Tyrod picks apart prevent D with underneath passes and gets to 2014 Bills 35 yd line. 4th and 2 ... 10 seconds left.. one timeout. Tyrod goes play action deep to Sammy for game ending TD throw.
  2. Our last 3 MNF games were all stressful heartbreakers.. don't know if I can take another one. 38. Oct. 8, 2007: Cowboys 25 at Bills 24 (L) - I remember laying on the ground on my stomach devastated after Nick Folk? hit that kick 39. Nov. 17, 2008: Browns 29 at Bills 27 (L) - I believe Brady Quinn beat us in this one... wish I could burn this game from my brain 40. Sep. 14, 2009: Bills 24 at Patriots 25 (L) - Leodis.. Leodis.. Leodis...
  3. I'm glad some people find this write-up useful.. thank you. And yes... the call goes out to someone to write a weekly run blocking analysis!!!!
  4. Hah.. I agree. I love the run game.. I just don't know how I could do any sort of analysis on it effectively. Much easier to grade pass protect I think.
  5. I think his height ( or lack thereof) is an impediment to this type of development. A taller QB can buy an extra half second or so because he doesn't need throwing lanes as much as a shorter QB. I think this forces TT to have to move out of the pocket a little earlier than desired.. good thing is that he is very accurate on throwing on the run.. bad news is that the called play doesn't have time to develop as much. This is really the only thing that worries me about his ceiling. He has plus accuracy, plus arm strength, plus composure/leadership.. plus speed..
  6. Yes..that may be true.. but this analysis solely focuses on pass protect. .I don't evaluate run blocking
  7. Priority 1 - OLB/DE/ Joker Terrell Suggs kind of pass rusher. Hughes is that type of guy.. but Mario is not a good fit for that role. If we get a good one who can start right way.. maybe we kick Mario inside or trade or cut him to save cap space. Priority 2 - LT - I'm pretty sure they are not going to pay Cordy Glenn.. and I'm not comfortable putting Kujo or Henderson on the left side as a starter 3 - ILB - Bradham has slipped this year and Rex' scheme calls for a stable of stud/versatile linebackers. If Bradham asks for a big contract I would say " see ya" and draft his replacement 4 - Blocking TE - Mulligan is a disaster... 5 - CB.. can never have enough CBs.. McKelvin and Graham are getting old 6- Safety - McKelvin and Graham are getting old ( yes .. repeat..they are hybrids in my mind) and who knows if Aaron Williams will play again with his neck issue 7 - Center - Wood has played better this year but he is getting older..
  8. If you can find a couple of examples I am certainly open to taking a second look.. I am by no means perfect. I would respectfully disagree with the headset point.. every second you are distracted by not being able to hear the play call and get your guys in the right spot is a pre-snap second that you cannot focus on reading the defense / audibling.. etc..
  9. Yeah..I need to remind myself that there are 2 separate facets to being a good O Lineman..not just pass protect. From the naked eye just watching the game in real time.. Miller and Henderson seem to have been run blocking really well all year.. which is probably why they weren't benched after the rough pass protect start they both had in the first several games
  10. Yes.. earlier in the year both Miller and Henderson had several games where their performance was far below acceptable. I think the time off helped them both and they have been solid the last 2 weeks in pass protect. I have seen fewer mental errors (ie.. not picking up stunts) the past few weeks so certainly having Kromer back is not a bad thing.
  11. To my eye. .Taylor did a very good job identifying and picking up the blitz pre-snap. There were multiple occasions where he called in receivers/RBs in from the edges to help protect. I don't really recall any plays where the Jets had more guys blitzing than what the Bills had in to protect. Now..on some of those plays there were individual breakdowns ( Incognito.. Mulligan ). As far as hot reads..I do recall Sammy dropping what appeared to be a hot read throw. This is a good fact that I didn't point out in my write-up. Taylor had zero turnovers and was dealing with headset issues and a team that routinely blitzes 7 guys .. that is encouraging.
  12. Can't tell you exactly how long .. but protection was very solid on that one.. that was a great play call, great throw, great protection. I should have included that as a positive play of note ...
  13. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How the QB did on every pass play ( I may have missed a snap or two here.. there also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) DISCLAIMER ( I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS: 33 snaps ( more than last weeks 21 snaps). As the Bills were very close to losing this one.. I would repeat what I said last week.. Less than 30 pass plays/game is what this team should aim for. More than 30 and most likely it will be a razor close win or a loss. LINE BREAKDOWNS: 5/33 or 16% ( better than last weeks 5 / 21 snaps or 24% .. ) .. However.. there were quite a few screen passes, quick outs here. SUFFICIENT PROTECTION: 28 out of 33 snaps UNFORCED QB ERRORS: - 2/ 33 snaps or 6%.. or in other words Tyrod made good decisions/throws on 94% of pass plays. ( last week was 1 / 21 - or 5%.. so about the same as last week). Bottom Line: SACKS WERE NOT ALL ON O LINE: Two of the sacks were not due to poor protection.. but rather a combination of poor play calling and smart play by the Jets Wilkerson. In Q1 Roman called a play where the lineman pulled left.. TT faked left .. and then TT tried to rollout to the right but Wilkerson stayed home and got the sack. Pretty much the same play was called in q3 with the same result.. Wilkerson stays home and chases down Taylor for a sack. MULLIGAN AWFUL IN PASS PROTECT: Mulligan must be one hell of a run blocker.. because he really cant catch too well and his pass protect his awful. Roman tried to help his QB out several times by keeping a TE in tight for max protect... problem is.. Mulligan was the TE. He was beaten to the outside in Q2 .. resulting in a sack. He was also beaten to the outside in Q4 resulting in a crushing hit on TT. INCOGNITO ROUGH DAY: Incognito has been generally fantastic in pass protect.. but in the last 2 weeks he's slipped a little. He was beaten several times against the Jets in the first half. In Q1 he correctly identified the right guy to block on a 7 man blitz.. unfortunately that player bowled him over and TT was forced to scramble. Later in Q1 he was pulling to the right and both he and McCoy missed their guys resulting in a sack. He was also called for holding. He settled down later.. but he had a bit of a rough first half. YOUNG GUYS DO WELL: Henderson and Miller looked solid with no glaring errors that I noticed. TYROD SHAKY GOOD: TT appeared to make very good decisions on the majority of passing snaps for the 2nd week in a row. There were some moments where I felt he abandoned the pocket too early and I was ready to chalk him up for an unforced error.. but he would prove me wrong by overcoming and making a good completion on the run. There was really only one play where he rushed his progressions and made the super easy throw whereas if he chooses to wait an extra second he could have chosen a better target. Overall.. he executed what was asked of him. Roman clearly called quite a few rollout easy one read plays against the Jets.. some of them worked.. some were sniffed out by the Jets. TT also appeared to do a good job of identifying when the blitz was coming and calling in receivers to block it up. PLAYS OF NOTE Q1: 14:29 Long ball to Sammy I watched and re-watched this one and I think TTs throw was where it needed to be but Sammy just jumped the gun a little. Q1: 13:25 - 7 man blitz Incognito gets bowled over by #96.. TT forced to scramble Q1:-9:40 7 man blitz everyone picks up a blitzer.. however.. no one open and TT scrambles Q1: 4:01 SACK - 7 man blitz .. .Incognito pulling .. both he and McCoy miss their blocks Q1: 1:17 Holding on Incognito Q1: :45 UNFORCED ERROR - TT rushes out throw to Sammy had Clay open over middle for deeper throw if he moves through progressions Q2:11:06 SACK - Wilkerson not biting on play fake sacks TT Q2: 5:55 Sammy drops pass Q2 4:13- SACK - Mulligan beaten to the outside Q3 10:23- SACK - Wilkerson sniffs out naked bootleg again.. Shame on Roman for calling that play again.. also WILKERSON IS A FREAK OF NATURE.. no way a man that big should be that fast Q3: 8:50 Woods slips on good slant throw in red zone.. incomplete Q4 14:12 - Mulligan beaten again TT takes a nast hit but gets rid of it Q4 11:31 UNFORCED ERROR - TT short arms out throw to Woods. SUMMARY - The Jets D line is as advertised. Couple that with the balls out 7 man blitzes Bowles calls and I think any O Line would have difficulty. The good news is that the Bills generally had enough guys in to pick up these blitzes and it wasnt really the blitzing that hurt them as much as it was Roman's game plan. Roman was really trying to move the pocket and had quite a few misdirection pass plays called.. problem was.. the Jets didnt bite at all on any of these ( like the Dolphins did in week 3). These kind of calls led directly to sacks and overly conservative throws. I think if Roman would have changed the gameplan at halftime and played the Jets more straight up in pass protect ..the results would have been better. O Line Pass block grades GLENN A- INCOGNITO C- WOOD B MILLER B HENDERSON B
  14. I hear you.. This forum would be well served if people were more objective. Things are rarely black or white...lot of nuance involved when evaluating guys
  15. Yes circumstances were different..but not totally different as you say. For example .. Both Easley and Woods got open deep and caught long bombs against the Jags so it is hard to argue that having Harvin and Watkins out took away EJ's downfield options in that game (quite frankly EJ's looked great throwing deep in preseason and regular games so credit to him) Regarding the o line...based on my observations there was not much of a drop off ( arguably an inmprovement in Kujo's case) in having Urbik and Kujo in for that game. Regarding the run game... I will concede that having Karlos out in Jags game was a significant disadvantage for EJ. However.. My mainpoint was that EJ singlehandly sabotaged any chance of a dominant running game when he committed 3 unforced errors early in q2 that put the Bills down Multiple scores forcing them to throw the rest of the game. I would argue that the biggest reason EJ didn't have a run game to build off of was his own doing. Chicken before the egg in essence. At the end of the day I was not trying to throw EJ under the bus... But to not highlight the fact that in consecutive weeks one qb had 13 unforced errors and the other one only had 1 the next week would have been odd. That is an astounding difference. Again the keyword here is "unforced" errors.
  16. Based on the results of the running game I would not be surprised if Miller looked great in run blocking. I suppose coaches have to take the whole picture into account when looking at which linemen to start. It's entirely possible that some of these linemen who have graded out poorly in pass protect ( Miller, Henderson) have done very well in run blocking and that is a major factor in why they are in the lineup over others who may be better at pass protect.
  17. I don't think EJ is road kill.. someone else posted the "So EJ sucks" comment... not me. The point I was trying to make is that Tyrod has been the more polished/effective QB over EJ and I was backing my point up by comparing the amount of unforced errors each qb has committed with similar O-Line play ( I realize the O Lines had some different personnel when comparing games .. my point is that the O Line protected EJ fairly well in Jacksonville.. and that most of the issues he had in that game were not attributable to O line play). I do think that EJ has improved in several areas... his deep ball is much improved .. also .. his pocket presence has improved in the sense that he is stepping up in the pocket more rather than bailing out like he used to. However.. he still has major accuracy issues ( he has trouble leading receivers and allowing them to run after the catch) and his general demeanor on the field still seems a bit skittish and awkward.. whereas Tyrod appears to be very calm and collected.
  18. I think Evan Mathis signed with Denver got around $3 mil for 1 year.. So I think a 3 year deal at $3-4 mil per year would probably get it done. He has been damn near perfect so far this year .. Need to sign Glenn too. That's gonna cost a little more though...Time to trim some of that high paid D line to cover O expenses on 2016
  19. Glad you find it useful. I think efficient is the perfect word to describe Taylor's play. Stats are deceiving. A stat line of 191 yds and 2 TDs looks like a pedestrian day on it's face.. But it's the way he did it that was impressive. Him consistently hitting the deep throws is the definition of efficient.
  20. It seemed like a hold could've been called but since it wasn't I gave him the benefit of the doubt on that one..
  21. True .. The run game was much better against Miami which theoretically should have helped Tyrod. However.. I would point out several things. Number 1 - I think the O line pass protection was actually slightly worse in the Miami game..in other words EJ and Tyrod had relatively equal pass protect play from their o line in back to back weeks and Tyrod only had 1 unforced error. Nimber 2- The Bills never really had a chance to run the ball against Jags as EJ had 3 or 4 unforced errors in a row in Q2 putting the tesm fown by multiple scores and the Bills were forced to abandon the run. 13 of EJ's mistakes were not attributable to the o line
  22. Hah... just trying to be a gentleman Not sure if it's the new coach.. new scheme.. but Suh was a totally different player in game 2 than he was in game 1. I don't even think he had a single pressure in game 1... he was definitely a raging beast this time around.
  23. Well... Tyrod certainly does more with the same O Line than EJ does...
  24. Yeah.. he was pretty much one on one with Suh all day. I also forgot to mention that LeSean McCoy was EXCELLENT in pass protect. This is a facet of his game that I was not sure of.. but he really proved himself today.
