JA makes TB12’s and Manning’s top five QB list
GunnerBill replied to BillsFan619's topic in The Stadium Wall
Who will only want to pass 4 times per game. -
I think we need to disaggregate "critical" from "negative." I am not negative about the Bills. There are always elements of the decision making - around coaching, ownership, roster building, player performance that can be criticised. Some of those criticisms will be justified, some won't and some will be disputed either way. I agree there are some people who are inherently negative and just see everything as an example of a hopeless franchise that will never get out of its own way. The BBFS remains strong in some. But most people are just trying to critique where we stand at any one point and right now going into the season the two areas that the majority of us were concerned about - safety and wide receiver - remain big question marks. the gameday thread is fun it isn't supposed to be taken in any way seriously. It's a stream of consciousness not a genuine discussion.

Yea, I mean maybe he was, it wasn't clear but that isn't how I interpreted it. I think it was just the order they were popping into his head. We've all done that you start trying to do a list from memory and then realise you have left something out..... ask my partner about the weekly shopping trip which if left to me becomes three weekly shopping trips before I've completed the list 😆 -

It wasn't a ranking I don't think. He wasn't trying to put them in order. -
Correct SVPG has been exclusively 3rd string at center. He did get a bit of run on Saturday at guard with a version of the line that was a mix of 2s and 3s but Anderson stayed in at center in that drive. Overall I'd describe SVPG's pre-season as "solid." But to rise up the depth chart he'd need to pop a bit more or have the guys above him to struggle and neither of those has happened.

Receivers the Bills could go after?

The debate on Coleman was raging on this forum long before he ran the 40 in Indy. I remember distinctly being on a train platform on a cold, rainy, January morning typing a post on here on my phone saying my indicative receiver rankings after doing 3 games of all the perceived top guys had Coleman as WR9. That was looooong before the Combine. The only guy I really moved after Indy was Troy Franklin. I think I might have bumped Worthy a point or two as well but I dropped Franklin significantly and the reason was that the concern I had about his film was the exact issue that showed up in the gauntlet drill. You should never react just to the underwear olympics, but when you have a concern about a guy on film and you are going back and forth about how to weigh it up and then it shows itself so starkly in testing as well.... that is when you factor it in. -
They will certainly miss Morse's ability to pull and even on some of the trap play stuff they did last year where his quick feet inside are an advantage. McGovern is mobile but he isn't Mitch Morse. But on the flip side in straight ahead run scenarios McGovern should be an upgrade. Morse was a weakness in those situations and actually they had good short yardage success last year running in the B gap between McGovern and Dawkins.

The way Manning phrased it about Herbert though I do understand what he is saying. I think he said "as talented as any of 'em" and while I don't necessarily agree he is as talented as Mahomes or Allen I think he is more talented than anyone else. I don't think the problem with Herbert that keeps him from being truly in the elite conversation is talent. I think it is heart and mentality. -

Yea I hate this point. Not true of me AT ALL. My concerns about Coleman's tape were on this board before the Combine. I was surprised he ran that slowly at the Combine but it didn't change my opinion of him at all. -
It was a bad throw. I don't disagree with you Coleman has to make that catch. But it still isn't a good throw. It is fluttering and not where it needs to be. It is still definitely catchable. But it is a poor ball.
-
I see that to an extent. But Keon Coleman should still FEEL like he is in prove it mode with every single snap.
-
He should have caught the ball. Despite it being a bad throw.

If it is the play I am thinking of it was a definite designed roll out. He definitely had one, about that down and distance and going that way. I don't have access yet to the all22... we sometimes wait longer this side of the pond for it to drop. But will double check it once I do to see if it is the play I'm thinking of. On the INT he looks wide open at that point because the DB has stopped playing the play. He is looking right at Mitch who is winding up to throw middle of the field. Go back a second or two there he isn't wide open. There are two plays from that collection that to me are slam dunk going to Coleman if Josh is in. The first one and the penultimate one.

I'm really starting to love this WR room. We quietly got better

If every down is a lie-down, sure. Agree on this. I don't think it helps Rousseau lining him up wider. Indeed it kinda negates his reach advantage a bit. It would help AJE to line him up wider the type of rusher they have turned him into. Which is kinda why I think he is suited to mainly playing 2nd/3rd and longs where you can do that. -
Yea, whoof on that one. WTF is Trubisky doing trying to bail there? That is a wide open NFL throw. If this is the play I'm thinking of it was a designed sprint out right play for the Quarterback so I think that one he is running the route for eye candy not much more. That is a hard throw under pressure. Maybe Allen makes it but my guess is Allen runs around the defender closing and tries to pick up the 1st with his legs. Agreed. That was the one I spotted during the game too. That was a well designed concept. Unfortunately DiNucci doesn't know the playbook. The defender there is following the QBs eyes. Coleman is not as open as he looks by that point because the DB has already seen where Mitch is going with the ball.

The Dolphins don't IMO. Their receivers are better and their safties are better (can say that of two thirds of the league this year). The only other position I give them an edge is running back. Everywhere else I'll take the Bills. It was less commented upon but the Dolphins lost guys this offseason too. I can take an argument that the Jets roster is better - it certainly has some young ascending guys. That all comes down to whether the jerk playing Quarterback still cares and can still play.

I'm always excited for the season. No change here. I do think this is the weakest Bills roster in 5 or 6 years but that does not affect my enjoyment. I was excited for the season in the 7-9 years too. If sport isn't fun then stop watching. There are hobbies that play with your emotions far less so if you don't enjoy it don't watch it.

Agree with the bolded. Don't agree on starting SVP. I think McGovern has been fine. The accusation in here that McDermott had decided his plan pre-draft and so SVP hasn't been given a chance is being made by the same people who decided they wanted SVP as the starter the moment he was drafted. McGovern is the right choice for now. He has been clearly the best of our three IOL through the two games.

The three high picks I break down as so: 1. AJ Epenesa - they picked him and then spent 18 months transforming his body and play style. That was a remarkably brave approach. If his last two seasons had been his first two seasons the perception of him would be different. I'm still personally not sold on the idea of him as a starting, every down, defensive end, which limits the value. But I do think he has good pass rush upside now. 2. Greg Rousseau - I think Groot is a really good player was a good pick. The only defensive end that has surpassed him in production from that class is Jaelen Phillips and Rousseau is a better all around player. I don't think he is ever going to be a true high end pass rusher. He doesn't have the range of pass rush moves to be that IMO. But he is still ascending and his all around game is excellent. 3. Boogie Basham - okay that one was just a bad pick. It was a bad pick at the time. It's a bad pick now. -

They have a challenges because three years worth of decision making has undervalued wide receiver and left them with Mack Hollins as a likely day 1 starter. Even if Samuel and MVS are healthy, right now if I was predicting the Bills starters week one in 11 personnel its Hollins, Samuel and Shakir. -
Alpha's All-22 review pre-season game 2
GunnerBill replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
DAZN which us non-Americans rely on for our all22 has only got seven games from the weekend up so far and the Bills is not one, so not had a chance to go back and watch it yet, which I am interested to do for the series that the "first team" offense was out there to look specifically at the receivers. But I did watch the first half of the game back last night on the tv view and my two additional reflections on what I saw originally: 1. Van Demark played a LOT better at right tackle on Saturday than in any of his outings there last year. For all Tylan Grable has had a great camp and pre-season I think RVD is your swing tackle. Grable is here as a developmental tackle on the 53 who is the in-house option for next season if Spencer Brown walks. 2. Javon Solomon HOLY freaking MOLY. I thought he was good on a first view. Focussing in just on him second time around.... my god. He was off the hook. I do not think him passing Von and AJE on the depth chart by the end of the season is off the table if he can play like that. He won his rep almost every single down.
