solid 4 game stretch. And he has had two full years to try to put together a good stretch of games. Plus, Foster's seems to really only have one other player on the roster that does what he does, John Brown. Brown goes down with an injury then we have nobody. Zay does similar things as Beasley, McKenzie and McCloud. He has more competition. -

I'm completely over Zay at this point. Don't care who it is, but someone should be over him. I'm thinking Zay has to have trade value still though. -

Yeldon is toast. I sure hope they keep Wade on the 53. I think there is a reasonably good chance (50/50) Gore is cut or McCoy is traded or possibly cut. Where exactly has John Brown been? I believe he has two targets and 1 catch in two pre-season games with a goose egg in the last game. I'm sure his spot is safe, but he has seen very little action. I didn't think it was possible at first but I just don't see the value in keeping Zay Jones. He's being consistently outplayed or at least matched by guys drafted much lower than him. If he were not a high draft pick it wouldn't even be a debate about whether he would be cut or not. Maybe they try work a trade for him as it is likely another team could see value in him still and think they can get more out of him. Maybe Washington or the New York Giants? Send Washington Zay and a 2nd rounder for Trent Williams?
