To all the Fire McDermott Posters, a follow up question..
BarleyNY replied to ChicagoRic's topic in The Stadium Wall
I agree that winning a SB is very difficult and that some luck is always involved. But that’s exactly why having a HC who is up to the task in the big moments is so important. He can’t choke them away. It’s too difficult and too much has to go your way to even have a chance. Coaches don’t get too many chances with that before they lose the confidence of their players. You have to be kidding me with the Marty S and Phillip Rivers comment. Rivers’ and Bernie Kosar’s careers were both wasted under Marty S. In San Diego his replacement, Norv Turner, was cut for the same mold and finished wasting Rivers’ useful years. I certainly believe we can do better than Turner. There’s no guarantee of hitting on any HC hire, but that doesn’t mean you keep one that you have to hope figures out how to win a big game. -
I think it’s easy to love a 4th round pick that has produced at the level Davis has - while he’s on his rookie contract. But the Bills haven’t extended him yet. I think next offseason he’ll find a team willing to pay him $10M AAV but I doubt it’ll be the Bills. And that’s okay if it plays out like that. We tip our hat to him for what he’s done here and he gets paid.

Is Sean McDermott our version of Doug Collins?
BarleyNY replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yup. Fans buying PSLs need to consider what will happen during down years - especially if they are prolonged. That would naturally lead to a poor secondary PSL market. STHs wishing to stop buying their season tickets would have to sell their PSLs at a deep discount or even give them back to the team for nothing. The worst case is more likely for the worst seats, which are usually owned by fans the least able to afford them in the first place. If the PSLs revert to the team then they can be resold in better times. In the meantime the team could sell them as single game seats. People obviously can spend their money as they see fit, but to me this seems a bit underhanded. It is a sneaky way for teams cash in even when they don’t put a good product on the field for awhile. People can respect the humanity of someone and not respect their ability to do their job. To equivocate the two aspects of a person is ridiculous. I’ve known some really good people that are terrible at their jobs. -

I’m sure the Pegulas want to win a SB, but they’re also businesspeople. They embraced the opportunity to make a SB run as well as use the associated fan fervor to get themselves a new stadium. It will be interesting to see how hard they go after a SB now that the stadium is in hand. -

Agreed. Which is why a HC can’t be the one to squander legitimate opportunities when they present themselves. 13 seconds is on McDermott and is the poison that will eventually kill his tenure here. It will take another year or two to finish the job, but I believe that (and the immediate aftermath) was the point of no return for him here. His failures in the moment and afterward changed how he was viewed and trusted by the locker room. Now it is too late to undo that damage and it just has to play out. -

I get very strong Marty Schottenheimer vibes from McDermott. Both are (or were) defensive minded HCs with the ability to turn around poor teams and mold them into excellent regular season squads. However neither could figure out how to win in the playoffs against the best teams and squandered the careers of excellent QBs. -
Will anyone admit to enjoying watching soap operas on TV?

TBD and the Bills covers that part of my life. -
Buddy of mine needed some large trees taken out. Was thinking of doing it himself. New homeowner at the time and didn’t have any knowledge, but decided to get a price on having someone else do it. The first guy that came out to quote him was missing an eye and several fingers. He just hired the company. Said it was either a job that was dangerous af or the company picked the right guy to come out and quote to scare people. Either way, not worth the chance.

Help me understand the Ken Dorsey hate
BarleyNY replied to Buffalo_Stampede's topic in The Stadium Wall
That is not what I said and I have no idea how that was your takeaway from my posts. I said that many posters refuse to criticize McDermott, Beane and Allen. Thus, Dorsey and others get the focus of the blame when things go wrong. I specifically said that while Dorsey did a good job for a rookie OC, the Bills situation called for a more seasoned OC. -

So you’re saying everything with the team has been so good that there’s nothing to criticize? Interesting. Seems to me some posters wont accept any criticism of any current player, coach or FO personnel regardless of what transpires. -

I agree with all of that. I think the Bills had a situation akin to this: Company exec expectedly moves on. Employee who was being groomed to take their place is hired. But there is a huge project that requires a great deal of expertise is just getting underway and this exec will be the lead on it. I’m sure everyone can see the potential for problems there. I will give the Bills brass credit on this front though. they put in place a lot of experience at the positional coach level. It would be interesting to see how that worked out. I’d have rather seen one highly respected and experienced voice guiding Dorsey than several positional coaches with more experience than him reporting to him. Not that the latter didn’t or couldn’t work, but the problems that can arise in that situation are pretty obvious. -

I’ll add that the blame for hiring a rookie OC lands at the feet of two of the three people that most TBD posters refuse to criticize. So it’s easier to just blame Dorsey rather than consider that mistakes are being made at a higher level. As for Dorsey, he probably has a bright future. He’s not there yet, but he did not do poorly for a rookie OC. I do question the relationship with Allen though. Mainly it is whether it allows for him to effectively coach Allen hard when needed. I should note that I see this issue with McDermott as well. He hasn’t reined in Allen when warranted either so why would Dorsey feel like he could do it? -
Is this year make or break for McDermott?

You’re not wrong. That was inexcusable. Certainly a fireable offense. -

I’m not sure that gets the plug pulled on them, but it might. -

A situation bad enough that he’d lose the locker room. -

The way that the contracts line up - both key players and McDermott/Beane’s I think they have two seasons. A catastrophe this year would accelerate it to after this season, but the way it looks planned out seems like they have two. -
That is a fair point. I’m not sure what Diggs wants at this point though. If it is to be traded, then it makes sense. Not saying that’s it, but things would line up - and it’s obviously happened before. Another possibility is that he came in ready to work and something happened that ticked him off badly enough that he walked out. Dunno. Might have to wait until he speaks on it.

I think he made it clear t the team during and after the playoff loss last season what he’s upset about. Lack of effort by many players and Dorsey. I honestly don’t know if he’s upset with Allen or not. Parting ways now would be very, very difficult. If traded his 2023 dead cap would be $13.2M which would gain the Bills $1.7M in space. But his 2024 dead cap would be $31.1M. Outright cutting him would only be marginally worse this season and the same next. LINK

Barkley hinting at sitting out the 2023 season.
BarleyNY replied to Gregg's topic in The Stadium Wall
You said “He'll sign the tender once he realizes the fines are piling up in camp”. I pointed out that your statement is incorrect because he can’t be fined until he is under contract - which he’s not. Also he can’t cost himself any other money in camp because the tag pays in game checks. As long as he signs just prior to week 1 he’ll get the full $10.1M. Same as if he signs it now. OTOH if he signs his tag now, he might cost himself some money as it helps his leverage while he can still negotiate a long term deal, which is a real possibility.
