I hate to read too much into this, but man it really sounds like our offense is going to be rough again this year. Maybe some day we'll get a QB and a competent OL.
Sounds like it'll be completely different and more fun to watch.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Cassel's upside that he was the accurate veteran?
Again, apparently Tyrod was best.
No. Just the veteran part.
-
The Bills need to start planning for a worse case scenario now if EJ or Tyrod , well you know.
Start by hiring the best QB scouts for the next draft money can buy.
They might have to give up a lot like Wash did to move up for RG3 or throw in a probowl player .
If the Bills OL becomes solid , a move up deal like Sammy might do it.
it might benefit them to take a gamble by trading with a team like San Fran right now, predicting that they'll be bad enough for a top five pick next year. The price at this point won't be as much, as opposed to trying to trade next April. Of course, you'd be giving up a superstar and giving them one. It's a big gamble, but Whaley would look like a genius if it paid off.

Connor Cook
Yeah, I've been on the Cook bandwagon since April.
I'm pretty convinced they can get a good QB in the first next year.

I think Tyrod will be used in "specialty" situations. Didn't Rex use Michael Vick like that in NY?
Rex already said Tyrod will be used for the read-option, right? Even if he doesn't win the job outright, he'll still see some playing time.
-
Bsically, the price will be high and it won't be easy.
Hopefully, they draft a winner.

FWIW TBD's golden boy Sal Capaccio just tweeted this: "65% Matt Cassel. 25% Tyrod Taylor. 10% EJ Manuel." -#Bills starting QB chances as of today in the opinion of @SalSports. What do you think?"
Discuss.
Gross, Sal Cappuccino. Just gross.

With Rex's comment around EJ using his legs more and his interest in TT, I think Rex and Roman want to execute a lot of roll out/option type plays. I am picturing a clear out route by the wide out with intermediate crossing pattern from the backside, and the QB has the option to hand off, throw (bomb or intermediate), or decent run in space by the QB. This type of offense would get me very excited. Also wasn't it what made Kaep successful (and Wilson still)?
Also count me in the ABC club.
Yes. This is what they want to run, I think. That's why I think it's ultimately between EJ and Tyrod. If Cassel has to go in, they can switch up the O to a more west coast philosophy, which teams won't have game tape on and it could give us an edge. If we were in that situation mid-late season, hopefully that edge keeps our playoff hopes alive.
With you entirely here. It's a pretty simple proposition; you either become a pocket passer or you fail in this league. Russell Wilson is experiencing success for precisely that reason; he has become a pocket passer and this forces a defense to defend more of the field. If Taylor can't develop into that type of QB, he has little chance for long term success as a starter.
GO BILLS!!!
Some say the reason why SF failed last year is that Kaep has not developed into a sufficient pocket passer.

this is no big deal, every team does this, media making it a bigger story, when the cardinals are cleared I expect a full apology
Ew

@MarkLud12: All 3 QBs spoke after practice. It's striking just how much bigger EJ and Cassel are. In comparison, Tyrod Taylor looks more like a WR.
Good tweet

As a backup. But as the founding member of the ABC (anyone but Cassel) club, I'd root for him like crazy if he wins the job.
But as a lesser version of Vick, who has been a disaster the last few years, I struggled to see Taylor could be an every game starter. But if Roman (not Rex) thinks he is a starter, I'll roll with it.
Sal Capaccio said they were running formations where the QB reversed to become one of the lead blockers...this doesn't seem smart.
-
Rex won't get a tattoo of a Tyrod jersey. He won't make that mistake again.
-
-
That's largely contingent upon the time and windows that will have to be provided by the OL.
Read-option, play action, and rolling pockets with Tyrod. Same thing Roman did with Kaepernick. We know he's a threat to run. The question is if he's capable of spreading the field vertically with his arm. If he can, he'll be very effective.
-
That is not true.
The first thing I said is he has a strong arm. That has zero to do with accuracy. He is said to have pretty good accuracy on the long ball, too. But all I said was that he has a strong arm. In order to scare defenses you need one and he has it.
The second thing I said is you don't need him to stand back and survey the defense and throw strikes as much. That LESSENS the need for accuracy. Of course you want a QB to be as accurate as possible, and I wasn't making any judgment whatsoever about his accuracy on middle range throws. But what I said was, that kind of offense would lessen the importance on pinpoint accuracy, because there would be far less of those plays, which is usually of extreme importance.
I would agree to some extent that a QB still needs to be accurate on WR screen passes, and that the difference between a pass that is even 6 inches off target hurts the play in so far as the WR catching it on the dead run and being able to avoid the first tackle. But it's still the easiest pass a NFL QB can make, and there is no indication whatsoever that Taylor is inaccurate on those plays. In fact, Corey Graham has said that he's a very good passer and he went against him in practice for two years. On gr today there was a Ravens reporter who watched him for four years and said he is a good passer and there is no reason he cannot play well as a starter.
It sounded like you were talking about short, quick passes of the west coast systen variety. Asking Tyrod to stand tall in the pocket and consistently make those throws seems unlikely.

Tyrod has a convert! Let's see what happens when the real action begins.
After one mini-camp practice. This is happening now.
-
Everything you say in that last paragraph requires a very accurate QB who is on target with his WRs. From what I have seen in print, Taylor is an inaccurate QB. If that is the case, then having the speed WRs is useless.
You're right. They won't be running a west coast passing system with Tyrod. That's just not what he does.
-
Yep, that's why game film > combine #s
I just imagine Whaley working up a simple Power Point presentation around this concept in 2011 and delivering it to a stunned crowd at OBD.
Been drafting pretty well since then.
-
If the Bills continue their model of drafting quality starting caliber LB's and trading them for 26 year old All-Pro skill position players, we'll win the next ten Superbowls.
Next year will be Preston Brown for Alshon Jeffery straight up.

He'd be a fun president though
Fun to laugh at, I guess.
But then we'd realize he's leader of the free world and just cry ourselves to sleep.
-
Donald Trump?
Ew.
-
Pittsburgh Steeler roots?
Yep. I'm glad he's following that model. We just need to get our Big Ben.
-
And even the 2020 class looks good. See what I'm getting at?
It's ok to have an opinion on a future draft class.

Well, we need to be good in the intermediate-deep area. Our run game will open up opportunities there.
