NFL logically does not want to set a precedent which would allow players to collect contacts for quitting for any reason for there already are too many players which have done that. Barry Sanders played chicken-and-egg game with Lions not paying back signing bonus saying he might come out of retirement (which he never did) and each year paying back portion of signing bonus while earning money on money not paid back. NFL could create an exception allowing Tua to keep guarantee but it will not count against cap and that would set ANOTHER precedent. NFLPA could offer to help Tua out post paying back money retiring on his own but NFLPA would hate doing that since they only want to get money (Is NFLPA a non-profit like NFL?). There is no good solution and problems will get worse as players QBs especially get higher and higher salaries with more and more (or all 😝) contracts.
