I think in all honesty Vince Young will get a deeper look than Freeman. Young is older, more mature, more willing to be a backup when Manuel returns, and work with Manuel on making him a better QB. Freeman is immature, more of a "me" person, still fresh off of selfish actions, and will probably want to be in a situation where he is the perminant starter. When EJ returns, he'll create problems. Young has "been there and done that". He did well with GB during preseason, and can run the same offense.

wasnt kiko's draft spot the one we got in the austin trade?
-
I see your point, and I agree that a player like Anquan Boldin is available for a 4th or 5th round pick go for it. Point is, aren't alot of those players. Despite our draft history, there are a few gems that can be found in the late rounds. Looking back the last couple of years, it's tough to gauge a late round pick on one or two seasons. Sometimes it takes longer for those guys to grow into NFL players. Also keep in mind that late round picks can also be used to move up in the early rounds. Bills may want to have a couple of those in their pocket next draft so they don't have to wait to ge the guy they want and lose him.
-
it's because front offices have a plan. they grow through the draft, and it takes years to do so. there plan was to take EJ this year with their first pick. once they do so, they have to give him the opportunity to become the bills future qb. it takes more than a year to gauge that. the next year they need to continue to add playmakers at all positions. using 1st and 2nd round picks are prime spots to do so. repeating a first round pick with another qb doesn't make sense, when the qb you have has shown that he has what it takes at an early stage to be the guy you've been looking for. there are no guarantees. not ej, not teddy bridgewater, not rglll...none. but in order to find out if someone is a dud, you need to give them time. plenty of HOF qbs have had rough starts to their career, and i'm talking losing records and stats that aren't that great. they grew into champions. that's what we need to allow ej to do.

Ugh! Unlike many on this board who are the faint of heart, a 6 week injury doesnt warrant using another 1 st round selection on a QB. There was no guarantee that EJ was even going to play much this year with Kolb in the fold. Now if he doesn't play X amount of games we start from scratch?. I hope to God our front office isn't that stupid. EJ has displayed plenty to show he has what it takes right now to be groomed as our future QB. Whether that growth translates into being a franchise QB 2-3 years down the road, no one knows. But now is not the time to throw in the towel. To soon. A smarter GM would go after pieces to help build this team into a champion. A little help at the OL would be greatly appreciated. Also another lights out CB. Maybe addressing another area that we may lose to free agency? Shutter the thought. Entering 2014 I don't see QB as our greatest pressing need, and I would bet my mortgage that the Bills as well as other draft prognosticators would agree. If the Bills DID have to use an early pick next year on a QB, then they shouldn't be in the position to make the pick in the first place. That being said, I have full confidence in and feel great using the 1st round pick on him this past April. So, along with the "trade EJ and CJ so we can get a top notch waterboy in the 1st round next year", let's not lose our heads guys. Give the guy time to grow before we yank the rug from under him.

I will admit I was one of the fans saying "who is that guy" when he was drafted cuz there were other more nameworthy linebackers around.B But he has stud written all over him. He's another Urlacher, and is gonna make this draft class look stellar for years to come.

I really thought that the game vs. Carolina would be a watershed moment for Mario. Yet, it seems he's gone back to being just ordinary. 1 game Vs. Carolina, he had 5 tackles, 1 Asst, and 4.5 sacks. 3 Games vs. NE, NYJ, Bal. he has had 3 tackles, 3 Assts, and 1 sack total. Averaging a tackle and assist per game and a registering a sack every couple of games is a headscratcher for a guy who had to have known coming into this season that he had to up his production Bills need Mario to start becoming a weekly force in the backfield, especially with Buffalo's secondary on the mend.

Bills Daily Prediction of 13-9 is absurd
dezertbill replied to Iwantasuperbowlwin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You just never know these days. Any two teams can put up a clunker now and then. The Browns and Bills both have two inexperienced QB's and Defenses who are getting more credit than their offenses. Plus you take weather into consideration and it's tough to say. I wouldn't say it's an impossible score, as we have all seen the Bills struggle in the redzone this year. But I truly feel the Bills can pull this one out. -
I agree. I think the Bills aren't in a position where they think they are one player away. I also don't think they are a team that needs a total rebuild. If you can get quality for a player like Byrd who the FO has had problems resigning that's one thing. Otherwise, all this talk about trading any of our core offense players is just ridiculous.

Matt Flynn... Sunday GM missed on this one.
dezertbill replied to Mike in Horseheads's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm thinking we should bench Spiller and see if Flynn can be our #1 tailback in the read option.... Oops! Sorry! Wrong thread! Continue on.... -
I couldn't agree more. There was a reason Spiller was on the field last week as a decoy even though they didn't run him, that's because the mere threat of him makes teams accountable for his presence. That's what you call a play maker. Maybe Spiller is trying to do too much, which is why he is "dancing" as you say. But make no mistake, he is the most explosive offensive weapon the Bills have, and benching him should result in an immediate sanity check on Doug Marrone. You play your best players, unless they are too hurt to play. You don't trade them, bench them, or sell them on EBay after a couple of bad games. As for Easley, covering special teams is different than running routes and making plays downfield as a receiver. Although I wouldn't mind him getting more reps as a receiver, I love the duo of Steve Johnson and Robert Woods. I also like TJ Graham and Scott Chandler. I'm also licking my chops for when Goodwin returns. I don't see any of those guys doing anything that would warrant giving their playing time to Easley.

When your 0-2 you can pull off what they did with TR. Now 2-2, they would lose their fans forever if they decided to move young talented players on cheap contracts, especially on offense that are helping Bobby Hoyer. They aren't trading anyone anytime soon, unless they are a backup for a veteran who can't get on the field.

Aaron Williams is a baller
dezertbill replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Couldn't agree more. Buffalo's secondary had their backs against the wall and Flacco and company were licking their chops after seeing the Jets tape. They gave up a few big plays, but were gigantic on 3rd down (which they have been horrible at stopping thus far in 2013) and created game changing turnovers that led to Bills points. Kudos to the entire group. Even a Brandon Burton sighting and a big play in the endzone. That was good to see. -

Newsflash....he's a rookie. Right now it's about seeing positives in each game. He finally began running the ball instead of just handing it off when they ran the read option and it lead to some big plays. Even the play when he fumbled, you could tell that play would have opened up. Rookie mistake. This game was really about the defense. Secondary rebounded with the help of Kiko Alonzo, who along with Robert Woods is making this draft class thus far look spectacular. They finally made stops when they needed to, instead of forcing the Bills to drive down the field after giving up the lead. Buffalo also sustained a very nice drive in the 4th quarter until EJ threw that interception (yes, he underthrew the receiver. Rookie mistake...he'll learn on that one). I saw alot of positives today. And bottom line is they won against a pretty good team. 4 games, all of which they have been in and haven't lost by more than a touchdown, and they are .500 early in the season. I'll take it and hopefully EJ and Buffalo's defense can build confidence from today's win.

ESPN...Teams targeting tired Bills D
dezertbill replied to Kemp2Warlick's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills have fasted-paced offense. Quicker than Chip Kelly & Peyton Manning.... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000251659/article/cj-spiller-surprised-buffalo-bills-have-fastest-offense -
Lol. Bills fans come in all levels of intesity. The fact that you don't scream to trade the whole team whenever we lose a game probably makes you more of an educated fan then most. Passion in a positive way is always welcome Rock-on, and enjoy the fun with the rest of us.

This hit's it squarely on the head! Freeman has all the tools. Probably the reason why he was given as long as he had. It's obvious that Schiano is old school. He's very passionate, and it sounds like he challenged Freeman to have a "Peyton" type work ethic, and he fell on his face. Even the players didn't name him captain this year, which speaks volumes, and also shows it wasn't just Schiano who saw this. All the crap about Schiano "politicing" the players into not voting for Freeman is bull. If players want someone to be captain, they will make them their captain. Even if he did have influence, it shows the players believe in Schiano over Freeman, not a good sign for the QB. You don't need guys like Freeman in your locker room. Saw him in an interview last year and he had the attitude that he is and always will be a starter and didn't show much humility to what he was dealing with on and off the field. He'll be a cancer to EJ, and EJ's attitude is night and day compared to Freemans.
-
Any QB facing the Bills right now is licking their chops at the prospect of facing our secondary. We are thin, and as coach says it's the "elephant in the room". Bills need to figure out how to take the pressure off of our secondary. Geno had all day a few times and picked us apart. We need to mix things up and make Flacco uncomfortable early. I agree that the read option hasn't been very creative. I have only seen EJ take it and run a few times. Right now its too predicable. EJ needs to keep it more. They need to do more bubble screens or short in-routes. Roll EJ out of the pocket more often. His greatest weapon is when he is on the move in space. The pocket isn't condusive for that when the defense has their ears pinned back and are in attack mode almost every passing down.

Easley played against alot of 3rd and 4th stringers who aren't even in the league anymore because they don't have the talent to make it. Right now there isn't anything to doubt the confidence of our coaching staff with the receivers we have out there now. Stevie is Stevie. Robert Woods has done some good things and he is only a rookie. I like Graham also. Three games in, and I don't see the receiving core being a pressing issue. I think we have other things that we have to focus on getting better....like experience at the QB position to put the ball in a place where the receivers can catch it, and a secondary that is healthy and doesn't give up bunches of third and longs every game, and big play after big play.
-
Are we really going to have a discussion 3 games into the season as to how bad this team has to be in order for us to bail on our current coach and players a year or year and a half down the road? I want to see the team continue to grow and get healthy. Concern grows when games stop becoming entertaining and blowouts occur week after week and we start to digress. But why go there? We've done some good things so far this year and I expect us to continue to grow on that...as does the Bills mgmt, coaches and players. We are finally grooming playmakers in each side of the ball! I'm enjoying the ride. Just think....we might be onto something. Just....maybe.... GO BILLS!

Hacketts scheme is a major issue!
dezertbill replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This post hits it right on the head. Not sure why Manuel wasn't rolled out more. They kept him in the pocket, and it seemed to start chipping away at his confidence. I saw plays where he had a boatload of time, then gets sacked or runs for a yard or two. Bubble screens or short in routes would have helped. Also it seems the Spiller read option up the middle isn't working at all. Its pretty predictable, and doesn't fool anyone. I know that Manuel is young, but they have to start opening up the playbook and being more creative with Spiller AND Manuel. Jets have a tough defense, and Rex Ryan is no slouch. Have to find ways to get the ball to Spiller in space, move Manuel out of the pocket to make him the true duel threat he can be.
