The main issue with recovering signing bonus money is that it has to be due to a voluntary retirement (and the contract details also matter). We saw what happened with Eric Wood. He had to make it clear that he was retiring because the physical toll he took from playing football would not allow him to play any longer. That’s a pretty simple thing to assert and in most cases it would be very difficult to disprove - especially where veteran players are concerned. On the team side they use roster bonuses to get injured players off their roster between seasons.

Five years is maximum proration period - that includes the current season. In the past there was also CBA language that limited the proration period to the end of the CBA if that was shorter. Not sure if the current CBA has that clause or not. The gamble was made when the original fully guaranteed contract was given. This is just a simple cap move.

It just ups the dead money when they part ways. That $7M will increase substantially. If Von is cut before the 2025 season I expect him to be designated a June 1st cut. That would push some dead cap to the following season. So yeah, if that happens he will be on the books for 5 total years - 3 seasons he plays plus 2 years with dead money.

I think a team making a move like that has to take a player with the potential for greatness. Stroud may hit or he may not, but you can’t do something like this for a Bryce Young. His ceiling is what? Kirk Cousins? Also I don’t think you have to move to 1 for Levi’s or Richardson. No one left for it to be but Stroud.

Von Miller has a guaranteed roster bonus of $13.345M due this month. It’s a simple measure to convert that to a signing bonus and spread it out over the next 5 seasons. That clears $10.676M this season.

Definitely the owners sending a message regarding lengthy, fully guaranteed contracts for QBs. Seems as though they’re trying to keep those guarantees to 3 years. That doesn’t necessarily mean there is any formal collusion though. Everyone knows that the vast majority of owners don’t want QBs to get that. It would bleed into other positions and eventually become part of negotiations - and it would be an obstacle to the less incredibly wealthy owners retaining top talent like franchise QBs. I am a little surprised that one of the wealthier owners isn’t going to use this opportunity to find their QB though.
