Cover 1 promoting an undersized 3T for draft
BarleyNY replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in The Stadium Wall
If it wasn’t at the expense of adding talent to an offense that really needs it, then it would be a different situation. Day 1 and 2 picks under this regime: DL - 2 Firsts, 2 Seconds, 1 Third (and a huge FA signing with Miller) LBs - 1 First, 1 Third DBs - 2 Firsts Day 1 & 2 picks on offense: QB - 1 First RB - 1 second, 2 Thirds WR - 1 First traded for Diggs, 1 Second TE - 1 Third OL - 1 Second, 1 Third In an offense driven league. -

First place at the quarter pole.

Frazier. And it’s not close. Ryan’s defense is not suited for today’s NFL. It wasn’t even suited for it when he was here almost a decade ago.
-
I feel the same way, but leave Yolo alone! He’s a good dude. And he’s been around.

I understand why you’d say that, but think about it from the viewpoint of a GM. Say you’ve built an excellent roster, but lack a quality QB - and you aren’t picking high enough to get a good QB prospect. Would you want to keep rolling along with the status quo where you’ll top out at mediocre? That will get you fired in a season or two. Or would you rather spend a bunch of your owner’s money and some draft picks on Lamar? If you make the move and it doesn’t work out and you get fired, then you won’t be there to clean up the mess of being stuck with a QB who isn’t living up to his contract, cap hell and no high picks. Personally you’re probably no worse off than not making the move for him. If it does work out, your team is successful, you’re the hero and you get a huge new contract. This is the reason some team will take the risk and go all in for Lamar.

Especially when those superior fans take time to come here and talk down to the other people on the board?

Stefon Diggs - “I watched the game five times”
BarleyNY replied to BillsFan619's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don’t think he’s to the point where he’s sure. If he was, then he’d already be asking to be traded. But I think he’s worried about the coaches and FO. He obviously loves his teammates, but he needs to see them care as much as he does. That means seeing the same effort and dedication from the other players and the staff. If he doesn’t think they are up to it, he will want to leave. -
Again. That is completely ridiculous for a variety of reasons: - look at what HOU could get for $10.75M on the FA market - quality players available early in the 3rd - 3rd round would be way cheaper - 3rd rounder would be under team control for 4 years instead of 1 like Oliver and could actually be there if they turn things around

Daboll/Hodgins - Does their success bother you?
BarleyNY replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’ve met Daboll. He seemed a like a good dude. His fiancée (now wife) was very nice too. Our daughters knew each other from soccer and she is a good kid too. Incidentally my friend’s son took her to prom last year. I saw the pictures. She really grew up to be beautiful. I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I have never met Hodgins or his family, but I have no problem seeing him do well. Good for him. Unless I know that someone is a bad person I don’t begrudge anyone their success. If I think they’re a good person, then I root for it. -
You can’t be serious about a third round pick. No chance in hell. A flip of proximate day three picks is more like it. Sadly, that is true. After all the picks and cap space they have spent on the DL, it’s still a need.
-
Agree that a healthy Miller is huge. That helped Oliver’s game. Well, he helped everyone’s game. Getting pressure consistently with four - or even three at times - is huge for defenses. That can be the best way to slow down great QBs.
-
So what’s your plan? If the Bills cut him they still have to pay him. His salary would still count against the cap. See below for an unlikely possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. Other than trading him during the season to a desperate team, your scenario really is the only other possibility. Maybe a team like Chicago would flip late round picks and take him. The real risk in that course of action is that Oliver would have to know that we are trying to trade him because his agent would have to work out that new contract. That could lead to some big problems if we can’t work out a trade. We could wind up having to eat some of his salary just to get him off the team. Personally I’d rather seem him here this season than give him away for next to nothing. He’s a good player even if he hasn’t lived up to his draft slot.

Oliver is playing on his fully guaranteed fifth year option worth $10.75M this season. They could try to trade him, but I don’t see any teams wanting him with that contract. Maybe if one has an injury during the season but before the trade deadline.

NFL Honors award winners (Daboll is COTY, Mahomes is MVP)
BarleyNY replied to chongli's topic in The Stadium Wall
Reid is Mahomes’ big advantage. Both only have one good receiving option this season. KC has a better OL. Neither have anyone special at RB. The Bills had a better defense when everyone was healthy, but not by the end of the season. Mahomes and the Chiefs, of course, have achieved more. There’s also Burrow and Hurts to consider. Take out Hurts and you have the obvious top 3 IMO. I think the determining factor for me would be okay down the stretch. Allen stumbled by trying to do too much on too many plays. The other two did not falter the same way. I still have Mahomes over Burrow. He did more with a lot less receiving help. So it eems to me like he deserved it. He’s still the best player at the toughest position on the field. If Allen takes the plays the defenses give him and gets some help from Dorsey and Beane he could win MVP multiple times in years to come. -
Commanders may not pick up Chase Young’s 5th year option

Great question. He’s an absolute stud DE when healthy. Some team will roll the dice if the price is at all reasonable. -
How does the majority of the Mafia feel 2022?

Im genuinely sorry if I came off like in a mean way. They wasn’t my intention. I was posting when I was taking breaks at work so some were quick.

Cash spent = Cap hit (sooner or later)
-
I don’t understand Frazier’s comment. The defense the Bills played did nothing to make Burrow hold the ball. Quite the opposite. In any case, personnel and what they can accomplish can always be subverted by poor coaching. That’s a different problem and conversation. One that I think we both agree exists.
-
No. Look at the details of the Roquon contract. He has guarantees for the first $60M, which is paid over the first three seasons. $15M of the $60M cap hit is delayed, but it is still on the books. If they part ways with him after the first three seasons that additional $15M hits the cap. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/roquan-smith-25103/

The DBs could’ve played more aggressively if they could’ve counted on the DL pressuring Burrow. We also would not have had to blitz nearly as much (not that it did a lot of good). Would’ve likely been a different defense played if the DL could’ve gotten pressure. Lack of production from the other players he brought in led to needing to make a move like Von Miller. There is certainly blame to be laid on Beane and the coaching staff that they were in that position.

It has to do with the comment about getting out after three seasons and contract structure. Some contracts ramp up salaries and cash payouts over the course of the deal. Others give more cash up front or pay it out more evenly. The Roquon deal is very even and has an AAV of $20M. The three year out will be $60M. That’s a lot less palatable than a backloaded deal that ramps up where a three year payout could be closer to $50M. Pretty much every 5 or 6 year deal will have relatively low cap hits the first two years, but everything paid (and guaranteed) still has to hit the cap eventually.
