By previous regime, you mean Whaley.

The interesting thing is that both you guys could be correct.

I agree that we gave up way too much to trade up for Sammy - especially given what they gave up to relative to what the Dolphins gave up the prior year - the Dolphins gave up less to move up more spots.

Having said that, trading Sammy for what we got for him proved not to be a good deal. I hate it when my teams buy high and sell low.

Watkins would still be doing nothing in Buffalo. Allen might have gotten a few deep balls to him but that's about it. And with how terrible all the other receivers are, he'd be easy to double cover.

    You miss the point.

The ENTIRE McD philosophy and approach was backwards and broken from the very start.

His philosophy isn't broken but they might want to seriously consider finding scouts that can assess offensive players as well as they can defensive players.

  3. I'd love to see more of what we did against the Pats with Allen at QB, considering he is actually a threat to run or throw and it doesn't have to be snapped to McCoy. Watching the Rams offense, McVay uses motion a lot to get guys separation right from the snap. I think that what Daboll was doing was actually pretty modern and could be effective and get Allen easy reads.

If there isn't one available, then what?

Then we obviously draft one. I get it, this team sucks, you're upset. But you're really throwing out all logic with this. Every team faces the same problems every year. The ones that seem to be unaffected are the ones with good QBs. Only time will tell if we'll be one of those teams. While you may agree or disagree with the aquistions made, they are attempting to build a team like a modern NFL franchise in the era of free agency. Draft draft draft and sign a free agent or two when needed.

    Exactly.

So the $90M in Free Cap defense for McD is kind of irrelevant, since it does not really give them any advantage. That's my point. It's been difficult in the past to sign guys and now the situation is even worse.

That's technically false. With that much cap space, we can make up for the fact that we might have to pay the tax and still get the guys we're after. This is an extremely young team, the free agents we'll be targeting will be mostly offensive line and wide receiver. And wide out is the only one of those two positions where we'll be paying a premium anyways. Don't expect every penny to be spent. "The Process" is clearly based on building through the draft and attempting to add quality free agents where applicable.

  6. Money will be spent along the offensive line where applicable. Possibly a wide receiver if a good one is available. Also have some defensive guys that will need contracts. Looks like we'll have a very high draft pick which will either be traded to move down or an edge rusher will be selected. You may be right that there will be a crappy team tax but how is that really any different than any other year for the past two decades?

B-but Allen was terrible at Wyoming! I even heard Mike Schopp say it on the radio so I know it’s true!

Wyoming is currently 2-6 (0-4 in the Mountain West) and is ranked 120th in the FBS subdivision in total offense.

Its a wonder why Allen didn’t effortlessly light up opposing defenses with video game numbers in such an offensive machine known as the Wyoming Cowboys football program.

To go from that to this situation in Buffalo - I’m beginning to think that Josh Allen may just be the unluckiest SOB alive.

Dude has fought his way to where he is now, he's got a lot more fighting to do. It's unpopular opinion here but I think he'll be alright. Even if it is after Buffalo cuts him or trades him and he goes somewhere else.

I just can't believe how short sighted people are around here. The guy currently taking over the record books was iffy at best for a couple years before getting hurt and singing elsewhere. Sure Rivers is good, but Brees is an all time great. With a ring that San Diego never won.

  8. So the question is, who fires McDermott? Beane? Or Pegula? I actually like the talent they've brought in (though I didn't think it required jettisoning all the talent we had to begin with) but the coaching, my god... It's like watching Chan Gailey's teams except instead of being proficient on offense, it's the defense that's good. I was on the bandwagon until this game. I mean, how? How do you come that unprepared to a game against a 1-5 Colts team? Embarrassing.

  9. I have to laugh at these threads. No matter who we would have picked, they clearly would've struggled. They are ALL currently struggling. Which means you can take Josh Allen's name out and insert any of the other names and these are the same threads we'd have, no matter who it was. Mayfield gonna bust, too small. Darnold gonna bust, weak arm, USC. Rosen gonna bust bad attitude, Jay Cutler.

    Blah. Blah. Blah.

  10. What do you think the success rate is of QBs from college to pros? How many drafted/brought into camp compared to how many actually succeed? And then how many succeed at a high level? Some of the greatest QBs weren't even drafted. It's a crap shoot. If you're going to have a QB that fails, at least put your money on the guy that could be truly great if it all comes together for him. Allen is that guy. They all have trouble processing defenses, making reads, keeping their eyes up under pressure, etc. right now. It's called being a rookie QB in the NFL.

They could have done that.  If they had though, would it have changed things so far this year?  That is all I'm saying.  I would have been OK with starting Allen from day 1 and all that would have done is give him 1.5 games more experience.  And the same record as we have now. And reliance on a backup when he got hurt, the quality of the backup being questionable regardless.

That's a huge assumption. The guys that are most prepared had the most reps in college. It's been pointed out before that Mayfield had something like almost 3 times the reps as Allen in college. Darnold was up there too. So with a physical specimen like Allen, that you want to mold into a franchise QB, the only way to do that is reps, and lots of them.

On a side note, the other huge problem that is ongoing is expecting a veteran to come in and help Allen. That's the job of the coaching staff. If McDermott feels that Badoll and whoever the WR turned QB coach is, isn't able to effectively mentor Allen, he should probably find a coach that can, not expect the backup QB to do it.

  12. The premise of this thread is unbelievably off base. Bringing in your #1 pick and treating him as the starter from day one would have paid dividens. It's all about reps. Splitting reps with AJ and Nate left Allen completely unprepared to start. Peterman should've been long gone after last year's performance. AJ should've stayed on as backup and got his chance to start if the wheels really came off for Allen. That's not even accounting for guys like Henne, Stanton, Osewilier etc that are later in their careers and could've came in as a backup right from the get go instead of signing a guy like AJ that wanted to go somewhere under the false pretense that he is somehow starting material and just hasn't gotten his shot.

With all the bickering going on about McBeane, Peterman, etc, TBD has been quite tense the last few days. More than usual I'd say. So I thought I'd start a thread to cool everybody down. Three questions.

    1. How did you become a Bills fan?
    2. What do you love most about The Bills?
    3. What's your favorite memory as a fan?

    1. Step father was a Bills fan. First game I remember watching was the playoff game we lost to the Browns.

    2. The tradition. No matter how the team plays they somehow garner new fans every year. We don't have to watch a Bills game just like we don't have to celebrate Christmas, right?

    3. Listening to the play by play of the Greatest Comeback on my dad's stereo in the living room. "It's pandemonium!" I can still hear it like I just heard it yesterday.

  14. Another late rounder or UFA rookie signing is fine, but you've got to give Allen more than 4 games. This is just ridiculous the amount of people abandoning ship on Allen after 4 games. He is still raw, yes. But that's what you get with any rookie QB. And while his stats aren't great, he has started to show progress. They're getting the short throws more involved in the offense and he made two huge throws in Houston, one called back and the other he got hurt on. Led a game winning drive against Tennessee. It was just him and the defense against Minnesota.

He absolutely starts next year, no ifs ands or buts. Have to get him the receivers and the offensive line like LA did with Goff. Probably look for another OC too, who knows. But Allen is here, he's part of the plan that Bills fans have waited decades for (high 1st round QB pick) and it needs to play out until 2020.
