I think the problem is the deadspin staff USED to like writing about sports and being funny. Then they became sanctimonious and political, which hurt the sites’ bottom line. Then the site got sold, twice. Then when management said, “hey do you guys mind writing about sports and being funny like how we used to when we were profitable” they compared themselves to Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali. And then they quit. And then a new dude got hired to write about sports and they shamed him into quitting his new job for not being as sanctimonious and political as them. I don’t know what the cool move was, but they aren’t cool.

My friend, Minshew was a sixth rounder out of East Carolina and Wash State. He hasn’t played half of a full season in the NFL. He didn’t even take starter reps in preseason. M He has managed to throw 13 TDs to 2 picks. He has a 98 passer rating. He is throwing to something called DJ Chark and Chris Conley. So would we. I think Dalton beats the Pats. I think Dalton makes the Eagles game close.

Right. And even teams like Carolina look at the top QB’s in the draft. To pretend like no one in Carolina looked at Watson after a down Cam Newton year is ignorant. I’m talking about the make and break career part. NOBODY would have reacted to the Bills taking Watson like the Giants taking Jones this year. Nobody.

It’s just kinda funny. Watson was a projected top 10 pick. How hard would it have been to pick him? No GM in the NFL had Watson as a Brian Brohm 6th rounder. No one would say, “McD reached on a 4th round pick at #10!” That’s not with the benefit of hindsight, that’s a fact at the time. The Texans going to get Watson 2 picks later was not bashed. Watson had the pedigree, the big game experience. I actually accept your argument for Mahomes. Not Watson.

Just like in the real world, if being so afraid of making a wrong decision prevents you from making the right decision, you are useless.

Maybe, maybe not. Is there a single person in the NFL who would have faulted McD for taking Watson at #10? If not, then your argument is that McD was a coward.

He drafted his CB and WR and LT of the future that draft. Youre basically saying that every pick in 17 should have sucked because McD was a recent hire. That’s a really interesting easy defense mechanism.

Whether Buddy “chose” EJ or not, EJ was just as much if not more of Whaley’s boy. Nix “chose” Fitz by giving him a big contract and two years later when he sucked was recorded as wanting to walk away. Whaley gave EJ 2 years, and then kept him in the mix an extra 2 for good measure. Nix retiring set our franchise back 5 years.

I mean, is QB drafting the rocket science you’re saying it is? Trubisky, Watson and Mahomes were all projected 1st round picks. Watson has been to two National Championships. It’s not like Watson and Mahomes were projected day 3 picks that you needed to be in person to see.
