If I was James Cook I'd be picking Shady's brain all week
Flip Johnson replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's not about his brain. Marv used to talk about 'balance' as one of the most important and underrated attributes for a RB. Thurman and Shady did not have amazing straight line speed but they had balance. This will be a good test for Cook -
Jordan Poyer Mic'd Up: Bills vs. Patriots
Flip Johnson replied to Warcodered's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's impressive to see Poyer still contribute even after the injuries and without the foot speed he's had in the past. He's using his brain, his intensity, his physicality, and his leadership, and it's a privilege to see. -
This is a critical point. They hate the Steelers and are not going to give them a free pass into the playoffs. This the same team that has won like 20 straight games in the preseason. I would expect Lamar to play a portion of this game and Harbaugh will go after the win.

Eisen "Don't let the Bills in the playoffs"
Flip Johnson replied to Scott7975's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bills are not lacking the playmakers to win the Super Bowl. The weapons could and probably should get better in 2024, but the team has a top 3 QB and a blue chip WR and RB. -

Former Bill Jim Leonhard leaving Wisconsin Coaching Squad
Flip Johnson replied to BisonMan's topic in The Stadium Wall
If you ever read Collision Low Crossers by Nicholas Dawidoff (Rex Ryan era Jets, 2011 season), you will get a great sense of Leonhard's knowledge as a player. It is obvious in that book that he would be a great coach. Leonhard had season-ending injuries in 2010 and 2011 and in both years that team fell apart without him. He was the most essential player for understanding and implementing Rex & Pettine's defense - during the time it was actually effective. -
If this was the 1990s and Klein could play in a 4-3 he might be a borderline Pro Bowler. In 2021 he is problematic out in space. But he is smart and attacks downhill and brings great physicality. Great veteran depth, but the idea that he makes Edmunds expendable is ridiculous.

Brown is still raw, but to get a specimen like that from a small school and have him play at that level is only his second career start in Arrowhead is an incredible find. He plays with a ton of energy in the run game ... he is not out of control but he is whistle to whistle.

McDermott press conference 9/2 and practice updates
Flip Johnson replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree. I also think "drops" in the NFL have a lot to do with anticipation and timing. Knox could probably catch 100 straight balls on a JUGS machine his rookie year. But he drops the ball in real games, because at game speed when you are still figuring out footwork, timing, soft spots in the zone, etc. the ball can get on you faster than you anticipate. The point is, I believe his hands are fine. I think he's going to take a step in his feel for the game and when that happens his drops will go down. -
Truly solid CBs don't get cut. With the salary cap as it currently exists everyone has to make compromises with their depth. The Bills have legitimate issues at CB and OL if there are injuries. But the solution isn't going to be on the waiver wire. It's going to be on this coaching staff to get guys that aren't ready in August up to a functional level.

Beasley breaking "Omerta"
Flip Johnson replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1) Beasley's behavior is dumb. 2) The Bills can't be happy about it. And also: 3) We just need to get to August. This is a dumb summertime story. When it's time for football, Beasley will be all football. -
You can't have a. top 5 starting QB and a top 5 backup QB (unless he's on a rookie deal like New England and Jimmy G). It's hard to pull off financially but more than that it makes no sense for the backup. Trubisky is a back end starter, high end #2 - why would he want to go somewhere in his mid 20s where he has zero chance to compete?

New England finished last season losing 5 of 9, with Brady and before opt outs. They weren't remotely close to the top level AFC teams at the end of 2019. There would have been no reason to run it back with Brady and think anything would get better. Obviously their record would have been better this year with Brady, but that wouldn't have advanced the long term interest of the team. Re: Pioli's comments, I don't think he recognizes how loaded the AFC is with young QB talent. The conference is stacked and it will likely be adding Lawrence and Fields. As for New England, I think letting Brady go was the right football move from the long term perspective, but there are signs that the franchise is starting to drift. Kraft has slipped, they let the cap become a problem, Belichick has hired his sons, and a lot of the top level assistants have left. It's hard to think that leading the league in opt outs (by a wide margin) was a coincidence.

It's a good time to sign guys who really don't need extensive practice time or playbook study.

Dodson is going to be a factor or the Bills would have let him go a long time ago.

Josh Allen Tops NFL.com's dark horse MVP List
Flip Johnson replied to foreboding's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The MVP almost always goes to a QB and often goes to a breakout player. It is a good bet if you can get JA at 50-1. It is basically playing a parlay that says: The Bills go 12-4 The Bills win the AFC East Josh Allen has 40 total TDs (he had 29 last year). Those three things could easily happen. -
SI: Are The Bills Ready To Take The Division?
Flip Johnson replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
New England went 4-5 in their last 9 games last year. They lost to Miami at home in a must win game. They don't have a good roster and they are going into a rebuild. People talk about the Cassel year ... Matt Cassel was a decent player who took over an incredible roster. He was an NFL level starter and ended up taking KC to the playoffs a couple years later. Bill has never had a New England team like this. They are not winning the division.
