I belive offically 12 inches was credit as falling during the storm but is was blowing so hard that it was impossible to accurately measure snow (winds frequntly gusted over 50 mph and I believe the peak gust was over 70 mph!). The offical National Weather Service criteria for blizzard is: A violent snowstorm with winds blowing at a minimum speed of 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour and visibility of less than one-quarter mile (400 meters) for three hours.

Yes, that is actually what happend during the blizzard of '77. The winter of '76-77 was one of the coldest on record with numerous snow storms. Lake Erie froze much earlier than normal with snow piling up on the eastern end of the lake on the ice shelf. Then along came the infameous blizzard which blewt he snow piled up on the lake into WNY. I believe there was already almost 3 feet of snow on the ground prior to the onset of the blizzard. Watertown on the eastern end of Lake Ontario which was not frozen had something like 75 inches of lake effect snow during the blizzard.

I've never seen the Dead live but my brother was a big fan. I've always enjoyed their studio albums but the live stuff was too long to hold my attention. I guess it was different if you were there in person. The "Space" jams always sounded like somebody tuning their guitars to me.

NY tracks (Aqueduct was supposed to be the first) was supposed to get slots but the Federal indictment (NYRA) has put a hold on that. NYRA might lose the exclusive race franchise all together after 2007 to private interests. It has been a tough couple of weeks in the horse racing industry. Afleet Alex was injured and will miss the Haskell and Travers. Several other prominent horses have retired recently due to injuries, then you have the jockey knife fight at Deleware, the jock death at Colonial, and the women jockey who was paralyzed in Wv.

I actually saw Eric and JP together a couple of weeks ago on Erics boat at Buffalo Small Boat harbor. THe boats name is Catch 80 and has big Bills helmet logo on the back. JP was sitting on the back of the boat as we drove by in my brother in laws boat.

I would definetly reccomend a trip to Saratoga. One of the most beauutiful tracks in the country with the top trainers/jockeys and horses to boot. It is where I fell in love with horse raceing. The NYRA on the otherhand is trying to sink thoroughbred horse racing in NY. On opening day the first race was a Steeplechase. Three jockeys fell off their horses and were injured. Then in the second race the computers went down and ontrack betting ceased. In addition the centerfield tote/video screen was not working. The trainers are pissed because they do not have a large enough detention barn ( where horses must go 6 hours prior to racing to prevent chemical cheating). NYRA set up tempoary stalls inside tents which are cramped and hot. Purge the likely favorite in one of yesterdays races had to be scratched because of how hot it was inside the tents. To top it off there was not enough electical outlets to provide a fan for each stall. Saratoga is the crowning jewel in NY racing and this is how they prepare??? NYRA which controls racing in NY is in shambles. They are under federal indictment, and have been hemoraging millions of dollars the past couple of years. This past Spring/Summer meet at Belmont was lackluster and the racing secreatry and Vet were recently fired. They are taking one of the best (if not the best) racing circuits in the country and running it into the ground.

I'm a shift worker like Lori and follow a similar sleep regimen. When I work graveyards I get home around 815 am and sleep from around 9am- 3 pm, then take a short "nap" from 9-1030 pm (if I can get it which is hard to do in the summer with 3 kids).
