Hey, the Tribe's truck left for Winter Haven on Friday, so that's a sure sign of spring. As long as we're talking baseball, don't overlook the Cleveland Indians (aka, my beloved Tribe). If Millwood's arm can hold up and the young hitters (Hafter, Martinez, etc.) can continue to develop, the Tribe will be a force to be reckoned with. Even though there's a lot of ifs here, no one can deny that the Indians are improved. Mike

Next year, since the Super Bowl is in Detroit (?!?!?!?), I would like to see the NFL do a tribute to Motown for the halftime show. Can you imagine Aretha and Smokey Robinson bringing down the house at Ford Field? Mike
-
I have to agree. Second-best halftime show ever (behind U2 three years ago). However, the choirs from the service academies doing the Star-Spangled Banner was the best rendition of the national anthem I've ever heard at the Super Bowl, ahead of Whitney Houston. Mike

I like Family Guy, but American Dad sucked. Other than a couple of scenes, like the phone call where the Dad swallows all the pills and then yells for the antidote, it just wasn't funny. The Simpsons, which I thought would be really good, was disappointing. At least LeBron got off a couple of good lines. Tom Brady playing against type was good ("Everyone sucks but me!"), but everything else was disjointed. My grades: The Simpsons -- C- American Dad -- D+ Mike

Browns donate Super Bowl tickets to Marines

This is true...in fact, I understand she may receive an internship with the Browns once she finishes school. A truly nice gesture. Mike -
The 28-24 loss to the Jets was the home opener. Did Jim Kelly start the 1986 season as Bills QB? If so, that was his first game. I didn't think he started the season that year. Mike
-
The game was October 5, 1986. It was a 4:00 game at the Meadowlands (I remember it was the late game that day) and the Jets squeaked by the Bills, 14-13. I think Kelly's first game was the week before against the Chiefs (Buffalo lost that game as well, 20-17). Remember the Bills were 4-12 that year, but with six losses of less than 7 points. Thank God for the Bills Media Guide. Mike

The Wing Bowl... Wasn't it last year when we were
buckeyemike replied to Nanker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, it was last year where this was mentioned. Yes, it's a bad way to treat the noble Wing. This is why Philly fans are insufferable...among many other reasons. Mike -
I wish we had the video. The sight of Ben Dreith punching his hand as he's talking really makes the call. And BTW, it was Gastineau who sacked Kelly, not Lyons. Mike

Black history month in Toronto. It's amazing
buckeyemike replied to Fan in San Diego's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't disagree with your statement, but remember that Canada is a more socialistic (not socialist, but socialistic) society than America. Yes, you get free health care there, but you pay for it in high taxes. The Canadian government is more top-heavy than ours because of all the social programs. Canada is a more liberal nation, liberal in both a good and bad way. They are wrestling with a lot of social issues right now, including same-sex unions and (in the recent past) legalization of marijuana. I don't doubt that they as a whole are more earnest than we are as Americans. However, it doesn't mean that the government always makes the right decision for its citizens. Social compassion is a good thing, and Canada does it well in some areas, mediocre in others. Mike -
The Bills are not moving to Canada....

Probably around 4 million, if you count Hamilton and its environs. Mike -

I would think that the Canadian Football League would have something to say about this... Where do you put the Toronto Argonauts, who are the CFL's strongest team? They are supposed to be moving out of the Skydome/Rogers Centre in the next couple of years, but the CFL needs a Toronto team. The CFL is much stronger than it has been in recent years (the strong Canadian dollar probably has something to do with this), but if Tags tries to put an NFL team in Toronto, expect a nasty court fight. ...because I could not find this book ANYWHERE in the Cleveland area. I am now working my way through it and will post my thoughts once I have finished reading it. I will say this, I always thought Marv had a way with words... Mike

From a former die-hard Browns fan who still has residual love for the Cleveland team in his heart. Thank you. Mike -

How many people here have NEVER been to
buckeyemike replied to taterhill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've never been to a game there, but I did make a pilgrimage to the Ralph last October, so I've been to RWS. I would like to go to a game sometime...hopefully, in the not-too-distant future. Now if I can only convince my wife... Mike -
Citizens Against Nude Juicebars and Pornography
buckeyemike replied to Fezmid's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I guess they couldn't come up with a better anagram. CANJAP? Seriously, it seems that the laws are aimed at the owner of this nudie bar/establishment. Courts have traditionally erred on the side of caution in these situations, giving leeway to the owners of such places over the community interests. It's interesting how no one ever asks the women who dance at these places how they feel about what they do. Do the women enjoy the work? Do they dance to please the men who visit? Or is it all about the money? I'm not the world's greatest defender of such places (the last time I went to one was in the mid-90s), but they do have the right to exist...probably in the middle of a cornfield, like in South Dakota. My God...some people are stupid. That goes for both her and the people wanting to buy something obviously fake. Mike -
(OT) HARD CORE PORN COMING TO ADELPHIA!
buckeyemike replied to Talonz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You will get no argument from me here re: Rigas' selective morality. However, I agree with Promo's earlier post and also bemoan the general coarseness of the society in which we live. Most of you know I'm a practicing attorney, and try to at least operate my law practice with some fundamental decency. I don't like what I see in America...regardless of porn (Playboy doesn't bother me, but the XXX stuff does...there's something just not right there), Enron, Adelphia, politicians, wayward TV evangelists, stuff I see on Dateline, or all this other crap. We spend far too much time on sports and entertainment (that's where I put porn, because that's exactly what it is: entertainment), and not enough just being fundamentally honest and decent human beings to one another. Mike -
...and money spent on porn trumps both. Mike

You ever try to READ "Battlefield Earth", much less watch it? Mike -
First of all, my affinity for Canadian beer on this board is well known. Now, I've had Coors on occasion and it's OK (it is the only American macrobrew I will even sip), but Killian's is excellent. I had some at a ballgame last summer on a 90 degree day...it was perfect! I'm happy the two have merged, largely because it will make Molson more competitive in this country. Maybe I can find more Molson products with the merger. Canadian is easy to find, Golden is there if you look, but I have a hard time finding anything else. Other Canadian brews, except Labatt Blue and Blue Light, are almost nonexistent. I haven't seen Moosehead in Cleveland for several years. As far as beer and the way it should be served? Ice cold is the way to go. Anything else goes against the way God intended. Mike

Don't ever forget Buffalo Bills fans....
buckeyemike replied to Frez's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It also looks like J.P. is gonna get his shot. Can you say elude the rush and time to throw, Bills fans? Mike -
and a Happy Furry Rodent Day to you, too! Wonder if Phil saw his shadow? I haven't heard yet. I guess it's time to pull out my "Groundhog Day" tape again. Great movie, one of my wife's favorites. Mike
