I actually loved the signing. He was exactly the player the Bills defense needed. The team went all in and it didn’t work out. It happens. But I’m with you on hating that we had to go out and find an aging FA to give that contract to because we couldn’t draft well enough. So many resources poured into the DL with so little to show for it.

The Bills are completely screwed with Von Miller’s injury. Even healthy he would be painful to trade ($14.8M dead cap) and impossible to cut ($40.2M dead cap). Cap consequences aside we can’t cut an injured player without an agreed upon settlement - and that’s not happening. No team would even consider trading for a player with Von Miller’s injury and massive contract until that player shows he’s back to form. He will likely get back on the field at some point next season (see White, Tre), but he won’t be back to form until some time after that - if ever. And at his age the “if ever” is a very real possibility. He’ll be 34 this off-season. The Bills are going to take this one hard, right in the shorts. There’s your elephant in the room. Edited to add: Contract details here, see for yourself.

I think firing Dorsey and Frazier is a possibility this off-season, but this feels like it is heading toward a house cleaning. It won’t happen this off-season, but seats are going to start to get very warm.

Trade Diggs for assets and go to a more controlled ground game.
BarleyNY replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall
Very important to remember that a post 6/1 cut or trade only spreads the dead cap out over two seasons. The total dead cap is the same. In Diggs’ case a pre 6/1 trade would incur a dead cap of $37.6M in 2023. A post 6/1 trade would incur dead cap hits of $11.9M in 2023 plus $25.7M in 2024. -
Saffold said guys were "exhausted" this week and "out of gas"

I think the players on both sides of the ball got the Bengals best shot out of the gate and they knew they weren’t going to compete with that. Not with the game plans in place at least. That’s a demoralizing situation to be in. -
Is McDermott Really Marty Shottenheimer in Disguise?

I’m over this defensive scheme. Bring in a new DC.

I said the same thing when I saw that. “That’s fireable.” To make matters worse Edmunds was one of the blitzers. He’s as poor at blitzing as I’ve ever see a player be. Yet they blitzed him over and over with no success. -
In this case simply a group of coaches who can put together decent game plans in the post season would be an upgrade. For example, McDermott is a defensive coach and his Bills defenses in the playoffs have been atrocious against good offenses. That’s been consistent.
-
That’s a fair take. My issue is more that he’s probably the best out there and that I’ve lost faith in this group of coaches and FO personnel. It’s not so much getting Payton specifically. I just want an upgrade. Edit: And, yes, I know a full overhaul is not happening this off-season. Right now I’m venting.

Won a Super Bowl. Didn’t just make it there. I don’t care what his salary would be. Payton likely would elevate this offense and we’d see a change on the defensive side of the ball. He’d give this team a chance. Right now we’re sticking with a group that’s responsible for repeated awful defensive performances in the playoffs, a horrid offensive game plan for two straight playoff games this season and the 13 second debacle. So it is more that Payton is probably the best option out there right now and that’s way better than a group of coaches and FO personnel that I’ve lost faith in.

McDermott has certainly done very good things for the Bills overall. But he’s not a great coach yet. He has not earned that. Maybe he will grow into one, but the major issues with his teams - and HIS defenses in particular - in the playoffs keep him from reaching the “great coach” level.
-
No, I certainly don’t think it happens. Obviously it would be costly to Pegula, but he has the cash and coaching salaries don’t impact the team’s cap so it makes no difference to me. A very late round first (and more) to significantly upgrade HC for years to come is a no brainer.

Frazier deserves his share of the blame here, but this is McDermott’s defense. It’s not as simple as firing Frazier. If the next DC just runs McD’s scheme with McD’s players, it’ll have similar results. -
Replacing McDermott with a much better HC is as terrible as continuing to dump resources into a defense that collapses in the playoffs every season? I guess we have different concepts of what terrible ideas are. And what a great coach is.

McBeane's constant use of premium draft picks on role players
BarleyNY replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
This has been a gripe of mine too. Using 3 picks in the second and third rounds on stable RBs, a second on a back up DL in Basham, a first on Rousseau. Let me speak to the strategy I think was employed with the Rousseau pick. I see him as a solid complementary DE who only will be here through his fifth year option. That’s because he’s a first round pick at DE and the expected extension with his drafting team will be a lot higher than his value. Exceptions happen where the player take their MV with that team, but they’re rare. So this was a cost control move by the Bills. It cleared space for Von Miller so I get it, but it’s a short term, win now move at the expense of long term team building. A backup DL in the second round who will be here for no more than four seasons is even more egregious. Back to Rousseau. Late first round picks don’t have that high of a success rate - 1 in 3 get a second contract IIRC. It’s 1 in 2 for the whole first round. So again, I get it. But when you don’t have success in that early window, you screw yourselves long term. That seems to be the path we’re on. -

Or if it helped in the playoffs -
Thanks. I’d do this year’s first. I don’t think I’d do two firsts. If it’s this years first and another non-first round pick I’m having that conversation.

Sean Payton is under contract. What’s the expected compensation? Yes, he’s a much better coach than McD and I’d swap him out today. But that means blowing it all up in the FO too. Again, I’d be okay with that for Payton. I don’t see another available HC that I’d do it for tho.

The madness of blitzing while the CBs played 10 yards off of the WRs was only compounded by the stupidity of having Edmunds be one of the blitzers. That even happened in the red zone.

Coaching Staff & Other Thoughts On Falling Short in 2022
BarleyNY replied to pocoboy's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’m in favor of both Dorsey and Frazier being replaced because of their performances in the playoffs. But here’s the important thing - the new DC needs to have much more autonomy. Frazier is running McDermott’s defense with McD’s personnel. Changing out the DC won’t matter if the new guy has to do the same thing. -
That’s funny. A couple years ago I predicted that Allen would have an Elway career. Years of him gaining experience while we see years like this followed by new coaches and pieces around him before winning it all a couple times - all with the same team, of course.

No. It is $37.6M if we trade him. If we were to cut him it would be $45.4M in dead cap. Spotrac link -

And only $37.6M in dead cap…….plus the cost of his replacement. -

Funny how you didn’t mention that until after year 2.
