  1. It would really depend on the vet player and their contract.
  2. Put yourself in the position of most NFL GMs and HCs. These guys are not winning a lot of games or keeping their jobs long if they do not find a quality QB. So they might as well go all out trying to get that kind of player. If they succeed then no one cares that they gave up a bunch of picks because the guy is worth it. If they don’t, then they’ve got a built in excuse for failure - we missed on our QB. I remember hearing a story of an NFL GM and an MLB GM taking shop. I’m going to get details of it, including names, wrong. But here’s the gist: The MLB GM thought NFL GMs were massively overvaluing QBs. The NFL GMs response was simply, “Imagine if you could have Greg Maddox pitch every day.” The reality is that an elite NFL QB is worth probably a lot more than they’re getting paid even these days. And even a chance at one is worth a tremendous amount of draft capital.
  3. I think that’s exactly wrong. This FO is too smart and has done too well overall to make the horrific mistake of falling in love with any single player. They were aggressive acquiring players to fill cornerstone positions, but it was about that and not having to have a specific player. We don’t even know if Allen was their #1 QB that year. And we will likely never know. I’ll tell you this though, in that draft it would have been very unlikely to have unanimous agreement in ranking QB prospects. They’ve done very well and probably got a little lucky too. Don’t overthink it.
  4. The fourth one looks like what we’d wear if the Bills and Texans had to merge teams. Also they are all terrible.
  5. People here should also understand what is usually meant by a “team friendly deal”. That typically means that a deal has: - relatively little guaranteed money - low early cap hits - exit clauses (aka non guaranteed roster bonuses) - below market value compensation - difficult to achieve performance clauses Not only do I think that Allen will get a close to market value contract, IMO it’d be wrong to ask him to take a lot less. If he’s your guy, then he’s your guy. Treat him like he is. That doesn’t mean that you can’t negotiate contract length, dollars and guarantees. That’s expected. But you can’t expect him to take a lot less than he deserves.
  6. Elite basketball players are in a totally different financial reality than even the best NFL QBs. Jordan made less than $100M playing basketball even though he had years with the highest salary in the NBA. It was so high that the record wasn’t broken for 15 years after. But he’s worth approximately $1.6B now. He didn’t get the vast majority of that from NBA contracts, he got it - billions of dollars of it - from Nike, Gatorade and other companies. So if you are Jordan or Lebron or the like it actually pays more to win and be thought of as a great than it does to make money directly from your NBA team. Rules in the NBA top out salaries now so it’s a pretty moot point, but I’d argue that Lebron would do better for himself financially if he played a few seasons for free and won a couple more championships than if he maxed his salary out on a garbage team. Even the best QBs don’t have that kind of advertising power. Sure, a lot of them make some money doing it, but what football player is making 20 times his NFL earnings from advertising?
  7. I’ve heard this too, but the second round is divided into halves and the first into thirds.
  8. FWIW I typically just look at the actual posts and don’t pay much attention to the name of the poster, much less their status on the board. There are a few exceptions, but those posters have earned that notice due to the quality of their content. And, no, I’m not naming names as some of them don’t need the attention.
  9. I’m not sure why that would be a problem or why Reed would be worth extending ourselves financially. He would be far from a cheap signing. He signed a 2 year, $23M contract with Seattle a year ago. He might not get that this time, but he will get a substantial contract. Also we have 5 DTs on the roster now - Star, Oliver, Butler, Zimmer and Phillips. I expect a draft pick as well. That doesn’t even include DEs that can drop inside on passing downs.
  10. Absolutely. A below market deal is something that a QB in the latter stages of his career MIGHT take AFTER he’s already made a ton of money and is chasing a ring on a salary cap strapped team. That’s about it. I love the “he’s such a great guy he’ll give up $10M a year” crowd! You all crack me up!
  11. Yup. Or just a high draft pick camp body to see if he can turn it around and look like he did in 2018. I looked at the PFF rating and that was a good season for him. He’s been terrible in his other 4 seasons. I doubt he’s getting more than vet minimum so even if signed it’s not like he can’t be cut.
  12. He was a second round pick in 2016 and no one knows who he is. That supports their opinion.
  13. It really doesn’t make sense to sign a FA this season to replace Star next season. I expect us to draft a player to develop this season and take over for him - probably next season.
  14. I agree. One thing that’s always in my mind with first round picks - especially ones later in the first - is second contracts. If you take a Shaq Lawson, which is to say a player that’s probably going to be good, but not great, then that’s a tough second contract for the drafting team to give. He’s almost certainly getting one, but from another team. With high ceiling/low floor guys like Oweh it’ll be an easy decision either way. If he flourishes, you pay him what’s expected on a first round pick’s second contract. If he doesn’t, then he’s gone in 3-4 years.
  15. Cruel, but fair
  16. I do not see Asante Samuel Jr either. CBs are in a very different order than I’ve seen. Maybe there’s a lot of disagreement on them in NFL circles. Could be a good value position in the first or second round. Also JOK at 45. Damn.
  17. Yeah. That’s a 180 from what had been expected. It looked like the NFL was going to make him sell. Nope. Wow. Just wow.
  18. CB2 because Wallace is on a one year deal and Jackson is a developmental player. I’m not saying the former couldn’t re-sign or the latter couldn’t develop, but many of us would prefer to see CB2 settled for the long term. Depth at CB is always a very good thing anyway. Also I agree on the need for a matchup player for TEs.
  19. On cut down day the whole roster counts so there needs to be some space for all 55 (53+2) spots, practice squad players and anyone signed to replace injured players. It does add up. The Bills definitely need the cap space the restructuring of the Tre and Dawkins contracts gives them. There’s really no downside to creating the space as any unspent space can be carried forward.
  20. No lie. There was an elderly guy involved with a local food club who made his own Jägermeister. He had me try it at a meeting. He’d already given me a taste of some of his rather delicious homemade charcuterie so I gave it a try. My immediate reaction was that I’d been poisoned. My body’s reaction to it later was that it had been poisoned. It was awful and almost certainly had higher level alcohols in it (which can be poisonous). He was so proud of it though. Unsurprisingly he passed away not long after that meeting. I blame the Jägermeister.
  21. WOW! I’m absolutely stunned. Even for the NFL that’s effed up.
  22. Agreed. Them taking a QB is my bet too. It’s that or they’re trading out with a team that will. Side note: The coaches and front office in Jersey aren’t consulting Corey Davis about whether or not to draft a QB this year.
  23. There’s been some speculation that Snyder will sell the team. If that’s true it would makes sense to hold off and allow the new owner to name the team.
  24. Couple points: - Beane has already used some of the avenues to create space to sign/re-sign players and maintain a proper cushion. Details haven’t come through Spotrac and OTC yet, but we’d be over our cap limit if Beane hadn’t already done so. - I don’t think anyone is saying anything about Beane going on a big spending spree. If he needed or really wanted to spend on a player, he could. This is what I said and Incidentally this is what Beane said in the article.
