I think the bigger problem at GR is just the complete lack of intrest that the Hosts of the afternoon show have in learning football. Outside of jeremy white, whose opinion I don't always ( read hardly ever agree with) and Sal, they seem to be almost willfully ignorant about sports. AND Analytics. If I felt so inclined I could demonstrate why, in about 5 minutes why his( mike Schopp) NEVER punt theory is ridiculous and wrong on so many levels. But it would be a waste of time, Since he's convinced he's the smartest guy in the room. He's also convinced he's right. Apparantly he dosn't understand that the Patriots going for 4th and 3 from the Miami 15 when they are up 10 is not the same as the bills going for 4th and 3 from thier own 5 against the Seattle Seahawks when they are down 10. AND thats the simplest scenario, factor in weather, o line vs dline runningbacks, and on and on and on... but I digress.. First let me dispel a myth that this coaching staff is unbiased. I have a source, can’t name him , but I trust him ( I know convenient right? Don’t care If you believe me or not) But the source has been reliable and I’m told that Roman refused to come here unless we got Cassel or someone like him. Rex Ryan has absolutely favored Tsquared since he got here he wanted him as a jet and at first opportunity went out and got him. That’s not bias. That’s talent evaluation. The coaches would think “EJ isn’t good” and want help. Standard. We’ve all read the story about how Roman wants Cassel and Ryan wants Tsquared. So that lends further credence to the source. IN my opinion. So don’t peddle the myth that this coaching staff isn’t biased. We haven’t read this story. You’re saying it to me now. Of course Roman wants a vet that will run the plays he calls and stick to doing what he’s told, rather than a more free-wheeling QB. Ryan is a gambler and see’s the home run ball in Tsquared. But let’s face it Ryan is a defense first kind of coach, so his judgment is suspect on the O side of the ball. They all want to win. They want the guy that will win. Secondly you can make the case that Ej played against 2 nd and third stringers, BUT he wasn’t with ones, that’s called a level playing field, and with 0 help with his O line and running game, he willed the team to victory. Stayed calm, found the open receiver and threw a strike. Then he went out and got the 2 point conversion. WHAT more could you ask of him? The greatest chef in the world can’t do much behind the counter at McDonalds. “Willed the team to victory” is quite a story. What you could ask of him…is consistent performance for the months worth of practices…but he hasn’t given you that. Instead he gave you a TD against guys that won’t be on an NFL roster. The media here had Ej buried from the start, and the OC and HC had their favorites coming in. EJ would have to be perfect to unseat those guys. SIGH. it works till defenses figure out that you go fo rit allthe time,and put 11 guys on the line. its goal line defense. and as I've said on other threads, you are guaranting points to the other team. Even if your 4th down conversion rate is 70% you are still losing against a team that punts. BTW I happen to be an analyst and can tell you that the data that those analysts are using is skewed. AND skewed badly. there are so many variables to consider and you would have to look at every 4th down by every team, and take into consideration EVERY variable and weight each one and then do correlation and causation studies... and you'd have to d it over a signifgant amount of time to get a large enough sample siaze that the results will mean something. I am sure they haven't done that. Mostly because the data probably isn't there. For instance, what defense were the opposing team playing against? are they good agains t the run in short yardage? what alignment were they in. How good was the offense, were they running the ball well that day, what was the score? where were they on the field, what was the weather, was it a fluke play(defender fell down, tipped pass that went right toyour own guy, etc), what injuries on both teams, what were the teams records, were they playing at home, on grass? astroturf? What was crowd noise like that day, attendence. at thats just off the top of my head.
