I have not looked at Kyle Allen's college experience. This may be a case of a player needing to retrain muscle memory.

Elam is a man-to-man corner in a zone defense which is a lot more complicated. He never played man-to-man in college. Tackling / run defense however is part of a CBs job. Hopefully the Bills have some VR program he can use to get him up to speed faster. It also is possible that the Bills will mix man-to-man with zone defense now Coach McD is defense coordinator; he used that defense for Panthers and with Jim Johnson for Eagles.

NFL teams can also protect practice squad players. Four players can be protected each week, so they can’t be signed by another team off their practice squad. I can see this being an issue with a player if another team wants and needs player on practice squad and team keeps protecting him every week to keep player out of other teams roster.

In particular Hyde's injury is the type you either are cleared for and can play unrestricted or one which you need to retire. He was cleared to play and doctors who do job properly would not clear him if the injury would make him playing football unsafe.
