  1. Point is he played well enough in the second half for that blown call to be meaningful. Goodell needs to send a memo to the refs, if it's a close call keep the flag in your pocket
  2. That call doesn't happen we win period. Not making any sort of grand statement about rest of game or whether they deserved to win
  3. From every angle I saw Robey barely touched the guy. Maybe I missed something. That was 3rd down right??? Good job refs ruining a nice 2nd half effort by Bills
  4. If Jacksonville is smart they should consider throwing some stunts at Urbik and CK to take advantage of their not working together. I actually think CK will hold up ok.. he looked fairly solid right up until the last drive of the game against the Bengals. I'm more worried about Urbik... He looked really rough the last game he started. I don't know how much more Urbik has in the tank
  5. I do an analysis every week looking at the All 22 on O LIne pass protect.. and in general Wood has looked very solid in pass protect this year. ( he was generally awful last year.. but seems much improved this year). He had some trouble picking up stunts in the Colts game but has seemed to work that out with his guards since then. I can't speak for his run blocking.. but here are the general comments I had on each game of his so far regarding his pass protection COLTS - shaky PATRIOTS - avg DOLPHINS - very good, breakout game GIANTS - solid TITANS - solid BENGALS - solid
  6. He didn't totally stink out loud. He had a few stinky moments.. and a few moments that smelled great. Tyrod generally smells better though.
  7. Once in a while you can get shown the light.. in the strangest of places if you look at it right..
  8. Thank you..I'm glad this sort of analysis seems to be of interest to some here
  9. Especially when Percy Harvin is out ... Now. that being said... the pistol could be effective.. but only if they do enough read/option stuff for it to have an effect.. and only if the QB occasionally keeps it to keep the D honest.
  10. Good point... his timing and footwork is much better when he is under center. I would say I noticed the same goes for Tyrod as well. It seems to be really hard to sync up footwork/ timing when out of the shotgun or pistol.
  11. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How the QB did on every pass play ( I may have missed a snap or two here.. there also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) DISCLAIMER ( I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS – 44 snaps – way too many …( last week was 38). The winning formula for this team is 30 or less pass attempts per game. LINE BREAKDOWNS – 6/ 44 snaps -or 14% ( improvement from last week10/ 38 snaps or 26% ) SUFFICIENT PROTECTION – 38 / 44 snaps or 86% ( last week 28/38 snaps or 74%) UNFORCED QB ERRORS: - 10/44 snaps or 23% - which is worse than last week ( 4/38 snaps or 11% ) or in other words EJ had time to throw but missed his target or made wrong decision on 23% of these opportunities Bottom Line: O-LINE VERY SOLID.. EXCEPT FOR END OF THE GAME– Overall the O Line pass blocking was very stout against the Bengals. Out of the 6 line breakdowns.. 4 of them came at the end of the game where we were in obvious passing situations. EJ generally had time to hit the back of his drop and look to his 1st or 2nd read. KOUANDJIOU FILLS IN NICELY - CK did a generally solid job filling in for the injured Henderson. If you recall… Henderson had really poor outing against the Titans last week.. so it may have been a blessing in disguise for him to get injured early in this game and have CK come in. He certainly wasn’t dominant.. however.. he was stout enough in pass protect up until the 4th quarter where he slipped and was beaten a few times. Overall.. he was an improvement from Henderson and I hope he sticks in the starting lineup even if Henderson heals quickly. EJ BEING EJ: Up and Down. The O Line generally gave him time to throw. On the positive side.. EJ showed progress by generally stepping up into the pocket to avoid the rush rather than frequently doing the old spin move and turning his back on the play to avoid the rush( which he still did once or twice.. but in general he stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush). He also looked much more confident running the ball and made some good decisions to tuck and run. One series EJ would look competent.. the next series he would be out of rhythm and off target. For example.. he looked fantastic on the last drive of the 1st half.. displaying good timing and footwork in taking 3 step drops and hitting Watkins and Woods in rhythm on hitch routes. Then .. on the first series of Q3 he comes in and has 3 unforced errors on one drive ( throwing behind Clay, unnecessarily checking down to McCoy when he has a wide open Hogan, and overthrowing Hogan on a deep route). His decision making was generally sound.. however.. the BIG DIFFERENCE between EJ and Taylor is accuracy. Tyrod generally does a nice job of leading his receivers and putting touch on the ball. EJ generally does a poor job of leading his receivers and quite often puts too much zip on dump down passes. PLAYS OF NOTE Q1;14:24 – UNFORCED ERROR - low throw to Clay on crossing route.. Q1: 6:27- Good coverage by CB on awkward looking deep out miss to Watkins… really no one else open on this play Q1:- UNFORCED ERROR - has time.. throws fly route to Woods out of bounds Q1:2:38 – UNFORCED ERROR - Interception to Hogan… good protection… bad underthrow Q2:12:47 – UNFORCED ERROR – Intentional Grounding – good initial protection.. EJ could have hit Goodwin on an out route but he doesn’t see him.. instead he does spin escape move and tries to throw it away Q2:9:43 – Glenn beaten to the outside – EJ pressured and underthrows Clay Q2:7:06- UNFORCED ERROR – High throw to Clay on rollout – no pressure.. just an unforced inaccurate throw Q2: 5:19 - Nice 3 step drop out route completion to Watkins in rhythm Q2:2:38- Another nice 3 step drop hitch route completion to Woods Q2: 2:00- 3rd straight nice hitch route completion to Watkins Q2: 1:02 – Coverage sack.. good decision on EJ’s part Q2: - TD Throw to Watkins - wasn’t as bad of a throw as it seemed on live TV Q3: 1:11 – UNFORCED ERROR – off target throw behind Clay Q4: 9:09 – UNFORCED ERROR – unnecessary dump to McCoy.. had an open Hogan on hitch route Q4:7:47 – UNFORCED ERROR - overthrows Hogan deep, has time to throw Q4: 7:19 – Kouandjio pushed back into EJ’s face.. EJ has to scramble Q4:2:16 – Both Glenn and Miller beaten.. EJ takes a hit but makes a good throw to Gragg Q4: 2:07 – Kouandjio beaten on inside move… gives up sack on EJ Q4: 2:00 – UNFORCED ERROR – EJ throws dump off pass too hard to Clay who drops it.. not enough touch on the throw Q4:1:00- Holding on John Miller – too late picking up a stunt to the inside… holds to prevent lineman from hitting EJ Q4: 51 – Glenn beaten around the outside forcing EJ off of his spot SUMMARY – The o-line was not the problem in the passing game today. It was a mix of the up and downs of EJ and a generally good job of Bengal DBs being tight in coverage. Taking a second look at the All 22 Coaches Film.. the Bengals dbs had pretty tight coverage most of the game .. with the Bills receivers generally having a tough time getting separation. If Tyrod is healthy and can get this type of protection from the O Line against the Jags the Bills should be in good shape ( assuming he has healthy receivers to throw to). O Line Pass block grades GLENN – C INCOGNITO – A- WOOD – B+ MILLER – C KOUANDJIO - C+ HENDERSON – n/a
  12. that's why I started this type of review .. When the board was crushing EJ last year without any sort of Objective analysis I really needed to dig deeper to see how much of the fault was on him and how much was on the o line. If EJ starts this week it will be really interesting to look at the All 22 next week. If we can get any sort of running game going I think he'll be ok
  13. Good observations.. I sometimes focus too much on the oline and miss other subtleties so thank you for the additional insight on those plays. I got 38 passing downs or snaps.. Which means the Bills appeared to drop back to pass 38 times. This counts all snaps where there were penalties, scrambles, sacks etc. .. Not sure why my 38 and your 32 are so far off... I got a feeling if Henderson answered that question honestly he'd say he was thinking about what club to hit up after the game or the nice big bong hit he had waiting at home for him
  14. To 3rd and 12 and Coach Tuesday's points .. Maybe one of the reasons Henderson hasn't been benched is that Kromer's fill-in OL coach may not feel confident enough in his temporary role to lobby for a high profile change like that. Hopefully either Roman steps in and makes the change this week to Kujo.. Or at the very least Kromer makes that call as soon as he gets back Regarding CK stepping in for Glenn.. I recall his only real error was the dumb false start which was probably jitters.. But he held up very well in pass protection for the few snaps he was in there
  15. For the most part I don't know the calls/ routes( see disclaimer in beginning of post) .. None of us fans/analysts do.. All I can do is watch the All 22 and see who is open and who isn't and then make an educated guess as to what Tyrod should have done. At least it's a more detailed opinion than making statements about how a qb/ o line did just watching the broadcast live. However on occasion it's blatantly obvious that a player runs a wrong route. For example.. In the Harvin play he and another receiver end up in the same spot and Taylor throws to the blank out route space where Harvin was clearly supposed to go to Yeah..if he is not solid in blocking then he is pretty much useless
  16. Ideally the bye week would be best.. but with EJ likely in there instead of Tyrod I don't think you can afford to have another week like that out of your RT. Henderson has set the bar so low .. I'm quite certain Kouandjio can at least be better than Henderson..even if he isn't 100% up to speed right now.
  17. Not sure how much Kromer's return can help in pass protect as I think the problem is more certain guys losing their one on one battles rather than a scheme thing. The OL has gotten better picking up stunts the last few weeks but guys like Henderson, Miller and Urbik have generally been beaten one on one too many times. Not sure if a good coach can shore up an O Lineman's technique that much mid season.
  18. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How Tyrod did on every pass play ( I may have missed a snap or two here.. there also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) DISCLAIMER ( I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS – 38 snaps – ( last week was 49 snaps… 38 is still too many ) LINE BREAKDOWNS – 10/ 38 snaps or 26% ( worse than last week which was 8/49 snaps .. or 16% ) SUFFICIENT PROTECTION – 28/38 snaps or 74% UNFORCED TYROD ERRORS: - 4/38 snaps or 11% ( worse than last week 3/49 snaps - 6%) or in other words Taylor had time to throw but missed his target or made wrong decision on 11% of these opportunities Bottom Line: LEFT SIDE O LINE OK/ RIGHT SIDE NOT SO GOOD– Overall, the line play was worse than last week vs. Giants….specifically the right side of the line. Tyrod made a few bad throws that were on him .. but there were too many O Line breakdowns against the Titans. HENDERSON WAS AWFUL- I’ve been doing this series for 2 years now.. and the performance by Seantrel Henderson against the Titans was the worst OT performance I have seen. Out of the 10 total line breakdowns.. he solely accounted for 6 of them. He was beaten 4 times, gave up a sack and had 2 bad penalties. He was not physically pushed back.. but was beaten both to the inside and outside on moves from the defender. None of these were stunts to my eye.. he was just straight up beaten one on one several times. If he is not injured.. then Kouandjiou should start Week 6 against Bengals. He played bad enough to get benched IMO. TYROD OFF A LITTLE - The failed first series was on Tyrod as his first 2 throws were off target for no good reason. He is starting to show a trend of misfiring on passes in the flat which is a little disturbing. That being said…he had bad luck on a couple of throws (legit holding call on Henderson in q4 wiped out a first down throw, Woods slipped on a well thrown hitch route and missed the ball, Harvin obviously ran the wrong route Q1) and his bomb to Hogan was absolutely beautiful. MILLER’S RETURN – Other than giving up one sack in Q4.. Miller looked solid in pass protect most of the day. PLAYS OF NOTE Q1-10:40 - UNFORCED ERROR – Tyrod throws screen pass at Clay’s feet Q1-9:59 - UNFORCED ERROR – Tyrod misses Harvin on a slant Q1 7:04 – Harvin runs wrong route Q2-5:17- SACK – Henderson beat to the outside Q2- 2:00 – Henderson beat to the inside, Tyrod has to move out of pocket Q2-1:24- UNFORCED ERROR – Taylor misses Harvin on deep sideline.. poor choice.. had Clay open over middle..never moved on from first read Q2-1:18- Henderson beat to the inside Q2-1:00- Robert Woods slips on well thrown hitch.. misses ball Q3-13:16 – SACK – Mulligan beat to the outside Q3-12:30 – Holding on Glenn ( legit call) Q3-11:34 – Henderson beat to the outside, gives up hit on Taylor Q4- UNFORCED ERROR – Taylor overthrows wide open Harvin on out route Q4-8:54 – Holding on Henderson ( legit call) wipes out throw for 1st down to Woods Q4- 8:35 – False Start on Henderson Q4-7:38 – Plenty of time, beautiful bomb to Hogan Q4:2:00 – SACK - Miller beaten on rollout play.. SUMMARY – Henderson’s performance in pass protect really sabotaged what was an overall decent showing by the rest of the line as far as pass protect goes ( I can’t comment on the run blocking .. but I suspect it was poor). The Titans did a lot of delayed blitzing… and effectively blitzed guys from the secondary several times.. however.. I didn’t see too many stunts.. the pass rushes seemed pretty straight up for the most part. Taylor’s unforced off target throws hurt in the first half.. but like the Patriots and Giants games he rallied in the second half and played much better to close out the game. I really hope they give Kouandjio a shot at RT this week against the Bengals… He looked good in his short spot duty filling in for Glenn against the Giants and he has to be better than Henderson at this point. 19. N'Awlins is a great town. If you happen to stumble by a little hole in the wall near Pat O'Brians cslled Yo Mama's .. Stop in.. Great jukebox and good service
  20. The Giants really looked prepared for this game. They certainly didn't look like they were caught off guard by any of the read option stuff. I recall one play read option play where the Giant edge defender read it perfectly ..forcing Taylor to keep the ball and run it inside for little to no gain. I also remember a Giant edge defender hitting Tyrod and making him pay after a read option handoff ( .. which some thought should have been Unnecessary Roughness.. but if the QB appears to be carrying out a fake after handing it off he is free game) They definitely could have won the game.. A lot of people were comparing this game to the Patriots game but really the only similarity was that the Giants had the same quick throw strategy that the Pats did. The Pats game was really a blowout.. this one was always a 2 score game and take away some of the penalties and poor play calling and we are right in it.
  21. Wood was ok in the pass protect game.. he and Incognito messed up a stunt once.. but other than that we was fine in pass protect. I don't get into grading the O Line in the running game. ... too difficult for me to tell what was supposed to happen and what really happened. It is quite possible ( and maybe even likely based on the run game results) that Wood was really bad in run blocking against the Giants.. perhaps that is why Bill from NYC gave him a bad grade. Having healthy Sammy and McCoy back will hopefully loosen up some of the coverages. For a variety of reasons I don't review the run blocking. This weekly write up is based strictly on pass protection. Regarding Taylor.. quite frequently the short throws were the only open throws available to him.. the Giants DBs really did a solid job in coverage. Based on what I saw Tyrod consistently attacked the intermediate and deep routes during the game ( maybe even forcing a few deep balls to guys who were blanket covered.. which isn't necessarily a bad thing if the ball is thrown where it can't be picked off .. possibly drawing a PI penalty). Regarding the bad throws.. .I only saw 2 or 3 bad throws where his mechanics were bad and he was off target for no good reason. The interception to Clay was a well thrown ball that was 50/50. There was a deep out throw on the run to Woods in the first half that hit him in the hands but the DB knocked it away. I agree that the run game must have been the problem.. I will leave that up to BIll in NYC or someone else to comment on why the run game was so ineffective
  22. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How Tyrod did on every pass play ( I may have missed a snap or two here.. there also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) DISCLAIMER ( I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS – 49 snaps – ( way to many.. last week was 29 snaps ) LINE BREAKDOWNS – 8/49 snaps .. or 16% ( more than last week percentage of 10% ) SUFFICIENT PROTECTION - 41/49 snaps … or 84% ( slightly worse than last week’s 26/29 snaps 90% ). UNFORCED TYROD ERRORS: - 3/49 snaps - 6% or in other words Taylor had time to throw but missed his target or made wrong decision on 6% of these opportunites( last week was 2 unforced errors or 7%) Bottom Line: OLINE PASS PROTECT WAS OK – TAYLOR MADE GOOD DECISIONS - Upon further review, the O Line held up reasonably well on pass protect and Taylor made very few poor decisions/ bad throws. Credit to the Giants DBs who had tight coverage on Bills receivers.. looking at the All 22 I saw very few instances where Tyrod was not seeing wide open receivers and passing them over. Tyrod also escaped a few sacks that most Qbs would not be able to avoid. I’m thinking that the Bills’ struggles in the first half offensively were mainly caused by 2 things.. Lack of running game.. Giants sniffing out designed scripted short passing plays. URBIK LOOKS BAD - Urbik started the game out well.. picking up a stunt… however..after that it was downhill. Of the 8 line breakdowns.. Urbik had 6 of them. He is very slow off the snap nowadays and very susceptible to misdirection moves from D Lineman. This RG spot is really the only weak spot on the line.. hopefully Miller comes back and regains his preseason form. KOUANDJIO - CK did a respectable job filling in for Glenn while he was out due to injury. He held his ground and did his job. The only frustrating thing was the bone headed false start on the 4th down where the Bills were clearly trying to goad NYG D to jump offsides. PLAYS OF NOTE Q1-5:28 – Good protection, nobody open, good throw away by Taylor Q1-4:55 – Urbik does great job picking up stunt Q1-:18 - Urbik beat to inside, Taylor flushed has to throw ball away Q2-5:05 – Crap offensive PI call on Clay Q2 - :25 - Inexcusable false start call on Kouandjio on 4th down Q3 -11:25 – Urbik holds, still gets beat, Tyrod forced to scramble Q3 – 8:19 – UNFORCED ERROR – Taylor bad throw at Clay’s feet on designed rollout Q3-8:13 – Taylor has time, great deep throw to Clay for first down Q3-5:51 – Taylor has time, throws deep to Harvin.. PI call Q3-5:45- Urbik beat again, Taylor scrambles for Touchdown.. questionable holding call brings it back Q3 -5:33 – Urbik beat again, Taylor forces ball to Clay.. almost picked off Q4 – 9:46 – Urbik beaten , Taylor steps up.. throws TD pass to Karlos Q4 -7:11 – Incognito/Wood miss stunt Q4 – 2:49 – SACK – Henderson beat to the inside Q4 - UNFORCED ERROR – Taylor has time, just misses Harvin deep Q4- SACK – Incognito beat on spin move.. caught holding to make up for it but still gives up sack Q4 – 4:57 - CHOP BLOCK on Incognito nullifies TD throw ( crap call) Q4 – 4:29 – UNFORCED ERROR – Tyrod underthows out route to Harvin Q4 - :20 – Urbik beaten, sack SUMMARY - The O Line was generally competent and Taylor’s pocket presence and decision making were generally sound today. Not having a run game really killed us and also credit to the Giants D and in particular their secondary who had tight coverage most of the day. One thing I did notice was that Taylor seemed to be under center much more in the 2nd half and this seemed to help his footwork and timing making throws. Hopefully this was noticed by the staff and we will see more of him under center going forward. O Line Pass block grades GLENN - B KOUANDJIO – B- INCOGNITO – B- WOOD - B URBIK – D- HENDERSON - C
  23. The Bills D was on the ropes a bit in the 1st half but they had a few big stops in the 2nd half to keep the game in reach. They had one major breakdown on the Jennings screen TD .. but they were on the field for a loongg time at that point in the game as the offense had hung em out to dry up to that point so I'm sure fatigue was starting to set in. Take away the ticky tack Urbik holding call on Tyrod's 2nd half TD scramble.. and take away the crap chop block penalty on the TD pass to Charles Clay and we would be saying the defense did enough to win.
