Maryland posters...can we get a Ravens scouting report?
Bocephuz replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've lived in Baltimore for about 18 years now (originally from Wellsville, NY) and keep an eye on them as most of my friends.. co-workers are Ravens fans. I am actually going to the game wearing my Darryl Talley jersey.. so hopefully I don't get into any fights. Here are my impressions: OVERALL: Most of the Ravens fans I talk to have low expectations for them this year... I myself am on the fence regarding the Ravens. When you have a franchise QB like Flacco you always have a shot QB: Joe Flacco He's coming off ACL surgery and only played a few minutes in one pre-season game so he will most likely be rusty for Week 1 vs. Bills. He is streaky and will make the occasional bone headed throw and occasionally take risks he shouldn't .. but when he is hot (and gets some time) he is elite and can particularly kill you with his deep ball. Bottom Line: Flacco will most likely be shaking off the rust for this game .. hopefully WR: STEVE SMITH - like Flacco he will be coming off a serious Achilles injury from last year.. and at age 37 chances are he will be shaking off some rust as well. Flacco does love him though.. and if for some reason they both come out on fire Steve Smith will be a problem. Bottom Line: I can't see Smith tearing us up in this week 1 game.. too early in his comeback from injury MIKE WALLACE - One trick pony.. however.. that one trick (the deep ball) is something Joe Flacco excels at. Bottom Line: Rex needs to pay attention to Wallace and scheme his way to ensure he doesn't shake loose deep. If he does.. Flacco will find him and it will hurt the Bills KAMAR AIKEN - showed potential last year.. and is good all around receiver. Bottom Line: I think ether Gilmore or Darby can handle him RB ( West, Forsett, Allen?) Forsett will probably get most of the work between the 20's.. don't be surprised if Terrance West gets some goal line carries Bottom Line: All three RBs are decent and Marshall Yanda is still a road grader at RG .. so they have potential to run the ball on our TBD Run D TE: Gillmore, Williams Nothing notable about either of these guys..OL Ronnie Stanley - 1st RD rookie LT. Will probably be an upgrade over Eugene Monroe in pass protect.. but he doesn't seem to have the strength to be a good run blocker: Bottom Line: Rex should be running stunts toward Stanley frequently to test him and confuse the rookie John Urschel - probably the weak point of the O Line. He is smart (a math whiz) but can be beaten Jeremy Zuttah - nothing remarkable about Zuttah Marshal Yanda - arguably the best guard in the NFL.. he's nasty, smart and is a solid pass protector but is a freaking road grader in the run game. Expect the Ravens to run to the right side behind him most of the day Rick Wagner - he struggled last year .. but that may have been due to injuries. He was pretty solid the year before at RT so I would say TBD on him BOTTOM LINE: This O Line was horrendous in pass protect last year and the only material change has been Stanley at LT. Bills should be able to generate a pass rush .. especially if they attack the left side of the line and stay away from Yanda DL Timmy Jernigan - was serviceable..average last year Brandon Williams - don't really have an opinion Lawrence Guy - don't really have opinion Bottom Line: There is no Haloti Ngata or Siragusa on this line... LB Elvis Dumervil - an elite pass rusher if healthy. However.. like many other key Ravens he is coming off an injury so he may be rusty Zachary Orr - has looked really solid in pre-season. He looks to be a solid MLB CJ Mosely - very consistent, solid leader of the D Terrell Suggs - borderline HOFer... like Dumervil.. coming off serious injury so who knows how he will look Week 1 against Bills Bottom Line: Even with Dumervil and Suggs coming off injuries... this LB corp is very solid and will most likely cause some problems for the Bills O CB: Jimmy Smith - dependable vet .. but not to the level of Gilmore or Darby Shareece Wright - don't have an opinion.. but if I'm Greg Roman I'm having TT go after this guy S Eric Weddle - picking up Weddle in FA should really shore up the back end and prevent them from being burnt deep like they were last year. Ladarius Webb - has made a solid transition from CB to Safety Bottom Line: The Ravens have a solid back line now.. so TT needs to be careful and pick his spots. Both Webb and Weddle have good hands and are unlikely to drop anything coming their way PREDICTION Bills 24 - Ravens 13 I think the Ravens D will come to play and the Bills O will have to grind it out.. but I think more than likely we'll be able to get a decent pass rush on Flacco .. and he will be rusty and skittish enough to throw a few bad picks that will be enough to put us in a position to win. -
Bills currently have ~ $5 mil in cap room... If they feel he has some left in the tank and they can sign him for roughly what they pay Manny Lawson ($3.4 mil/ year) I'd say let's do it. One year deal to prove himself and then he can go back on the open market and get long term contract if he has a good year. - Can't count on Shaq to produce too much when he comes back considering demands of that position in this D and missing offseason - Alexander has looked solid rushing the passer but I don't know how he'll hold up setting the edge - Manny is good setting the edge... can't rush the passer - If either Manny or Alexander get hurt we're screwed - Bierman looks outmatched - Striker is too small Kruger has played the "joker" position in Baltimore and Cleveland so transitioning to Rex' D shouldn't take too much time
-
Makes me long for Kraig Urbik. Hopefully some old decent vet gets cut for salary dump and we can pick him up

Cardale body language/ pocket presence very Jim Kelly??
Bocephuz replied to Bocephuz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Upon 5th review..His drops were generally a little fast and not timed up with his WR's routes...But his natural instinct to stand tall and wait a half second at the end of his drop to compensate still made him hit most of his receivers in stride This is where coaching and time will help him -
Cardale body language/ pocket presence very Jim Kelly??
Bocephuz replied to Bocephuz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes. Even though he clearly has work to do he has naturally 'calm feet'. For example EJ's natural instinct was to spin away, turn his back on downfield and scramble .. Now.. I will say EJ seems to have this tendency coached out of him but he still has his naturally 'nervous feet' in the pocket and it throws his timing off and generally makes him look awkward. Thankfully both Tyrod and Cardale have 'calm feet' -

Thank you for the detail Yolo. Even though I hated watching the OS O in the games I watched last year (zzzz) It was clearly effective. Is there a chance Meyer will adapt to his personnel? Or will he just plow ahead HS style regardless? -
Cardale body language/ pocket presence very Jim Kelly??
Bocephuz replied to Bocephuz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good natural instincts are priceless. I would venture to say his natural game is more suited for the NFL pro style offense than the Old fashioned option high school offense Meyer ran. I watched a few Ohio State games last year and it was totally Friday Night Lights. 👍 -

Putting the future projections aside.. At the very least doesnt he physically resemble Kelly on the field? Am I way off base here? -

Bocephuz replied to Bocephuz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Just observing his general demeanor, throwing style and presence .. That's all. Clearly he is not as ready / polished as JK was in '83 -
Ok.. Before you flame away.. I'm not putting him in the HOF yet.. And Yes I know it is a 4th quarter preseason performance against scrubs. With my disclaimer out of the way..None of the Bills QBs in the last 20 years has remotely reminded me of #12 ... but Jones's body language/ style immediately did.. From the first time I saw his college tape. And Sat night confirmed Did he not pass the first glance test??. Consider he is new to taking snaps under center and not from the Gun all the time like he did in college. https://www.facebook.com/BuffaloBills/videos/10154202841985659/ OK ... Here are the specific Kellyisms: Classic over head throwing delivery ...check ( that throw to O' Leary over the middle was total Jim Kelly.. I've seen that throw to Andre Reed a hundred times... Watch and tell me otherwise?) Tall Calm Pocket Presence.. Check Situational Awareness..(run to sticks on 4th down)... check Cockiness... ( he yelled at Roman to change play on last drive) ... Check Insinct to step up into pocket rather than spin and scramble ... Check Rifle Arm... Check Big Tough Presence... Check Let me be clear... The best thing for him is to sit on the bench this year and learn the nuances of the pro game. I will go on the record here and now saying as long as he doesn't get ruined by having to play for any significant time in'16...move ahead in time and If TT gets injured at any time in '17.. Cardale will be a legit threat to steal TT's job sooner rather than later

Conklin and Decker were both gone by this point ( I likely would have taken either) It came down to a choice between Josh Doctson and Darron Lee for me and I decided to go defense... I also did some trading to move up to get the K and REader 19: R1P19 OLB DARRON LEE OHIO STATE 49: R2P18 S KARL JOSEPH WEST VIRGINIA 80: R3P17 DE BRONSON KAUFUSI BRIGHAM YOUNG 106: R4P8 QB CARDALE JONES OHIO STATE 139: R4P41 K ROBERTO AGUAYO FLORIDA STATE 143: R5P4 DT D.J. READER CLEMSON 218: R6P43 OT AVERY YOUNG AUBURN
-
this would make me happy
-
why not? can you elaborate? btw.. Ideally I would have liked to get one of the good RTs ( Conklin or Decker) but neither were available.
-
Used Fanspeak Composite board... made a trade to pick up K in RD 5 19: R1P19 -WR JOSH DOCTSON -TCU - The fact that we had an offer on the table for Percy Harvin for '16 tells me how desperately the front office wants a complimentary #2 to Sammy. 49: R2P18 - S KARL JOSEPH -WEST VIRGINIA - really wanted to go edge or LB here.. but he is arguably the highest ranked Safety on the board and with Aaaron Williams health in question and Corey Graham and a street FA currently at other safety spot seems like too good of a value to pass up 80: R3P17 - DE BRONSON KAUFUSI - BRIGHAM YOUNG - the more I read up on this guy the more I think he's a perfect fit for our 3-4 DE spot. Apparently his technique is already very polished so hopefully he can contribute right away 109: R4P11 - QB CARDALE JONES - OHIO STATE - before you crucify me.. hear me out here... maybe it's just the #12 he wears.. but in watching film of his demeanor, pocket presence and really strong arm I see a lot of Jim Kelly. Seriously... I think he's the only college QB I've looked at in the past 5 years or so that I've followed the draft closely that even resembles Kelly. Obviously.. he has a long way to go to learn the game.. but I think if he is available in RD 4 we have to pull the trigger. 139: R4P41 - DT D.J. READER - CLEMSON - May not be a 3 down guy.. but he should be able to 2 gap and clog up the middle well to free up the LBs 156: R5P17 - OLB SCOOBY WRIGHT - ARIZONA - at one point this guy was ranked as one of the top lbs. Injury and not the greatest combine numbers seem to have knocked his stock down. But if you watch the tape you see a guy who really knows his keys, trusts his instincts and is not afraid to get dirty and physical. Should be a solid smart 2 down run stuffer. 165: R5P26 - K ROBERTO AGUAYO - FLORIDA STATE - seems to be best kicker available in draft, would save us money and hopefully improvement over Carpenter 218: R6P43 - OT AVERY YOUNG - AUBURN - may not be starter material.. but with how poorly CK, SH and JM have done it can't hurt to have competition
-
Last I saw .. Correa was not on the Bills draft visits list... which seems rather odd as he appears to be a great fit
-
On Correa.. for some reason he seems to be ranked as a third rounder on a lot of boards .. but IMO he seems to be the most well rounded 3 down 3-4 OLB ( I don't count big guys like Shaq Lawson in this group). I think Correa is better than Fackrell and Jenkins .. but most boards have him ranked lower than those guys for some reason.
-
Made a few minor trades to get this group..but they were all reasonable .. Used the Fanspeak Composite Board 19: R1P19 OT JACK CONKLIN MICHIGAN STATE - Fits our scheme, fills big need, seems like a no brainer to me. 49: R2P18 OLB SU'A CRAVENS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - - good value in 2nd round.. .has been stout against run even though he's smaller so should be a 3 down LB. Considering we go against Gronk twice per year and Aaron William's health is questionable I think this pick makes sense 80: R3P17 OLB KAMALEI CORREA BOISE STATE - again.. seems like a good fit for Rex' scheme. Should be able to get some pass rush and big enough to be stout on the outside 92: R3P29 DE BRONSON KAUFUSI BRIGHAM YOUNG - another good fit for scheme... big enough to be stout on the outside DE position but small enough to still maneuver and be versatile. From what I've read he already has very good technique so he may be able to contribute right away 112: R4P14 CB CYRUS JONES ALABAMA - it's always good to draft corners.. seems adequate in coverage nothing special.. but he was electric as a punt returner and we were awful in the return game last year so hopefully he'd provide reliable depth at CB and would start as PR 139: R4P41 C GRAHAM GLASGOW MICHIGAN - seems like good fit to fill Urbik's swing C/G role. 166: R5P27 DT D.J. READER CLEMSON - big fat run stuffing 2 gapper.. would allow MD to move around more and get better matchups 218: R6P43 QB VERNON ADAMS OREGON - Tyrod 2.0

How confident are the Bills in RT Seantrel Henderson?
Bocephuz replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why not? I think the whole blind side thing is overrated. I also think that in Roman's offense the RT is paramount as he sets the tone for the run game. Maybe the LT is more valuable in some other schemes where the running game isn't as important (like Gilbride's or Mike Martz' schemes) and the OC tends to put the TEs out to receive but here in Buffalo with GR the RT seems to really be an anchor position to me.. and worth a first rounder ( assuming the RT is an elite prospect) -
How confident are the Bills in RT Seantrel Henderson?
Bocephuz replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Henderson may have had some success run blocking but (even when healthy) has shown very little in pass protect skills. That coupled with the risk of his health issues makes him a liability Kouandjio actually performed admirably in the time he got on the field .. but he must be awful in practice, or his knee is worse than thought.. or something.. but at this point he has to be considered a bust and a liability as he can't even lock down the #2 spot over a diseased Henderson. Mills was adequate in pass protect for the most part but I don't see him as starting caliber or any sort of reasonable long term solution (thus the 1 year deal) If either Conklin or Decker are available at #19 .. the decision to draft them is really a no brainer (unless either Carson Wentz or DeForest Buckner are available at 19). They are both great fits for a power run scheme and the depth of OT's in this draft really goes downhill after the top 4 or 5 guys. There are plenty of DTs and LBs to get in later rounds.. it would be a damn shame if we pass on one of these Tackles. Also.. Glenn signing long term is not a sure deal.. so having his potential replacement in the wings is a sound insurance policy. Any time I look at the most likely top defensive options available I have questions.. - Ragland - is he really a 3 down player? Is it worth drafting an ILB in round 1? - Floyd - Is he a jack of all trades and master of none? Is he big enough.. durable enough to set the edge and hold up? - Lee - Is he big enough to play linebacker .. or is he more of a hybrid safety? - Lawson - Is he a good fit for a 3-4 D? Can he drop into coverage? - Nkedemiche - Is he another Mario Williams personality wise? Is he a locker room cancer? - Butler /Chris Jones - The depth is so good at DT this year.. are either of these guys that much better than the other DTs that will be available later on like Willie Henry or DJ Reader? - Jarran Reed - Is a run stopping 3-4 DE worth a first round pick? When I look at Taylor and Decker I really don't have too many questions / issues. They are both good fits for our scheme and are in the top tier at their position. -
Used the Fanspeak updated board.... 19: R1P19 - OT JACK CONKLIN - MICHIGAN STATE - This pick makes too much sense..both Conklin and Decker profile as solid power run scheme RTs and we have a big hole on that side of the line 49: R2P18 - DT CHRIS JONES -MISSISSIPPI STATE - Size/measureable-wise has been compared to Mohammed Wilkerson. If he's half as good or half as versatile he'll be a good fit for Rex 80: R3P17 - OLB JORDAN JENKINS - GEORGIA - Profiles size/measureable/experience wise to Manny Lawson. Could be Manny's understudy as edge setter and possibly could be slightly better pass rusher than Manny 99: R4P1 - QB DAK PRESCOTT - MISSISSIPPI STATE - Was impressed watching him in the Senior Bowl where he got the ball out of his hands quickly/ decisively to the play makers. HIs footwork looked good to me and he is obviously very mobile. Not as big as Hackenberg or Jones.. but big enough at 6'2" and more importantly it seems like he processes the game faster than either of those two at this time. The DUI is a bummer .. but from all reports he has been a respected charismatic leader during his college career. Watch below if you haven't seen him at the Senior Bowl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbn90kJDJwM 139: R4P41 - K ROBERTO AGUAYO - FLORIDA STATE - We need a new kicker...we also need to clear some cap space... 156: R5P17 - CB JAMES BRADBERRY -SAMFORD - Best CB with size available. Tried to get Cyrus Jones earlier but just missed out on him. This guy seems like a decent press corner who is big enough to moonlight at Safety too 192: R6P17 - ILB ANTONIO MORRISON - FLORIDA - Apparently has a ton of off field issues and I'm not sure why we would have brought him in for a visit unless we were really interested. Assuming he interviewed well.. having the Bills take him here due to his pre draft visit 218: R6P43 - QB KEVIN HOGAN - STANFORD - Why not... best case scenario he looks better than Prescott/EJ in camp and becomes backup. Worst case.. we stash a guy on the practice squad that is very familiar with the Roman offense
-
Mills was generally solid in pass protect except for one bad game towards the end of the year ( can't remember which game it was exactly but I clearly remember him doing well for the most part except for one glaring bad day). In general he was more consistent than Henderson at pass protect. Can't speak for how well he did blocking the run game as I didn't really break down any NFL Rewind tape of any of our O Linemen doing run blocking. That being said.. I think we can do much better than Mills ( career journeyman), Henderson ( below avg pass protector with health issues) and Kouandjio ( no idea what happened to him .. he either flamed out or maybe his knee really is that messed up?) There appears to be a clear top tier of OTs in this draft (Tunsil, Stanley, Conklin, Decker) and if any of them are available at #19 the Bills should really think hard about taking one of them to solidfy the RT position. We also need to consider that signing Glenn to a long term deal is not a sure thing.. so if we can get someone who can play either LT or RT as insurance for Cordy leaving in 2017 would be wise.
