  1. Allen had the least amount of starts coming out of college. That's the reason he was considered a project above all else. Lack of experience. Comparing his 2nd year to Russ' second year is a bit misleading because Russ started for 4 years in college. Josh had 649 pass attempts over two full seasons, Russ had nearly 1,500 attempts over 4 years. He had 527 in ONE season. That's a huge gap in experience. Lets just be happy we got our guy and he's improving every week.

  2. He's Josh's number 1 option at the moment and it was great to see Josh not shying away from him. Just throw him the ball. I still think a big and physical guy that can make the acrobatic catches, the 50/50 ball along the sidelines and in the endzone should be a priority this off season. The Bills still need that reason for teams to play zone. A lot of DCs have taken their chances and played man to man and blitzed Allen because they feel they have favorable matchups in the secondary. You put a bigger guy on the other side that teams feel like they have to double to keep their corner from getting "Mossed" down the side line and you completely open up the offense. Allen's arm strength has proven time and again that it can shred zone defenses at all three levels.

Or a big turd- just come here after a bad week and people will tell you!

To be fair, they've kept him hidden behind the line of scrimmage and people are seeing him execute the play that is called. He is something special when's unleashed on blitzes and in coverage. Play calling on both sides of the ball looked much better against Miami. Attacking the QB, simplified offense that actually called normal, NFL style plays that are known to work at timely moments. The staff at this point has got to learn to unleash these young guys every week. They don't need to be coddled, they need to be put in a position to be dominant. Sometimes that means they'll have to swallow their pride and move away from their coveted schemes once in awhile.

  4. A.

He played as well as you could hope. People discounting the opponent is non sense. Phins were on a two game win streak, divisional opponent on the road. It was really a deciding game for the Bills. If they had lost, the tailspin of seasons' past would have begun. Josh and the rest of the team handled their business like you'd expect a team looking towards the playoffs to handle it.

  5. While it was against Miami, I did see a lot more conventional play calling. They threw a couple screens, couple pop passes, even had some seam routes working. Singletary got his 15 touches. He still had a couple throw away drives. Don't like to see 3 pass plays called when you're up. Should've remained balanced since Miami was struggling to stop the run with Singletary in there. But overall it looked much better. Just need to do it 7 more times this year and we're golden.

With his injury history teams might shy away from him.

I think that might be less true with rookie contracts capped the way they are. Used to matter a lot more when you had to sign rookies to high end contracts right out of the gate. However in this situation, he may not even be an option. Hip injuries are rare but very serious. It might be a couple years before he can play again.

My draft crushes are Tee Higgins and CeeDee Lamb. I really think we will be too far down for Lamb, so Higgins is my guy. He’s 6’4” and has a championship pedigree. Exactly what Allen needs opposite Brown.

CeeDee Lamb would be my choice as well. The Bills have equal need of an edge rusher and wide receiver, it will be interesting to see how they fill these needs, whether through the draft or free agency or both.

  8. DiMarco should be inactive and they should move towards using Knox in an H Back role when they feel the need for a FB. Not convert him to H back, just move him there when needed. Imagine those FB wheel routes going to Knox instead of DiMarco. I mean if they are willing to run a jet sweep with Knox, I don't see this as being too big of a stretch.

Daboll needs to scheme for his best players rather than trying to fit players into his best scheme.

McKenzie is also a victim of this. You see small, fast guys like Sproles for instance, get built into an offense all the time. But there has to be a very specific instance where McKenzie sees the field currently.

The constant rotation of personnel has probably created quite a few tendencies that make this offense very predictable to defend.

  9. @MAJBobby that's all well and good when you have an established QB but most teams do not. You run first because you are attempting to create opportunities in the passing game with play action. You want the backers and corners on their toes rather than their heels so to speak, cheating up to stop the run. You can see the difference in our offense when we attempt play action and no one bites and you just end up with a condensed route tree and everyone covered. A multi dimensional offense is always harder to stop than an offense that relies on only the run or only the pass. In fact there are stats that prove passing a lot, passing for over 300 yards, not really that important either, with QBs having about a .500 record when doing so.

  10. Some guys learn to not throw interceptions by throwing a lot of interceptions (Manning). Other guys say to hell with it and hold the record for number of interceptions while wearing the gold jacket (Favre).

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Josh was looking much improved, even with the turnovers at the beginning of the season. Then he threw 3 picks and got a concussion in the Pats game and he's been extremely tentative since. He doesn't have to be careless or reckless but he does need to learn to trust what he sees and throw the ball. There's been a lot of hesitation on his part.

I agree that Josh deserves credit for the steps he has already taken as a quarterback. What I DON'T like seeing, though, is people putting on blinders and pretending like he's immune from criticism. He has progressed, yes, but he has a long way to go. He currently has the 30th ranked QB rating and 31st ranked completion percentage in the NFL, for instance. He has thrown just 10 TDs throw 9 games, despite playing some of the worst teams in the NFL.

Furthermore, as far as "creating rhythm"...how is an offense supposed to have any rhythm when the quarterback fails to hit open receivers so often? How are we supposed to know what identity the offense WANTS to exhibit when the field general of that offense plays so inconsistently and, at times, poorly?

I'm not saying it's JUST on Allen. The Bills offense is a combo platter of suck right now. Daboll deserves some blame. I absolutely agree with that. But to say that he deserves the lion's share of the blame or to try to completely absolve Allen of responsibility for how poor the offense is? That's rubbish.

Did you not pay attention at all to the breakdowns and GIFs from the Browns game? Cover 1 already DID show that there were options on some -- not all, it's true, but more than a few -- of the plays in which Allen either took a sack or threw an incompletion. Yes, Daboll can do more to help Allen, but Allen needs to start to learn to help himself. He needs to take more steps toward being a big boy quarterback. It's not all on the OC. Daboll is an easy scapegoat right now, because it's easier to want to fire the OC than it is to admit that the 1st round, prize young QB isn't getting the job done. It's not an either/or proposition. BOTH need to improve. But this "it's all on Daboll!" stuff has gotta stop. It's ridiculous.

A couple of individual plays don't tell the whole story, only the one you want to hear.

  12. Allen is the 4th most blitzed QB in the league, has the 6th most drops in the league. I'll wait for Cover 1 to come out with a feature about what Daboll is doing to mitigate that. That would take some actual film study to find instances where Daboll has set the offense up for success. I'd also love to see some stat or analytics or whatever they can come up with that supports these deep shots on crucial 3rd down and shorts. Or hell, even a reason why we continue to call deep shots down the right side of the field where Allen's accuracy is weakest, historically.
