Favorite independent or obscure movie

"The Last Seduction" was a good one. Wasn't part of it filmed in Buffalo? "Buffalo '66" was OK, but I thought Vincent Gallo was a mean and bitter p---k. I'm surprised no one has mentioned a coming of age film for my generation...and it's as funny as hell too... "Better Off Dead" That film was an obscure movie when it was released in 1985, but it has become a cult classic over the years. I especially like the part when Beth tells Lane she's breaking up with him because it's in her best interests to find someone "more popular, better looking, and drives a nicer car". And then everyone is asking Lane if it's OK to ask Beth out...even Barney Rubble over the TV set! And the scene with all the breakup songs on the car radio, and then Lane throws it out the window...classic. "I'm sorry your mom blew up, Ricky." LMAO Mike -
Marv Levy finally loses it...

Marv's starting to sound like Dana Carvey's "Grumpy Old Guy" character from "Saturday Night Live". ...AND WE LIKED IT!! Mike -
I voted yes, but only for Bills fans in school. The team could really use a little divine intervention right about now. Mike

Dear Paco, Even I haven't done that! "Second String" was not a very good movie. And I have it on tape! But only to seek out TSW members in the crowd scenes... Mike

Where are the TRUE BILLS Fans at for there...

I feel the same way...let me tell you the following: In 1990, in the midst of a horrible 3-13 season for my formerly beloved Cleveland Browns, I said I would root for the Browns for the rest of my life, even if they went the next twenty years without a win. Lo and behold, the team up and moved on me five years later. As far as I'm concerned, it made my promise null and void, new team or not. And those two sentences are NOT for the purpose of feeding the frenzy of "The Bills are Moving!" posters on the board. Now, I see what being a fan is. It is sticking by your team through thick and thin. It doesn't mean we become "Stepford Bills Fans" as I saw on an earlier post. We can complain and moan and B word all we want to, but remember, we are FANS. We don't run the team. There's a reason why fans generally don't run teams. Look at Dan Snyder. Exhibit 1-A for the prosecution. I will be patient here. Give Coach Mularkey enough time (since two games does not a career, or even a season, make), and I believe he will turn things around in Orchard Park. Let's just watch and see. Mike -

Y tu Mama Tambien (loosely translated: "And Your Mama Too".) Good coming of age film about two Mexican teens who travel with a thirtyish woman who has a secret...she's beautiful, and they desire her. A couple of surprising twists...very well done (in Spanish, with English subtitles). Mike -
I don't want to sound like a TD apologist, but the Bills were killed by the cap in 2001. TD did an amazing job getting enough cap room and throwing dead weight off to get the Bills to 8-8 in 2002. In retrospect, the team probably wasn't that good. One must remember that drafts are always crapshoots. The "can't miss" player often does miss, sometimes badly. That's simply the nature of the game, and of sports in general. Now it's 2004 and a bad season threatens. I hate early bye weeks (I prefer them around Week Eight), but the bye could not have come at a better time for the Bills. They need this extra time to prepare for the Patriots. I fully expect this team to be prepared next week. They have talent. They have time to get things squared away...and if Belichick doesn't take Drew's head off through constant blitzing, I believe that this next game will be closer than many think. Mike

My favorite independent film is a documentary about the Massillon Tigers high school football team called "Go Tigers!" I saw it about two years ago...if you think football is big in WNY, try Massillon, Ohio. Where the team has gotten into trouble with the Ohio High School Athletic Association for holding kids back a year so they would be bigger and stronger football players. The writer and director, Kenneth Carlson, is a Massillon native and went to Massillon Washington High. He tells the story of the 1999 Tigers in an impartial way, with a bit of a jaundiced eye toward the town that only an insider would have. And not everyone in town is a fan...some of the students who don't like football feel disenfranchised and disconnected. The movie is rated "R"...plenty of bad language and underage drinking. Just like a fall Sunday in Orchard Park, New York. "Go Tigers!" is a good movie. I recommend it highly. Mike -
Gee, I thought you said earlier you'll root for the Bills again when TD is gone. Which is it? Mike

Rest. I've had a busy week, and the next two aren't any easier. While I'm resting, watch the Browns-Giants with one eye open. Mike

I'd like to see you go up to Takeo and say all that. Since he's on defense, Takeo might agree with you somewhat. Before he beats you senseless. Mike

Another one was the Bills' first home Sunday night game in 1990. It was a warm October night, and 79,000+ were at Rich. Lofton caught a long touchdown pass and the crowd went absolutely bonkers...Fandemonium, as Van Miller always said. Mike

For my 500th post, let me say...

For my 1700th Post I say... Congratulations. B) I'm still with the Bills, too. Mike -
What win is bigger than that one? It saved a likely 0-16 season, which would be the only one to date in NFL history. Maybe the 1988 OT win where the Bills clinched the AFC East in Week 12 and the crowd rushed the field. I can't remember who they played. The last game in 1973, where OJ broke 2000 yards? Mike
-
Gee thanks...I think. I saw unbridled joy on the faces of Bills fans that day, which I have only seen one other time. The 1990 AFC Championship Game...the 51-3 rout. Mike

Some of these same protesters spoke out against Chief Wahoo, as you all know, the mascot of my beloved Cleveland Indians. Russell Means first spoke out against this in 1995, when the Indians were knocking the American League around on the way to their first pennant since 1954. He told the press that the protesters were going to be out every night until the team changed the mascot. Indeed the protesters were there for a couple of years...the last time I saw them was around 1998 or so, when there was a court case regarding the actions of one of the protesters...an "inciting to riot" charge that he was eventually found not guilty on. But the protesters stopped...about the same time the Indians stopped winning. My point is, that those who spoke out about Chief Wahoo care more about getting their faces on TV than anything else. Russell Means and Company are publicity hounds, pure and simple. Mike

Some of you are giving the Bills slim-to-none-and-Slim-just-left-town chance of the Bills winning next week. May I remind the naysayers that this is the National Football League. Whose slogan should be "Where Parity Rules". The Bills can beat the Patriots next week. Before the Drew Bashers and Chicken Littles and "The Bills are Leaving!" whiners respond, hear me out. I seem to remember a game in 1984. When the Bills were 0-11 and the Cowboys came to Rich Stadium for, I believe, the first time. The Cowboys, although they hadn't been to the Super Bowl for five years, were still a playoff contender and "America's Team". There were 74,000 people in the stands that day, and most were Dallas fans, hoping for an easy romp over the hapless Bills. Many in the media were wondering out loud if the Bills would go 0-16. Greg Bell ran for 206 yards that day, including a 72 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage, and the Bills won, 14-3. It was probably the biggest regular season win in Bills history and most likely, the biggest upset in the NFL in the 1980's. That game was televised in the Cleveland area and I remember seeing the joy in the reaction of the Bills' fans that day. Good things are going to come. We just need to be patient. Has this team turned the corner? Not yet. But I can see the stop sign from here. Mike

Losman's still hurt...

And why don't we bring AVP back out of the broadcast booth while we're at it? Mike -
It's hard for me to root for Pittsburgh...hangover of my days cheering for the Browns. I'm very happy that the Buckeyes are 3-0, because they really don't deserve to be unbeaten. Teams that have 7 turnovers in their first two games should have at least one loss. Mike

Probably not a bad idea, but I live in a condominium. Maybe there are some light bulbs that need to be changed. Or I could clean out my car... Mike

Maybe it's time to reconnect with my family. Actually, I will probably get together with my friend to watch the Browns and Giants from the Meadowlands. That will be interesting, especially with the Browns being decimated by injuries for the 400th consecutive season. The Bills have been hurt too, between Milloy and Losman. Why do all the teams I like get bitten so hard by the injury bug? Mike

Heroin and smack are the same thing. Stay away from that stevestojan. I've seen what smack can do to people. Mike

"Lost" is a good show...my favorite of the season so far. I quickly got tired of "Joey" last night and saw a terrific documentary on CMT about Johnny Cash and the problems he had with the Nashville music establishment the last 20 years of his life. Mike

Im really becoming concerened we lose the Bills!
buckeyemike replied to Rudyc80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think I can speak from experience here... What will happen in Buffalo is that the NFL has a vested interest in keeping teams from playing musical chairs. No NFL franchise has moved in the last nine years, since the Browns went to Baltimore. I know how that tore my hometown apart. And people forget how bad the NFL looked when three teams pulled up stakes in an eighteen-month time frame. But, the happy ending was that another team came to take their place. And we got rid of Art Modell in the process. It's the CHARGERS who are going to Los Angeles. Rest easy. Tired of the Chicken Littles... Mike
