http://www.nypost.com/sports/40876.htm ALL THE TUNA'S MEN By KEN PALMER -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email Archives Print Reprint February 20, 2005 -- BILL Parcells' legacy continues to grow. Even as the Tuna struggles in Big D, three more of his disciples continue to move up in the football world. Bill Belichick passed Parcells on the Super Bowl titles chart with his third championship two weeks back and both of New England's coordinators - Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis, who's headed to Notre Dame - have finally landed themselves major head-coaching gigs. In an ironic twist, Crennel is attempting to succeed in Cleveland, the same place the now-nearly-sainted Belichick failed mightily from 1991-95, when he posted only one winning season. Former Giants great Harry Carson said he doesn't have a doubt in the world that Crennel will be a smashing success. "I think Romeo's just as good as Parcells and Belichick," Carson told The Post. "He's just suffered because he hasn't gotten the name recognition. He's been an outstanding coach for a long time." George Martin also played under Crennel, a Giants assistant as special-teams and defensive-line coach from 1981-92. He actually credits Belichick as much as Parcells, if not more, for Crennel's ascent. "He's such a dedicated and intelligent man," Martin told The Post. "He was a very loyal individual and a real teacher." "Romeo was very low key and level headed," Carson added. "He can pop the whip when he has to, but he more tries to reason with guys." Crennel is just one product of the Parcells coaching factory, which also previously spit out Belichick and Weis. Tom Coughlin, who took Jacksonville to two AFC Championship Games, also got his start under Parcells, and Tuna also hired Jim Fassel, who led Big Blue to Super Bowl XXXV, as an assistant in 1991 before quitting as Giants coach. "That's a testament to the type of talent that Bill could discover," Martin said. Carson also noted that some of Parcells' former players are now making their marks in the coaching ranks. Former fullback Maurice Carthon was recently named offensive coordinator in Cleveland, while many consider former linebacker - and current Patriots assistant - Pepper Johnson to be future coordinator material as well. "Bill's coaches all have the same mindset," Carson said. "They want their players to play physically and be mentally and intellectually prepared." Parcells' track record as mentor isn't flawless, though. You'll recall that both head-coaching busts Chris Palmer (5-27 in two years in Cleveland) and Ray Handley (14-18 in two seasons with the Giants) learned from the Master Tuna, as did one-year Jets head coach Al Groh, who walked away after blowing a 9-4 start in 2000. DREW'S RUSE All the talk of Drew Bledsoe landing in Dallas is coming from Bledsoe - and Bledsoe alone. Sources in Dallas say the club has yet to even fully compile its offseason list of available free agents. While admitting possible interest in Bledsoe, who was released by Buffalo this week, the Cowboys certainly don't appear as sold on him as he is them. As for Bledsoe coming to the Jets, he'd have to have a major change of heart for that to happen. He still thinks he can start, and wants - at the very least - an opportunity to compete for the starting spot. He would not get that from the Jets, who are committed to Chad Pennington as their No. 1 guy. BEARS COOL ON KURT Another quarterback looking for work - soon-to-be-ex-Giant Kurt Warner - definitely isn't the slam-dunk in Chicago that everyone seems to think. A Chicago source told The Post that Bears coach Lovie Smith - Warner's former coordinator while with the Rams - isn't sold on the 33-year-old. Other possible destinations for Warner include the Bucs, if they release Brian Griese, the Lions and the Dolphins. Like Bledsoe, Warner needs a solid offensive line to be successful. Both players hold the ball far too long before releasing it. PIOLI EYES GIANTS From the NFL rumor mill comes this juicy tidbit. Those in the know in New England are speculating that Pats VP of player personnel Scott Pioli has a master plan that just might include biding his time until Giants GM Ernie Accorsi steps down. Pioli, another rising star and a certain future GM, turned down offers from the Browns and Seahawks this offseason to be interviewed for each club's GM vacancy. CAN LOSE 'EM ALL Harry Carson flew down to Georgia last Monday to witness history - albeit not the kind he would have preferred. Carson's son, Donald, is a member of the Savannah State basketball squad that just completed an 0-28 season, becoming the first school since Prairie View A&M in 1991-92 (and only the second in the last 50 years) to finish a Division-I season without a victory. Carson's son, a 6-4 senior, averaged 12.8 points per game for the record-breaking Tigers. WHERE WAS QUINCY? JETS DIDN'T KNOW Say what they will, the Jets had absolutely no idea where Quincy Carter was during their playoff run. First, they said he was sick, then tending to his ailing mother. While parts of both alibis may be true, no one in the organization had a clue where Carter actually was. A Dallas source said he wasn't surprised by Carter's disappearing act, since he pulled a similar stunt while with the Cowboys. Carter is reportedly in a treatment center after a drug relapse and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As for Herman Edwards' statement that he'd take Carter back as the club's No. 2 QB, don't believe that for a second. A Jets source told The Post the team wants nothing to do with the troubled Carter and is just hoping to help the free agent land on his feet somewhere else in the league.

I have no idea if draft choices where included or if the Cardinals plan on re-doing Henrys contract. This is the first time that this person has actually given me any information like this so I don't know if they are just pulling my leg. Well done. As for the substance of the news - can't say its all that surprising. This is of course "unofficial" news as the actual announcement of any trade (or the signing of any documents regarding same) needs to wait until March 2. -------------------- "Into this frothing sea of adversity flowed a red tidal wave of fury. Cardinal red. A dominating force of inevitability, unleashed upon a field of destiny. Red as the flowing blood of courage, red as a mighty torrent of rage, this wave would obliterate all in its path. Question is - with only making $5.5 million and having all of those superbowl rings , will he be able to feed his family. Maybe I should ask Lawyer Milloy and The NHL players association? -

http://www.nj.com/sports/times/index.ssf?/...07611208131.xml More | Subscribe | 14-Day Archives (Free) | Long-Term Archives (Paid) Eagles look to be fast shoppers Sunday, February 20, 2005 MARK ECKEL If history has told us anything about the Eagles and the way they handle free agency, it is they do things in a hurry. Unlike their final touchdown drive in the Super Bowl, the Eagles generally act quickly on both keeping the free agents they want and going after the ones they want on the market. Two of the team's biggest free agent signings of the past five years were right tackle Jon Runyan and defensive end Jevon Kearse. Both came within days of the market opening; Kearse came on the first day. They acted quickly again this offseason when they took just one day to slap the franchise tag on defensive tackle Corey Simon. Also consider that since head coach Andy Reid has been making the personnel decisions and team president Joe Banner the money decisions, once a key Eagle reaches the free agent market, he does not come back. What the Eagles do is come up with a figure they feel is fair and present it to the player they want to keep. If he accepts it, they announce the deal; if he does not, he hits the market, and more times than not finds a better deal from another team. That means this next week could be a busy time for Reid, Banner and a few of the Eagles' potential free agents. Free agency starts a week from Tuesday, so if the Eagles plan to keep middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, defensive end Derrick Burgess, guard Jermane Mayberry or anyone else, it could happen some time between tomorrow and a week from tomorrow. According to Times research, after placing the tag on Simon, which commits $5.134 million of cap space, the Eagles have about $12 million to spend, if, as expected, the 2005 cap reaches $85 million. If you put $3 million aside for draft picks, another $1.5 million for a tender on restricted free agent running back Brian Westbrook and $2 million for injury emergencies, the team will have less than $6 million to spend on keeping Trotter and the like, or going after anyone on the market. Trotter's deal will be the most interesting. He wants to be here. They want him here. The tricky part is coming up with the right numbers. Start with the five-year, $13 million deal (with a $4 million signing bonus) the team gave Dhani Jones last year and go from there. Trotter, a three-time Pro Bowler, deserves a better deal than Jones got, right? The team can save itself a few bucks when it gets rid of wide receiver Freddie Mitchell (cap saving of $200,000), and even more if and when it gets rid of linebacker Nate Wayne (cap saving of $800,000). There also are rumors the team may give Runyan an extension that will keep him around a few more years and lower his cap number this year. Here is a list of the current Eagles players who carry a cap value of $2 million, or more: Quarterback Donovan McNabb, $8.141 million; Runyan, $6.5 million; Simon, $5.134 million; Kearse, $5.015 million; tackle Tra Thomas, $4.295 million; wide receiver Terrell Owens, $3.889 million; cornerback Lito Sheppard, $3.4 million; Wayne, $2.9 million; cornerback Sheldon Brown, $2.6 million; safety Brian Dawkins, $2.21 million; defensive end N.D. Kalu $2.196 million. -- -- -- Wide receiver Freddie Mitchell made it clear to a few people during the course of last season that he did not plan to be back with the Eagles for the 2005-06 season. Frustrated by what he felt was a lack of playing time and lack of respect, especially from quarterback Donovan McNabb, the ever-confident Mitchell wanted a chance to go somewhere else. He even joked he would "pull a Welbourn" in reference to offensive lineman John Welbourn, who talked his way into a trade last offseason. The difference is Welbourn knew what to say and when to say it. He told The Times and then other media outlets that he didn't like the way the Eagles were doing things and mentioned the magic M word, Tom Modrak. It worked and he was sent to Kansas City. Welbourn got what he wanted, although he missed a Super Bowl, as well as the playoffs, in KC. Mitchell has gone too far by insulting not just some of the stars on the Eagles (Terrell Owens, McNabb) but by bad mouthing the Patriots. His lack of production through his career make it tough enough to move him; now his talking is making it almost impossible. A trade or a release will happen and Mitchell will be somewhere else next year. It just didn't have to be this difficult. -- -- -- Three name quarterbacks who had success with one team and were cut by another team will be signing with a third team in the next couple of weeks. Drew Bledsoe, formerly of New England and Buffalo, Jeff Garcia (San Francisco, Cleveland) and Kurt Warner (St. Louis, Giants) all will try again with new teams. Bledsoe appears headed to Dallas, where he will replace Vinny Testaverde and reunite with Bill Parcells. Although some sources think Cleveland will be in the mix. Garcia also could sign with his old coach, which would be Steve Mariucci in Detroit, where he would attempt to unseat the disappointing Joey Harrington. There also is word Garcia might go back to San Francisco. Warner could attract the most interest with Detroit, New Orleans and favored Chicago as potential suitors. -- -- -- Buffalo's release of Bledsoe combined with wide receiver Eric Moulds' new deal and the expected trade of running back Travis Henry will put the Bills close to $13 million under the salary cap. That should provide the team with enough room to fix its biggest weakness, the offensive line. But according to reliable sources, the player who might top the Bills' free agent wish list is New England kicker Adam Vinatieri. -- -- -- A soon-to-be free agent running back flying under the glare of bigger names Shaun Alexander (Seattle), Edgerrin James (Indianapolis) and Lamont Jordan (Jets) is James' backup with the Colts, Dominick Rhodes. There are those familiar with Rhodes who feel that given the opportunity the 5-foot-9, 203-pound back could be similar to the Eagles' Brian Westbrook. Obviously what the Colts decide to do with James will effect Rhodes' situation. If Indy lets James leave as a free agent, it would be smart for both sides for the Colts to sign Rhodes. If James stays, then Rhodes, 26, would look for a team that will give him a chance for more playing time. -- -- -- Tampa Bay continues to work on ways to get under the salary cap. Currently, it is $14 million over. First, getting rid of veteran quarterback Brad Johnson would save the team $4-$5 million. Next is a new deal for quarterback Brian Griese, who has a $6 million bonus that has to be turned into some sort of extension. The Bucs also are trying to get two of the team's most popular players - linebacker Derrick Brooks and fullback Mike Alstott - to rework deals or take a pay cut. Finally, linebacker Ian Gold could get released. NOTE: Mark Eckel is a Times staff writer.

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=36732 Sports Update Shelton drawing interest By Darren Urban, Tribune With the window for NFL trades about to officially open, it looks like the Cardinals will find a way to swap tackle L.J. Shelton, who asked permission to seek a trade earlier this month. Shelton has visited the Buffalo Bills, a team looking to deal running back Travis Henry. Among the other teams reportedly expressing interest are Denver, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Chicago. Shelton’s value went up last week when Seattle’s Walter Jones — the premier tackle scheduled to hit the free-agent market — signed a new contract with the Seahawks. It’s unknown exactly what the Cards would seek in return, although they are expected to ask for at least a first-day draft pick. With the league’s frontoffice types arriving in Indianapolis later this week for the annual scouting combine, trade talks should increase, especially since Shelton’s agents will also be in town. Trades can be discussed now but cannot be consummated before March 2. Shelton is under contract to make $3 million a season through 2008, a reasonable rate for a starting left tackle. Shelton, though, was replaced at left tackle by Leonard Davis in Arizona, and Shelton and coach Dennis Green haven’t had the best relationship. Earlier this month, Eric Metz, one of Shelton’s agents, said Shelton has not closed the door on returning to Arizona. But it now seems unlikely. "(The Cardinals) aren’t getting rid of him because he can’t play," former Cardinals offensive line coach Bob Wylie told the Chicago Tribune. "It’s about the money."

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football...2p-242132c.html QB or not QB? Here are the answers: Kurt Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, has sent 10-12 teams a copy of the tape the Giants made of every one of Warner's throws last season. The goal is to find Warner a team when the market opens March 2. The Lions, Bears, Cardinals, 49ers, Cowboys and Browns either need starters or want to bring in legitimate competition to challenge their incumbents. Three spots could be secured by coach-quarterback reunions: Drew Bledsoe-Bill Parcells, Jeff Garcia-Steve Mariucci and Brad Johnson-Dennis Green. If there were a draft of free-agent quarterbacks, here's how the top of the board would look: 1. Matt Hasselbeck Status: Now that Seattle signed OT Walter Jones, who had been franchised the last three years, it can tag Hasselbeck, although an $8 million cap number for him is excessive. Next Stop: He's made the playoffs two years in a row and it's hard to imagine Seattle not bringing him back. 2. Kurt Warner Status: Eli Manning's struggles actually help Warner. Turns out he was 5-4 with a bad team. Manning was 1-6. Warner needs a strong offensive line and playmaking receivers to succeed. Next Stop: A year ago, the Bears backed off Warner because they didn't want competition for former No. 1 pick Rex Grossman. But with Grossman suffering a season-ending knee injury in the third game, the Bears went with Craig Krenzel, Jonathan Quinn and Chad Hutchinson. And they still have no idea what they have in Grossman. This is the most likely spot for Warner, but Detroit is the dark horse. 3. Drew Bledsoe Status: He was 23-25 in three years in Buffalo and dumped because the Bills want to go with J.P. Losman, who was acquired with draft picks obtained from Dallas. Next Stop: He and Parcells didn't have the best relationship in New England, but it improved after they were separated. Parcells doesn't have the patience to develop Drew Henson. 4. Brad Johnson Status: He was good enough to win a Super Bowl just over two years ago in Tampa, but he was never Jon Gruden's guy and was benched after an 0-4 start last season. He didn't play another snap. He is expected to be cut by the Bucs. Next Stop: Green believes in interchangeable QBs, and bringing in Johnson would keep up his routine of a different QB each year. 5. Brian Griese Status: He's due a $6 million bonus March 1 and will be released by the Bucs if his deal is not restructured before then. Next Stop: He resurrected his career last season (20 TDs, 12 INTs, 97.5 QB rating) and Gruden wants him back. If he's on the market, he would keep things respectable in Cleveland or San Francisco, but he's never going to be an elite player. 6. Jeff Garcia Status: He never stopped complaining about the Browns offense. One of Romeo Crennel's first moves was to cut him. Next Stop: Mariucci wants competition for Joey Harrington, who has been a huge disappointment. Gruden tried to sign Garcia last year, and if Griese is not back, he may go after him again. 7. Vinny Testaverde Status: He will get squeezed out in Dallas if Parcells decides he'd rather have Bledsoe. The Cowboys have shown no urgency to bring him back. Next Stop: Now that Paul Hackett is gone, a return to the Jets as Chad Pennington's backup is a possibility. Sometime in the next 10 years, Testaverde will retire. 8. Jay Fiedler Status: He did a better job succeeding Dan Marino in Miami than Griese did taking over for John Elway in Denver. He lost his job to A.J. Feeley, and a $2 million bonus due in March guarantees he will be cut. Next Stop: The Jets should strongly consider bringing him back home to Long Island as insurance in case Pennington is not ready. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article.php?s...hreaded&order=0 Sabres Top 20 prospects Written by Ken McKenna on 02/18/2005 In the preseason version of this listing of the Buffalo Sabres Top 20 prospects, forward Thomas Vanek knocked goaltender Ryan Miller from the top slot that the goaltender had held for some time. But the pendulum has swung back towards Miller in this mid-season presentation of the Top 20, with the two Rochester Americans teammates reverting back to their former standings. This reversal is probably the most significant change in the top ten rankings, but there has been other movement in the lower half of the list that has a few new names appearing in the top 20 for the first time. Newcomers to the list include goaltender Michal Valent, a 2004 selection, and defenseman Nathan Paetsch, one of a handful of rearguards chosen by the Sabres in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. As has been the case for the past couple of seasons, forwards have a solid hold on the top ten, with defensive prospects being better represented in the lower half of the list. There appears to be a solid mix of offensive players and grinders amongst the forwards, with Vanek, Roy and Pominville representing the former and Paille and Stafford amongst the latter. On the other hand, the defensive prospects seem to suffer from the lack of a real standout performer, while the group itself is characterized by more undersized players with decent ability. The goaltending is obviously topped by Miller, with the Slovakian netminder Valent having the potential to develop into a solid goaltending prospect. Ryan Miller, Goaltender Height: 6'2, Weight: 170, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Ryan Miller is having a season that harkens back to his days at Michigan State. After a shaky start to the season, he has been one of the main reasons that the Americans are at the top of the AHL standings at the 2004-05 season’s midpoint. The East Lansing, MI native is at or near the top of several goaltending categories, with his play being consistent from November on. Miller leads the AHL in wins, and is tied for the lead in shutouts with seven, a figure that is an Americans club record. His strong play has not gone unnoticed, as he was named to the Planet USA squad for the AHL’s All-Star Game. Honors: Named AHL Player of the Week twice (11/14/04, 1/30/05), AHL Goaltender of the Month once (January), and was chosen to play in the 2005 AHL All-Star Game. Thomas Vanek, Left Wing Height: 6'2, Weight: 207, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Not unlike his teammate Miller, Thomas Vanek struggled out of the gate at the season’s outset. As he has become more comfortable with the level of play in the AHL, his performance has improved steadily. Vanek currently leads all rookies in power play goals with 10, and is third overall amongst rookies both in scoring (35 points) and goals (19). He is fourth in scoring for the Amerks, and leads that club in power play goals. Vanek was also chosen to play in the AHL All-Star Game, but elected to join the Austrian national team to help them earn a berth in next year’s Olympics. Honors: Named AHL Player of the Week once (11/28/04), and selected to play in the 2005 AHL All-Star Game. Derek Roy, Center Height: 5'9, Weight: 190, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Derek Roy has been said by some to seem indifferent in his play during the 2004-05 season, but you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell that from his statistics. Roy currently leads the Amerks in scoring with 47 points, a total that has him tied for 18th in the AHL in that category. Roy also leads his club in game-winning goals with six, and is second in power play goals (7) for the Amerks. If this is indicative of his indifferent play, it will be interesting to see what Roy can do when he is inspired. Jason Pominville, Right Wing Height: 6'0, Weight: 178, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Winger Jason Pominville is turning in another solid season in the AHL, his third in that league. The former QMJHL star has been typically productive offensively in 2004-05, as he currently stands third in scoring for the Amerks with 39 points. His 18 goals leave him second on the club in that category, and he also is second in game-winning goals (5) for the Amerks. Perhaps the lone negative for Pominville is that he is one of two active Amerks that has a negative plus/minus rating. Overall, though, Pominville has continued his solid play at the AHL level. Drew Stafford, Right Wing Height: 6'2, Weight: 200, Current Team: University of North Dakota (WCHA) One "Drew" is leaving town, but another might one day patrol the right side at HSBC Arena if recent events are any indication. The first non-Amerk on this list, Drew Stafford is turning in another solid season for UND. He is currently second in scoring for the Fighting Sioux with 26 points (9 goals, 17 assists), and his +9 rating leads his club in that category. Perhaps a greater reason for optimism is Stafford’s performance at the 2005 World Junior Championships, where he starred for the U.S. squad and led the team in points. While Stafford may not possess as much skill as the three forwards ahead of him on this list, he has the size and enough ability to be a good two-way forward in the pro game. Honors: named to Team USA for the 2005 WJC. Daniel Paille, Center/Left Wing Height: 6'0, Weight: 197, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) In his first pro season, forward Daniel Paille is trying to adapt to a new level of play the way most rookies do. Like Stafford, Paille is expected to develop into a grinding forward, but one with some versatility and some leadership qualities. While the former Guelph Storm star is not known for his offensive skill, he has shown flashes of some goal-scoring ability, including his first pro hat trick on 1/7 vs. the Cleveland Barons. Paille has made steady progress this season, so he’ll likely be an even better pro player next season. Clarke MacArthur, Center/Left Wing Height: 6'0, Weight: 180, Current Team: Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) The first player from the junior ranks on the list is Medicine Hat Tigers scoring star Clarke MacArthur. The versatile forward is again producing offense for his team, as he sits second on the Tigers and tenth overall in the WHL in scoring with 62 points in 44 games. His assist total of 37 is ninth in the WHL, while his 25 goals rank him 16th in that league. In addition to his strong play for the Tigers, MacArthur also had a productive role as an energy player for the gold medal-winning Canadian squad at the 2005 World Junior Championships. Honors: named WHL Player of the Week once (10/11/04), and was selected to play for Team Canada at the 2005 WJC. Paul Gaustad, Center Height: 6'5, Weight: 220, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Hulking center Paul Gaustad has continued the steady defensive play that has been his hallmark the past couple of seasons, but he has also picked up his offensive game some after struggling during the 2003-04 season. The former Portland Winter Hawk has already topped his goal total from last year, and should easily surpass his point total from 2003-04. Gaustad has been particularly effective when paired with another big forward, Chris Thorburn, with the two forming an imposing pair that isn’t afraid to mix it up along the boards. Denis Ezhov, Defenseman Height: 6'0, Weight: 195, Current Team: Metallurg (RSL) Russian defender Denis Ezhov is the first defenseman to make this list. He is currently playing for Metallurg in the Russian Super League, where he is said to be playing a solid defensive brand of hockey. The Togliatti, Russia native moved up the rankings with a strong performance at the 2005 World Junior Championships, where he combined with Toronto prospect Dimitri Vorobiev to form an effective first defensive pairing. Ezhov will never be known for his offensive ability, but he is very good in his own end. Honors: selected to play for Team Russia at the 2005 WJC. Chris Thorburn, Right Wing Height: 6'3, Weight: 220, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Banging winger Chris Thorburn has proven to be an effective grinding forward in his second AHL season. The Sault Ste. Marie, ON native currently has a +12 rating, which is tied for second on the Amerks, while his 115 penalty minutes ranks him third on the club. While not known for his offensive ability at the AHL level, Thorburn should nevertheless surpass his point total of last season, with his eight goals already topping the six he scored in 2003-04. Nathan Paetsch, Defenseman Height: 6'0, Weight: 195, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) After spending most of last season playing the wing, Paetsch has settled back into the defensive position that is most comfortable to him. The former WHL star came to the AHL with more of a reputation as an offensive defenseman who tended to shy away from the physical game. But in 2004-05 the opposite has been true for Paetsch, as he has concentrated on solid play in his own end while playing a more physical brand of hockey. Paetsch’s +14 rating leads the Amerks, while his 99 penalty minutes places him fifth on the club in that category. Michael Funk, Defenseman Height: 6'4, Weight: 194, Current Team: Portland Winter Hawks (WHL) Although he is still prone to the occasional glaring mistake, defenseman Michael Funk has made some strides this season towards becoming the player that some thought he could be prior to his draft year. Funk currently is a +9 on a club full of minus ratings, while his 25 points are second among Winter Hawk defensemen. Some long-time Hawks fans compare Funk to NHL journeyman defenseman Jeff Finley, albeit a slightly more physical version of the NHL veteran. Denis Denisov, Defenseman Height: 6'0, Weight: 180, Current Team: Ak Bars Kazan (RSL) As has been the case the past couple of seasons, there was talk that the Sabres were interested in signing Denis Denisov to a contract. But this has yet to take place, and, given the presence of other similarly built defensemen on Buffalo’s depth chart, it’s entirely possible that the steady Russian defender has simply been bypassed by other prospects. Still, Denisov is now in his fifth season in Russia’s top league, yet has only recently turned 23. The next logical step for him would seem to be the NHL, but for obvious reasons that is now on hold. Artem Kriukov, Center Height: 6'4, Weight: 187, Current Team: Yaroslavl Locomotiv (RSL) Just when it seems safe to write off lanky Russian center Artem Kriukov as a wasted pick, the resilient forward and former first round selection makes some worthwhile progress. Kriukov, who has been plagued by various injuries since being drafted by the Sabres, has managed to stay healthy over the course of the 2004-05 season. As a result, the 22-year-old forward has seen his most extensive action in Russia’s top league, mostly on an energy line featuring the likes of Alex Mikhnov and Denis Shvidki. Granted, the offensive ability that the Sabres saw in Kriukov has yet to surface, but any progress has to be seen as a good thing at this point. Branislav Fabry, Right Wing Height: 6'0, Weight: 185, Current Team: Slovan Bratislava (SVK) Slovakian forward Branislav Fabry has split time between Slovan Bratislava and Zilina in Slovakia’s top league, and has also spent time with Bratislava’s junior squad. The Bratislava native was very productive at the junior level, picking up 16 points in 16 games, but in a lesser role in the Extraleague has produced just one assist in 21 games. Fabry was chosen to play for Slovakia at the 2005 World Junior Championships, where he turned in a good performance for the offensively challenged Slovaks. Honors: selected to play for Slovakia at the 2005 WJC. Milan Bartovic, Left Wing Height: 6'0, Weight: 194, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Speedy winger Milan Bartovic is now in his fourth season with the Rochester Americans. He at one time was thought to be a potential scoring threat from the left side, but has not been able produce offense in the pros the way he did in his junior days. Instead, he could have a role with the Sabres as an energy player for the third or fourth lines, as he did in a stint with the big club last season. Andrej Sekera, Defenseman Height: 6'0, Weight: 200, Current Team: Owen Sound Attack (OHL) The third consecutive Slovak on this list is defenseman Andrej Sekera. Sekera left his homeland to play in the OHL for Owen Sound where he is currently that club’s leading scorer amongst defensemen. Perhaps Sekera’s biggest accomplishment this season was his participation in the 2005 World Junior Championships as a member of Slovakia’s entry. Sekera is a more offensively oriented defenseman with a bit of heft to his smaller frame. His skating is certainly adequate for the pro game, but it remains to be seen if he can hold his own in the North American game. Honors: named to the Slovakian team for the 2005 WJC, named Owen Sound’s Defenseman of the Month for January, 2005. Michael Ryan, Left Wing Height: 6'1, Weight: 191, Current Team: Rochester Americans (AHL) Former Northeastern University star Michael Ryan makes the list based more on potential than actual performance. For all intents and purposes, Ryan is a rookie since he missed a great deal of last season due to injury. The Boston, Massachusetts native has shown some of the skating speed that he is known for, but his offensive game has not yet come around. Ryan will soon be 25, so his window of opportunity is not as wide as that of a younger prospect. Michal Valent, Goaltender Height: 6'2, Weight: 185, Current Team: Sparta Junior (CZE) Slovakian born goaltender Michal Valent elected to move to the Czech Republic to further his career. Valent joined the Sparta organization for the 2004-05 season, where he has starred for their junior club. In 35 games, Valent has compiled a 1.76 goals against average to go along with a save percentage of .936. Valent is a lanky, butterfly-style goaltender who seems eager to improve his game, but he is still very much a work in progress. Dylan Hunter, Center Height: 6'0, Weight: 195, Current Team: London Knights (OHL) Dylan Hunter and his London Knights teammates are having a season to remember, with the Knights dominating the OHL like few clubs ever have. Hunter is having his best season yet, standing second in scoring for both the Knights and in the OHL. The Petrolia, Ontario native’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Hunter being chosen to play for the Western Conference squad in the recent OHL All-Star Game. The stocky pivot has improved his game each year in the OHL, and it will remain to be seen if he can continue that improvement in the pro game. Honors: named OHL Player of the Week once (11/22/04), chosen to play in the 2005 OHL All-Star Game. Copyright 2005 Hockey's Future. Do not duplicate without permission of the editorial staff.

from pro football talk CBA STATUS CAUSING CAP CRUNCH Kudos to Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune for pointing out an important point that many of the NFL media might have forgotten as free agency approaches. With the CBA between the NFL and the players union set to expire after the 2007 season, signing bonuses on any new contracts may be spread over a five-year period only. As a result, the cap hit resulting resulting from the signing bonus paid to Seahawks left tackle Walter Jones will be $1.01 million greater than previously reported in 2005. This phenomenon could cause serious problems for teams who hope to sign multiple players to long-term deals this offseason. Put simply, each deal will chew up more cap space than in prior seasons, making it even harder to stay under the total salary cap. The five-year rule also will affect the signing of players drafted high in the first round, where the signing bonuses end up consuming a significant chunk of the rookie pool, and the salary cap. The other thing to keep in mind is that, even though the current CBA has three seasons remaining, any extension likely will be hammered out before 2007, when the CBA calls for an uncapped year (translation -- the Redskins will sign every available free agency to one-year, $10 million contracts).

Jennings is not worth a franchise tag. It would be way too much money against the cap. Getting Shelton on the other hand would be a very good move $3 million per season for a starting left tacke and no signing bonus -

Weaknesses: Inconsistent...Has lapses in concentration and doesn't always give 100%...Speed is only average...Hands are questionable...Isn't a deep threat. Notes: A bit of an underachiever based on his measurables...Projects as a solid #2 receiver in the pros...Could be a steal if a team can get him to play up to his potential. -

BREAKING NEWS: NHL PLAYS
Happy Days Lois & Clark replied to JoeF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
From TSN League, union to meet Saturday TSN.ca with files from CP 2/19/2005 Suggestions that a deal has been reached to end the NHL lockout are at best premature and and worst dead wrong, multiple sources have told TSN. Friday's optimism was fueled first by news that the two sides were set to meet Saturday in New York, and then by the arrival of Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux to join the discussions. Late Friday night, there were several reports that Gretzky and Lemieux had actually managed to broker a deal, but both reports were quickly denied by both the NHL and the Players Association. Related Info McKenzie: Freaky Friday tough to explain Post-NHL cancellation stories won't die NBA boss Stern slams NHLPA tactics NHL Insiders NHL Insiders II Lockout News "The report is absolutely false," an NHLPA spokesman said late Friday night in reference to the first such story, which came from The Hockey News website. That sentiment was echoed by NHL vice president Bill Daly, who told TSN it was "entirely untrue and without foundation." While it's still possible the two sides could reach an agreement Saturday, a source close to the talks called the chances of that taking place "very remote". Still, the fact that the two sides are talking again was greeted as welcome news. "I've said all along that the most important thing is coming to an agreement," said New Jersey Devils CEO and GM Lou Lamoriello. "Even after the season was cancelled it was just so important to get together as soon as possible. "And I commend both of them for agreeing to do it. And now, get it done." Since NHL Commissioner announced the cancellation of the season Wednesday afternoon, there has been a flurry of activity in hockey circles, with general managers, agents and players desperately trying to resuscitate the talks. "I think both sides took a step back the next day and realized 'we were that close,"' Calgary Flames superstar Jarome Iginla said Friday night from Edmonton. "And I think both sides realized that for the big hit hockey would take, maybe we needed to take another crack at it." "I can only hope that both sides realize they owe to the game to allow common sense to prevail," veteran agent Don Meehan of Newport Sports said Friday night from his Mississauga office. But there remain serious differences that must be bridged. There are several owners upset with the league's final offer of a $42 million dollar salary cap, feeling it was too high. "That number ($42.5 million) would have been a tough sell at a governor's meeting," said one high ranking team executive contacted by TSN. On the players' side, there are those who felt betrayed by the union's decision to agree to a salary cap so late in the process, after vehemently refusing even to consider one previously. Several participants on both sides of the divide have been discussing a "laddered" salary cap - one that would start at $42.5 million, and gradually work it's way up to $45 million, and those suggestions were mentioned frequently by those who felt there was a deal imminent. But as of now, no such deal exists. -

Based on a Sporting news profile prior to last season 6'5 207 age 25 Strengths: Has great size and speed. Can make catches over his shoulder and win most jump balls. Isn't afraid to go over the middle. Plays with great intensity. Is an outstanding special teams player; went to the pro bowl last year Weaknesses: Needs polish and experience. Lacks an explosive first step and doesn't show great burst. Rounds off routes. Bottom Line: Bannister lacks lateral mobility and reliable hands, but could be an excellent #3 receiver in time.
-
He was very raw coming out of college. Now he is still raw but has now been in the NFL for 4 seasons. Last season he was injured. In 2003 he was a probowl gunner on special teams He hasn't been used much as a receiver in Seattle much because they have 3 quality receivers ahead of him and he is still developing as a WR The Bills brought him in last offseason for a look but would have had to give up a mid round pick. If they were to sign him this offseason they would not have to give up anything. Because he is coming off of a season of injury he could come very cheap. I think this kid has potential & would be a good pickup for the Bills
