  1. As AI becomes more ubiquitous, the White House Thursday promised it would release guidelines for use by government agencies. AI developers are also expected to agree to have their products reviewed at the upcoming DEF CON cybersecurity conference in August. Funding for the proposed research hubs will come from the National Science Foundation and will bring the total number of AI research institutes to 25 across the country. The White House announced it would invest $140 million to create seven artificial intelligence research hubs and released new guidance on AI. The developments come ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris’s meeting with executives from Google’s parent company Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft and OpenAI Thursday. It’s part of the Biden administration’s aim to curtail security risks associated with AI as the technology rapidly develops and to impress on pioneering companies that they can help reduce harm early on. OpenAI is the creator of the widely used AI tool, ChatGPT — bolstered by an investment from Microsoft. Anthropic is another leading startup. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/04/white-house-announces-ai-hub-investment.html
  2. 1303 Most nights at 9 p.m., defendants in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol flicker the lights in their D.C. jail cells to signal to supporters outside that it’s time to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” together. The recital has become a sacred ritual for a subset of Donald Trump’s movement devoted to heroizing the accused rioters. The former president is now embracing their cause, lending his voice to a recording of the “J6 Prison Choir” and playing it to start the first rally of his 2024 presidential campaign. The song, “Justice for All,” features Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance mixed with a rendition of the national anthem. “Our people love those people,” Trump went on to say at the rally, speaking of those who were jailed. “What’s happening in that prison, it’s a hellhole. ... These are people that shouldn’t have been there. https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/interactive/2023/trump-j6-prison-choir/?itid=hp-top-table-main_p001_f001
  3. Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s locations will roll out automated drive-thru ordering nationwide using Presto’s artificial intelligence software. The partnership with CKE Restaurants, the parent of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s, is the largest launch to date for Presto Voice — which is already used at Del Taco and Checkers & Rally’s restaurants. The technology’s adoption at the burger chains is also the biggest rollout for automated drive-thru ordering across the restaurant industry, according to Presto interim CEO Krishna Gupta. Together, Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s have about 2,800 restaurants across 44 U.S. states. Hardee’s locations are mostly in the Midwest and South, while Carl’s Jr. restaurants are found in the West. CKE’s revenue rose 10.2% last year to $646.3 million, according to franchise disclosure documents. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/04/carls-jr-hardees-to-roll-out-presto-ai-drive-thru-ordering-nationwide.html

  18. In the message, he described himself watching a video of Donald Trump supporters beating up someone he referred to as “an Antifa kid.” Carlson wrote of his conflicting emotions, hinting at his dismay that he had found himself “rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him.” But in the most startling passage, Carlson asserted flatly that “jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight.”
