  1. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2007959 Bell will get $10 million in guarantees ESPN.com news services Kendrell Bell was having trouble convincing teams he can stay healthy. The Chiefs were having difficulty convincing fans they were getting better on defense after losing out on Samari Rolle and other defensive players. That made Bell and the Chiefs a perfect fit. Bell reached a contract agreement for more than $5 million a year that included $10 million in guarantees. The deal, which is being finalized Tuesday, will be seven years in length. The former Steelers inside linebacker missed four games in 2002 and almost the entire 2004 season because of injuries. Most teams wanted to do a provisional deal that would pay him well for one year but give them the option to let him go after the season. The Chiefs decided on a conventional deal that includes a signing bonus and future guarantees. Bell had visited the Giants to open free agency and hoped to get a $13 million signing bonus and $6 million a year. But the Giants had questions about his sports hernia surgery and durability, opting to sign Redskins middle linebacker Antonio Pierce. The Chiefs had been juggling their emphasis at linebacker between Bell and Ed Hartwell of the Ravens, ending up with Bell. Bell is a 6-foot-1, 254-pound linebacker who had nine sacks as a rookie and made the Pro Bowl in 2001. The Sporting News named him Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2001. "We're pleased to acquire Kendrell's services and we think he will make an impact for the Chiefs in 2005 and beyond," team president Carl Peterson said. "He's a quality football player, as well as a quality person." Information from ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report.
  2. http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm TAYLOR WANTS OUT OF MIAMI? A league source tells us that, in the wake of the Miami Dolphins' acquisition of defensive ends Vonnie Holliday and Kevin Carter, Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor soon could be requesting a trade out of Miami. Taylor, we hear, is miffed by the possibility that he'll be shifted to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Such a change would reducing Taylor's sacks by limiting the number of times that he actually would be rushing the passer. The fact that Taylor is a prominent member of the "old guard" Dolphins players also could be influencing the burgeoning feud. New coach Nick Saban, we suspect, probably would like to jettison holdover players who are in position to undermine the new regime in the locker room. But Saban surely can't unilaterally dump Taylor with incurring the wrath of the fan base and the local media (whom Saban already has pissed off by clamping down on the flow of information). So what better way to engineer Taylor's exit than to goad him into asking to be traded? This way, Saban gets what we believe he really wants without (if he's lucky) the P.R. fallout. If Taylor ends up on the block, the most obvious trade partners are any of the three teams with franchise-tagged running back. The Seahawks have running Shaun Alexander, and need a replacement of Chike Okeafor. The Bengals have Rudi Johnson, and Justin Smith is entering the final year of his contract. And the Colts have Edgerrin James as part of an offense with far more firepower than the team's defense. The fact that Dwight Freeney is entrenched as the right-side defensive end in Indy might, on the surface, reduce the Colts' interest in Taylor. However, Taylor moved around a good bit in 2004, and he got half of his sacks from the left side, where he typically was facing the opponents' second best tackle. Stay tuned. We have a feeling that the situation is going to deteriorate quickly in South Florida.

Jets | Fiedler May Sign with Team - from www.KFFL.com Tue, 8 Mar 2005 15:05:31 -0800 ESPN's John Clayton reports free agent QB Jay Fiedler (Dolphins) may sign with the New York Jets.
  4. Vikings | Smoot Agrees to Terms - from www.KFFL.com Tue, 8 Mar 2005 16:19:05 -0800 Jay Glazer, of FOX Sports, reports the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with free agent CB Fred Smoot (Redskins) on a multi-year deal worth $34 million, including a $10.8 million signing bonus. He'll team up with Antoine Winfield
  5. Josh Reed is a blocking wide reciever but he has problems getting open and drops too many passes. GIve me someone with who can separate and has decent hands
  6. I'd consider trading down in the 2nd and take Nugent or a offensive left tackle Jones or a CB in the 3rd would be good
  7. I think Gandy is a posssibility to start at C
  8. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/playerpro.../mattjones.html Matt Jones Official Bio College: Arkansas Height: 6-61/4 Position: Wide Receiver Weight: 242 Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.39 SCOUTING REPORT Strengths: Has amazing athletic ability...Very good size...Has a lot of potential and showed he has the ability to make the move to wideout in Mobile at the Senior Bowl...Very tough...Appeared to have good hands...Fiery player with a great competitive spirit. Weaknesses: Very raw and has never played a position other than quarterback...Will need a lot of work and development...May lack a killer instinct and be too laid back...Is he truly dedicated to the game of football or was basketball his true love? Notes: Was also a top high school basketball player and saw some time on the court with the Razorbacks...Could also project to quarterback or tight end in the pros...Interesting prospect who really doesn't have a clear position. - Scott Wright
  9. Having Nate & Ty as a tandom would be great for this year The Bills could consider franchising Nate next season& signing him to a long term deal but could also trade him after he is franchised
  10. Fred Miller Offensive Right Tackle Free Agent from the Titans is deciding between going to the Saints or the Bears. The Bears are a team that was most likely to get LJ Shelton if the Travis Henry deal fell through If Miller signs with the Bears they will no longer need to sign another offensive tackle, therefore Arizona's best option would be to trade for Henry, therefore providing the Bills with a quality left tackle
  11. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/135115 He caught 71 ball last season & missed 2 games I don't know how cheap he'll come , but It's someone to look into at TE
  12. I think that getting Shelton would really solidify the left tacke spot
  13. JETS THINK JORDAN DEAL WAS "INSANE" Word out of New York is that the Jets regard the five-year, $27.5 million contract running back LaMont Jordan signed with the Raiders as "insane." Earlier this week, Jordan left the Jets for Oakland after four seasons in New York. With 292, 316, 190, and 479 yards rushing in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, respectively, Jordan never was able to take a serious dent out of starter Curtis Martin's touches. Over the same four seasons, Martin had 1513, 1094, 1308, and 1697 yards, which was a career high and a franchise record. Though the Raiders surely were paying Jordon not on performance but on potential, there's no guarantee that Jordan can carry the load as a full-time, 20-plus-touches-per-game tailback. In fact, the Raiders need look no farther than their own roster for one of the most recent examples of a guy who was great off the bench, but who fizzled out as the No. 1 back. Amos Zereoue, who played his way into the starting role with the Steelers in 2003, quickly found his way back to the bench after an ineffective stint as the go-to guy in Pittsburgh. Even if the Raiders hope to create the same one-two punch with Jordan and Zereoue that Bettis and Zereoue had formed with the Steelers, it's a lot of money to pay to Jordan in the hopes that he can carry the load successfully. We're also hearing that the Jets knew once defensive tackle Jason Ferguson hit free agency that they had no chance to keep him. He originally signed a four-year deal to stay with the team in 2001, but then abruptly suffered an injury during training camp and missed the entire season.
  14. Sunday, March 6, 2005 Bledsoe couldn't complete Bills NFL Insider By Mark Curnutte Enquirer staff writer The Bills lost faith in Drew Bledsoe. Though replacement J.P. Losman is a question mark, Buffalo coaches and management have more faith in the new guy. Simply put, the Bills decided Bledsoe took them as far as he could in 2004. They had the NFL's No. 2 defense and the No. 1 special teams unit and Bledsoe got them to 9-7. Bledsoe threw for more than 250 yards in two of 16 games. He hasn't thrown for 300 in 30 straight games. They're not a title contender with Bledsoe, so the Bills might as well find out if Losman can succeed. The Bengals' Marvin Lewis is among a group of coaches who say Losman has star quality. "Based on what I saw of him at the Senior Bowl last year, you could see that he has all the tools," Lewis said of Losman. "He's an athletic guy, he can make all the throws and he'll do what he has to do to win in the NFL. The sky's the limit for the kid; I really believe that." PATS PARADISE: The mild stroke that might end the football career of Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi wasn't the only offseason sign that New England's Super Bowl run might be fading fast. The Patriots cut Troy Brown. Guard Joe Andruzzi left for the Browns, and wide receiver Derrick Mason bypassed them to play for the Ravens. He'd rather have Kyle Boller throw to him than Tom Brady. There's more: The Pats cut cornerback Ty Law and released linebacker Roman Phifer, and there are reports that personnel genius Scott Pioli wants the Giants' general manager job once Ernie Accorsi retires. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis left for the Notre Dame job, and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is Cleveland's new coach. Coach Bill Belichick refused to comment on anything when he showed up at a downtown Boston theater for the unveiling of the DVD about the team's Super Bowl championship. BUSY SAINTS: New Orleans needs cap space for potential long-term deals with wide receiver Joe Horn, running back Deuce McAllister and center LeCharles Bentley, all of whom are entering the final year of their contracts. NO CONSENSUS: Looking ahead at the draft, Tennessee general manager Floyd Reese sees no clear order of players. "I think the top is hazier from the standpoint that if you were to ask 10 different GMs or directors as to the top three or four or five players, you might get 50 different answers," Reese said. "I think part of that has to do with the fact that the draft from an overall scheme is moving toward more need. "Which means, if you're looking for a tackle, the kid at Florida State (Alex Barron) looks better than if you're looking for a receiver, where the kid at Michigan (Braylon Edwards) might look better. And if you're looking for a running back, somebody else will look better. And in each one of those different scenarios, that kid pops into the top two or three." NOT OLD: Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad will turn 32 in May. But no team needed receivers worse than the Bears and their 32nd-ranked offense, so they signed him one day after Carolina cut him to avoid a $10 million roster bonus. "Terrell Owens is 32, Marvin Harrison is 32, Jimmy Smith is 35," Bears GM Jerry Angelo said. "Twelve years ago, Jerry Rice was 32. There's some history of receivers in this age bracket, and they can go into their mid-30s. We're a young football team and want to get older. He's a quality, experienced player." Muhammad is coming off his best season with 93 catches for 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns. If he catches 43 passes for three touchdowns next season, he'll be better than any wide receiver Chicago had. The Bears also could guarantee Muhammad would be their No. 1 receiver, which is more than most other teams could promise. Written, in part, from notes provided by other NFL beat writers.

  16. Free-agent news & rumors Coles-Moss trade is set; Cardinals corral Warner; Browns add Baxter, Dilfer By PFW staff March 5, 2005 Updated at 8:05 p.m. EST, March 6, 2005 The rumored trade between the Jets and the Redskins involving WRs Laveranues Coles and Santana Moss is nearly complete. The deal, which has been in various stages of discussion for more than a week, got back on track when Coles and the Jets agreed on a restructuring of Coles' contract. Although a few details have yet to be worked out, the only real hurdle left before the trade is made official is for the two players to pass physicals Monday. Both receivers have battled injuries during their careers. This will apparently be a one-for-one trade involving both teams' No. 1 receivers, a rare occurrence in the NFL. NFC West The Cardinals reached agreement with UFA QB Kurt Warner on a one-year contract Sunday. Warner had visited the Bears and was scheduled to stop in Detroit in the next few days, but he decided that Arizona presented the best chance of being a starting quarterback again. Josh McCown finished the season as the Cardinals' starting signalcaller, but head coach Dennis Green hardly showed the utmost confidence in McCown. … On Friday night the Cardinals agreed to a five-year, $17.5 million contract with Steelers OT Oliver Ross — their first free-agent signing this offseason. The 6-5, 322-pound Ross fills a critical need at right tackle. … Two safeties, Steve Gleason (formerly of the Saints) and Robert Griffith (formerly of the Browns) visited the Cardinals Friday. Saturday visits are expected from Seahawks DE Chike Okeafor and Ravens MLB Edgerton Hartwell. The Rams have visits planned with two "tweener" defensive backs this week — Michael Hawthorne, who was cut by the Packers Friday, and Cardinals UFA Michael Stone. Most importantly, though, they are scheduled to talk with franchise OLT Orlando Pace’s new agents about a multiyear contract. … Rams UFA DE Bryce Fisher plans on a trip to his hometown of Seattle Wednesday to visit the Seahawks. The Niners re-signed DL Chris Cooper Saturday night. Cooper, who left the Raiders under a cloud last season when he was fined for reportedly testing positive for the designer steroid THG, appeared in 10 games for the Niners after being picked up in early November. He started two games and registered one sack. The Seahawks traded veteran QB Trent Dilfer to Cleveland over the weekend in exchange for a fourth-round pick in next month's draft. Dilfer will be missed in Seattle because he provided a shoulder to lean on for starting QB Matt Hasselbeck and accepted his backup role with great class. He also was very well-respected because of the way he dealt with the death of his 5-year-old son two years ago. That said, the Hawks need Hasselbeck to take on a stronger leadership role, and that process may be easier with a player Dilfer no longer casting a shadown over Hasselbeck. … In a pair of expected moves Friday, the Seahawks released LB Anthony Simmons and S Damien Robinson, clearing $1.625 million in salary cap space. Simmons played in only six games last season as a result of undergoing shoulder surgery and then breaking a wrist. Just two years ago Simmons had signed a five-year contract worth $23.75 million, but he has missed 21 games in the past three seasons. Meanwhile, Robinson sat out the entire 2004 season with a shoulder injury. … RFA Rocky Bernard visited with the Texans Friday. The Jets are also interested in Bernard, but Seattle has the right to match any offer for him or get draft-pick compensation. … The Seahawks are expected to look into the availability of Ravens ILB Edgerton Hartwell and Steelers ILB Kendrell Bell before the weekend runs out. AFC North In a stunning turn of events, Ravens CB Gary Baxter signed with the Browns on Friday. According to reports, Baxter was prepared to re-sign with Baltimore. But when he looked at the contract, he saw he was receiving a signing bonus of $7 million, not the $11 million he thought he would get, according to The Baltimore Sun. At that point, negotiations apparently stalled, and Baxter ended up with the Browns, who needed another starting-caliber cornerback after Anthony Henry signed with Dallas earlier in the week. The loss of Baxter weakens Baltimore's secondary. While not regarded as a shutdown cornerback, Baxter was serviceable enough playing opposite Pro Bowl CB Chris McAlister. Now, the Ravens must go find another starting cornerback, as a capable replacement is unlikely to come from the current roster While the Browns gained Baxter, they lost QB Kelly Holcomb to Buffalo late Friday. That left the Browns temporarily in great need of a capable veteran to compete with young QBs Luke McCown and Josh Harris. Over the weekend, though, Cleveland moved quickly to replace Holcomb, acquiring Seahawks veteran QB Trent Dilfer in exchange for a 2005 fourth-round draft choice. With two inexperienced quarterbacks as his competition, Dilfer figures to have a good opportunity to open the 2005 season as the Browns' starting quarterback, even if the team drafts another signalcaller. Dilfer is being reunited with GM Phil Savage, who brought the QB to Baltimore in 2000, when he led the Ravens to a Super Bowl win. … Late Friday the Browns signed former Bengals P Kyle Richardson to a one-year contract Friday. Richardson will challenge Derrick Frost for Cleveland's punting job. Richardson spent last season on injured reserve with a torn biceps muscle. Browns general manager Phil Savage is familiar with Richardson from their time together in Baltimore; Richardson was the punter for the Ravens' Super Bowl run in 2000. AFC East The Dolphins reached a contract agreement with former Chiefs UFA DE Vonnie Holliday late Friday night. The deal is for two years. There is some speculation that the signing of the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Holliday, who is more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher, may signal a shift to a 3-4 defense by Miami. It was not immediately apparent how the signing of Holliday would affect Miami’s pursuit of other defensive linemen. The team had former Titans DT-DE Kevin Carter and Saints UFA DE Tony Bryant in for visits this past week, and Eagles UFA DE Derrick Burgess reportedly was scheduled to visit Tuesday. Not wanting to go into next season without an experienced backup quarterback, the Bills signed former Browns QB Kelly Holcomb late Friday. Holcomb will provide insurance behind young J.P. Losman, who was given the starting job when the team released veteran QB Drew Bledsoe last month. During his eight-year career in which he has started 12 games, Holcomb has had some impressive performances, including a five-TD, 413-yard game vs. Cincinnati last season. NFC South The Falcons re-signed return specialist Allen Rossum to a four-year contract over the weekend, and they inked UFA PK Todd Peterson to a one-year deal. Rossum has been a key contributor for the Falcons as a returner of punts and kickoffs and as a nickel defensive back. The signing of Peterson, who spent the past two seasons in San Francisco, likely means the end of UFA PK Jay Feely's tenure in Atlanta. The Saints have found a replacement for ORT Victor Riley, whom they expect to lose in free agency. On Saturday, New Orleans signed former Eagle Jermane Mayberry, who can play either guard or tackle, to a four-year contract. The Buccaneers re-signed TE-LS Dave Moore on Friday. Moore had only three receptions last season, but he also serves as the club’s long-snapper. AFC West The Raiders re-signed UFA DE Bobby Hamilton late Friday to a three-year, $6 million contract. Hamilton played in all 16 games last season, his first as a Raider after four years in New England. AFC South The Texans re-signed a pair of their unrestricted free agents Friday — FB Moran Norris and CB Jason Bell. Norris is the lead blocker for Houston’s ground game, and Bell is a major contributor on special teams.
  17. Bills report: Notes, quotes March 6, 2005 Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel · Inside slant --The Bills' search for a backup QB to Losman may center on Detroit free agent Mike McMahon when the dust settles. He's very athletic and would easily fit into coach Mike Mularkey's system. Upgrading their No. 3 receiver spot where Josh Reed has been a disappointment is also a possibility down the road. Baltimore's Kevin Johnson, who has voided his contract to become a free agent, is looking to revive his stardom and would make a nice complement to Eric Moulds and Lee Evans with his deceptive speed and hands. His price tag may be too much, however. Meanwhile, it's believed Chiefs long-snapper Kendall Gammon will visit the Bills, who need to explore options if Jon Dorenbos can't come back from a knee injury. --Bills officials are confident that financially strapped Erie County will continue to honor its lease obligations concerning game-day expenses and maintenance at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Those obligations amounted to more than $6 million in 2004. If not met, the county would technically be breaking its lease, giving the Bills the option to move out of Buffalo. A club spokesman told Buffalo television station WKBW, however, they are not focusing "on the defaults of the lease." And Bruce Fisher, deputy county executive, said: "The county will abide by all of its contracts." Legislator Al DeBenedetti, a noted critic of the Bills' lease with the county and New York State, has an opposing view. "It's just a question of five million more dollars he doesn't have to spend," he said of Bills owner Ralph Wilson. "That he gets to keep as profits, that comes out of the pockets of the taxpayers of Erie County at a very difficult time." QUOTE TO NOTE "It hurt me when I heard they said I was asking for too much when I haven't even talked to anybody. They put it out there I was the bad guy asking ridiculous money, and I hadn't even talked. But I want to say thanks to the fans. I was there when we weren't so good and there when we got to 9-7 and helped build something. I just have to move on. But I would've loved to stay a Bill." -- Unrestricted free agent LT Jonas Jennings, who signed with San Francisco.

  19. CBS Sportsline's 5 teams that could overtake the Pats -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On CBS Sportsline, they have in their NFL Insider article a list of 5 teams that Pete Prisco believes can overtake the Patriots this season. They are: Colts Ravens Jaguars Falcons Bills Personally, I'd like to know what Prisco is smoking? On this list, at least in my opinion, there is only 1 team that has ANY chance of overtaking the Patriots, and that is the Colts, and even that is no sure thing. Here's my opinion why none of these teams will be the ones to overtake the Pats: Colts- Until they can learn to win in Foxboro, or anywhere outside and cold come January, the Colts will continue to be a great regular season team, and just an OK playoff team. Plus, their defense has ONE, and only one player that scares anybody: Dwight Freeney. Ravens- Good defense, but no offense. To stop Baltimore, all you have to do is stop Jamal Lewis. Kyle Boller isn't going to beat you and their best receiver is their tight end Todd Heap. Jaguars- Bill Belichick and the defense would give Byron Leftwich fits. The Jags are just too young to compete with the Pats. Falcons- Real simple, stop Michael Vick, you stop the Falcons. Philadelphia proved that in the NFC Championship game. Plus, the Pats offense would make the Falcons defense look mediocre at best. Bills- They are starting really a rookie QB this season in JP Losman, their offensive line is in rough shape, and the Bills defense, other than the 31-0 opening day victory a few years back, has yet to prove they can stop New England consistently.
