Who knows if Orton is good enough to win 8-9 by himself but I know that he wont be the reason we lose them Orton s 21-12 with the bears with a strong defense and running game first year in Denver he went 9-7 and second year 3-10 getting hurt but never having the defense or running game he had in chicago When he was waived by Denver he was picked up off waivers by the Chiefs in a situation similar to this one and immediately went 2-1 and getting the chiefs a missed fg away from the playoffs The Chiefs picked up Orton off waivers because cassell was hurt and they had a guy named Palko starting who couldnt throw it in the ocean despite having weapons ,a winning game and a good defense . Orton and the Chiefs were the team that gave the undefeated Packers their lone loss in the regular season . Who wouldve thought you can pick a guy up off waivers and he can have a immediate impact on your team ? In the NFL its not always about needing flash its about needing competency at the position. and now that we see what is hurting us it would be foolish to waste a season of solid defense and running games based off fears of the what may happen down the line . We have not been to the playoffs in 14 seasons and your argument about doing something that could possibly get us there is that we might lose ?

Why is the rest of the offense getting a pass?
JC2002 replied to Hazed and Amuzed's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
An offense has only as much swagger as its QB . The issue is that the running backs can only do so much the QB is the leader of the offense and when you are trying to develop young receivers ball placement and reliability are important . I just don't think EJ is ready he does not suck but the team needs things from him that hes simply not able to give them right now -
It wasn't a playoff game it was a play in game thats my bad His passer rating is not lower than Fitz I can say that he is a nfl caliber PASSER and call it a fact because I would call anyone with back to back 3500+ seasons in the NFL as being a NFL caliber passer. The fact that you think he is backup has no bearing whatsoever on his ability to throw the ball which is what is in question . the fact that people try and argue this stuff is hilarious And if we cut him today how many teams would call this guy who is not NFL caliber anything ? When people wont even admit obvious facts it hard to even take it seriously
-
this is based on what ? Orton just played a playoff game in Dallas after sitting the entire season and was 3-46 for 358 2 td 2 picks and and had a 7.78 ypa but if he comes here he wont be able to complete a pass and his ypa will drop to 3.2 . Orton is not about to morph into Rodgers but the claims that he would play the same as EJ are ridiculous.
-
Orton does not suck and neither does EJ . Ej is simply not ready but Orton is a NFL caliber passer thats a FACT . I cant believe people would argue they are the same and I dont think you would find a football expert in this world that believes that EJ and Orton are the same caliber passer .
-
EJ still has plenty of room to improve and I haven't given up on him . What some seem to overlook in this situation is that while EJ took what the defense gave him the defense didn't give him things they thought he was capable of winning the game with. They don't believe that if they take away the run he can complete 7-8 throws every drive and get this team into the endzone .
-
It wouldn't have made a difference because if you are behind which we were and the majority of the Qbs completions are to the running backs well then that is playing into the defenses hands . At a certain point you have to be able to consistently push the ball downfield especially with the attention our running game has been getting . Most teams with will gladly take EJ dinking and dunking for 80 yards because the odds are in their favor that he cant do that 3-4 times games and the drives will stall which is exactly what we saw . EJ completions rate in the redzone is 33% . It does not take long for the defensive coordinators in the NFL to see what you can and cant do . EJ has only attempted one pass over 40 yards and while he doesn't have to air it out every play he should be taking a few more shots but because hes not airing it out its imperative that he take advantages of the opportunity when guys are open because without big play capability his margin of error is actually smaller
-
Orton is miles ahead of EJ as a passer MILES ahead . Orton is not as mobile as EJ heck not even close but the guy can throw a ball and doesn't throw a lot of picks . Brandon marshall set league record in catches in a game with orton throwing to him and while marshall is a beast for any QB . Brandon Lloyd came behind him the following year and orton helped put him in the pro bowl when he was nearly out of the league . I have not given up on EJ but hes missing throws the team flat out needs him to make and so hes needs to start making them . Orton has already proven he can make those throws .
-
The defense gave us 5 possessions in the 4th quarter alone in a 2 score game at home . they held the Chargers to 20 points The time of possession Chargers 31:34 Bills 28:26 The Chargers were able to pick up some big chunk plays but ultimately had 336 total yards The defense was more than enough.
-
How good are they that they can not show up and still hold a NFL team to 20 points ? The Chargers 13 points at halftime this game was winnable the offense generated nothing in the first half and we are probably near the bottom of the league in passing now and the NFL is now a passing league .
-
Orton is a passer PERIOD and much better at right now then EJ is . He can make that back shoulder and seam throws and make the pocket throw between the safety and the Corner down the sideline . If we were to insert Orton we would immediately become a playaction big play stretch the field type of offense . With that being said you have to stay with EJ now but that 2-1 can quickly become 3-2 on the road the next two weeks. Just like with any other position plays are on the field to be made and if EJ cant make them consistently enough you cant just give away games . Now he gets a chance to grow in the next two games as these teams will use the same strategy as the Chargers.
-
They did play like. The defense held the Chargers to 20 points its a home game and they played us for the run nearly the entire game . What does that leave ? It means the QB has go to make some throws and while I voted to keep EJ in he has got to start making those throws . If you cant make those throws you wont be in the NFL long . The Texans and the Lions will do the same thing the Chargers did until EJ makes them think twice
-
It was 13-3 at the half They moved the ball well but they certainly didn't score at will . The fact is that they knew that once they got up a couple of scores that a qb of EJ's ability would not be able to bring us back without the help of turnovers or special teams
-
Rivers sat behind Drew Brees for two seasons he was not costing the Chargers games all in the name or growing pains
-
so now EJ is on the same level as a league MVP.
-
The Oline was fine the Chargers game plan was to run blitz and take away that security blanket and considering the run game is what was carrying the offense we see the results . Until we can throw the ball with authority teams are gonna try and take away the running game and dare EJ to be able to put together long mistake free drives over the course of a game.
-
The reality of the situation is that an insane ground game , some turnovers, and a special teams play helped just as much as EJ did . If he needs all that EVERY SINGLE GAME for us to win we are going to be in trouble. Thats reality but I dont think he should he replaced now but people need to stop with the excuse making those two wins will seem like a decade if we dont take care of business against JJ WYatt and Suh the next two weeks
-
if the defense is holding teams to 22 points or less the defense is not a excuse with the weapons we have . In 3 games opponents have been held to 22 ,10,23 those are winnable numbers in the NFL. The argument that for us to win the defense should have held the Chargers to under 10 points is

The assumption that the res of the league does not watch film of our team is wrong . The first two weeks of the season we feasted on turnovers ,stout defense, and a some timely special teams play. The things we saw today was by design because the Chargers can clearly see what EJ cannot do and the goal was to get us into a position where he will have to do it for us to win the game . The Chargers wanted to come out early and strike quick because falling behind and staying even allows us to run the ball The Chargers wanted to come out and take care of the ball to prevent giving us short fields because we have yet to prove we can go 80 yards multiple times and come away with points The defense held the Chargers to 22 points and somehow they were bad ? Thats a winnable game in the NFL with the weapons we have If the defensive gameplan is to take away the running game and force us to air it out AT home how can it be on anyone else but the QB. Teams will not stop trying to do what we saw today until EJ stops them from even wanting to . Get an early lead force us into a passing game and then make EJ make plays with his arm. -

The Chargers put it on EJ to win the game Get an early lead dont turn it over force EJ to have to throw We will see every team in the league use that same formula until EJ does something about -

less than 300 yards of TOTAL offense and basically daring EJ to beat them with his arm -

As I said earlier The Chargers dont fear the offenses ability to march up and down the field and so they can play it safe because they have the lead. Its easy to say open up offense more and be more creative but you call what your QB feels comfortable running . If EJ is struggling with accuracy on plays that the coaching staff feels he is comfortable running there is no way they are going to take a bunch of chances on plays in which he does not. Now he gets yet ANOTHER shot at it . Great learning opportunity for EJ but he has to take advantage of this at some point -

You can do exactly what Rivers is doing which drinking and dunking and taking what the defense gives you when you have no fear of the opposing offense. They are not the least bit worried about our offense having some point explosion as long as they don't turn it over or give up a special teams td . This lead might as well be 30 points . -
