  1. True, but did you ever watch EJ play at FSU? There is a reason he wasn't viewed as a first round pick. Even his college coach basically said he wouldn't be a successful pro. It's one thing to miss on a QB, it's another to simply make a bad pick. The poster is correct that QB's get GM's fired as well. You don't have to agree with the practice, but he is correct. That is exactly my answer for the OP. That is why the Pats GM still has a job while Whaley doesn't. The Pats GM doesn't have to do as well drafting as Whaley. He has more leeway because he has Brady. Whaley didn't have Brady, and as a result more was required of him to make the team a winner. The Pats GM doesn't have to do as much to make the team a winner. He has Brady. It's a bottom line business measured in wins and losses. No one cares how you get those wins. If you don't get those wins you are done.
  2. I think we've had trouble attracting talent because this franchise has a losing reputation. Ralph was also a very thrifty owner who didn't want to pay for the best talent. Green Bay has done just fine, and trust me when I say Green Bay is a far worse place to live than Buffalo. The Pegulas are willing to spend money. That should no longer hold us back. Now we just need to build a reputation that tells people this is a good franchise to work for.
  3. Same for me. He plays a ball hawk style of safety. He made tons of big plays at OSU last season. Hall of Famers like Ed Reed played that style of ball. However, that style of play worries me. Players like Ed Reed are rare. How productive will Hooker be if the big plays fail to appear in the pros? If he isn't getting turnovers and he can't tackle, what value will he have? He was also only a one year starter at Ohio State. I think Hooker will be a good pro. I just don't see him being a great one. We would have had to use the 10th pick on him. I'm happy that we didn't.
  4. There's a lot going on in this thread. I've learned quite a bit. So will Russ Brandon eventually become mayor of Buffalo?
  5. DeShaun Watson followed closely by Malik Hooker.
  6. Will the Pegulas be hiring the GM they want? or will McDermott be the one doing the hiring? We shall find out soon.
  7. I think that the McDermott taking control portion has already happened. That's why I find it unreasonable to believe that Brandon still has a say in football decisions.
  8. Some of us believe he has made football decisions in the past. That's another debate altogether. My point is that it certainly isn't happening anymore or ever will again. This makes Brandon quite secure in his job. He's the marketing guy now. He doesn't have a greater role anymore. That makes firing him pointless.
  9. This team isn't moving anywhere, and if you want to jump off the wagon now go ahead. McDermott finally has this franchise headed in the right direction. The only thing I agree with is that the thanks Whaley stuff is pretty funny. He made good money and now he's gone. Our results with Whaley were the same as every GM before him during this playoff drought.
  10. Pegula likes him. It's quite simple. I have always believed he had too much influence. Now I feel that has changed. At this time his presence probably doesn't negatively impact football decisions anymore. It's clear that McDermott is running the show. It seems that McDermott has been given total control by the Pegula's. McDermott won out over Whaley, he isn't going to let Brandon make decisions.
  11. Exactly. It's not something to celebrate but it's all part of the business. It doesn't get much more bottom line orientated than an NFL front office. It's all measured in wins and losses, nothing more and nothing less.
  12. I didn't like the Sammy trade, but now we have him. You can't take the trade back now. Due to that I feel the same as you. Very well said. You aren't giving him much motivational incentive. Why wouldn't he want to go play with a better QB?
  13. I really like Darnold,Allen, and Falk. Not sold on Rudolph or Rosen.
  14. I can understand that side of it. However, in many ways you're giving him an incentive to get "hurt" now. For all we know he might give up on this season so he can go play with a real QB. Pick up the option and you are giving him a reason to be all in. It's hard to tell where his head will be at this season. He might be extra motivated to have a great season so he can cash in. On the other hand he might phone it in to go elsewhere. None of us actually know how badly he wants to be here.
  15. Exactly. He can do enough to win games, but he doesn't have the skill set to take a team to the next level. His playmaking ability can help his team put points on the board. Problems arise when he needs to be a real QB. Look at the final series against Seattle this past season. When he is forced to make a throw at a crucial time he can't. Those are the type of games that separate the contenders from the pretenders. I was in favor of keeping him this offseason as I didn't see any better options. That doesn't mean I think he's the long term answer.
  16. I think you may have just created the entire motto of the NFL in one sentence.
  17. Never heard of a whiskey factory. I think means Kelly would be fine here. Don't worry though, he's not coming here.
  18. A better question would have been, is Cardale done? McDermott might not be as impressed with Cardale as Whaley was. That Jets game while meaningless was still quite damning.
  19. It's really not just the corner position. This franchise has seemed adverse to re signing our own players for quite some time. Look at the Watkins debate people are having.
  20. What he's worth hasn't changed though. The trade was made because he was considered a rare talent with the potential to be elite. He still has the same ability. You don't find guys like that everyday. What has changed? He's going into his forth season. Receivers often take time to develop. I didn't like the trade to begin with, but it doesn't make sense to give up on him now.
  21. Yep. I'd like to know how far Manning and Brady could/can throw a ball later in their careers.
