Favre family home destroyed in MS
buckeyemike replied to Sound_n_Fury's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Then every guy I roomed with in college with should have their homes destroyed, right? Mike -
If you're talking about Heart, Nancy's the cute blond one. Her sister Anne might be a little heavy, but she's not a cow. I don't expect other nations to help our problems right now...but collegeguy's right, Canada is sending in some aid. I think that might be about it. Remember, the United States is the only country on Earth that could be self-sufficient if it had to. Mike

People love to slam Buffalo over weather
buckeyemike replied to KRT88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Do you have a link re: fault line in WNY? Yes, Buffalo had the Blizzard of '77. We had a huge one on January 26, 1978 in Cleveland. The whole state of Ohio was declared a disaster area. I was in the third grade, and I remember school being cancelled for two days and my brother sleeping in my parent's room because the wind was howling so much, my father thought Andy's window would shatter. He was only five years old at the time. No matter where you live, nature can unleash its wrath. That's the important thing to remember. I'd still rather have a snowstorm than a hurricane, though. This may be the worst thing I've ever heard
buckeyemike replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If it is true, it's despicable. And, considering all we're hearing, it may or may not be. But help needs to be given to these people...the Red Cross is doing all it can. Some are desperate. Many are taking advantage. There's a big difference between shooting a looter with a loaf of bread and shooting a looter with a plasma TV. I shudder to say this, but we've effectively lost a major American city. That hasn't happened since the San Francisco Fire in 1906, nearly one hundred years ago. Some insurance companies will go bankrupt because of Katrina...up to $29 billion in insurable losses is what I've heard. And, should you choose to donate to a charity, stick with the Red Cross. Some fly-by-night charites may pop up, and take people's money for their own gain. THOSE are the people who should be shot on sight. Mike -

Well, if it isn't my Favorite Longhorn Fan. T-minus 10 days and counting until the Cows go back to Austin with their tails between their legs, buddy. Mike

It's a very good article. If you look at the profiles of the smaller market teams (Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville), none of those cities are much bigger than Buffalo, and the Bills are successfully turning themselves into a regional franchise. If the Bills can take advantage of their proximity to Canada, it could be even better. I don't know if the marketing department has done this or not. That's an advantage only the Bills and maybe Detroit have. I say maybe because about one-fourth of Canada's population is within a three hour drive of Buffalo, and other than Windsor and maybe London, there are no major Canadian cities within driving distance of Detroit. Another advantage the Bills have: little to no stadium debt. It's nice to know that the franchise isn't saddled with having to pay $40 million a year like the Redskins do. There's no corporate name on the stadium (I know there was for 25 years), but the Bills don't need to rely on that money either. Jerry Jones, while successful in gaining beaucoup bucks for himself and his team (and much return over 16 years on a $140 million investment), has not done anything lasting for the benefit of the league, like Duey stated. We bash Jerry because he's a jerk and a sellout, who only worships green pieces of paper. Mike

This will be the first child for my brother and his wife. And the first grandchild for my parents. I say I'll be an uncle again because my wife's sister has three boys already. I'm most thankful b/c nearly four years ago, Andy (my brother) was inside the PATH station under the World Trade Center when the first plane hit. As for Kim and I...we're still trying. And that's half the fun. Mike

If this were one year ago, my response would be "Insert Travis Henry joke here." But only if the girl were under eighteen. Mike

You speak the truth...I'm from Cleveland and remember this well. By the way, congrats on your first post and welcome to our nightmare. Mike

Hey, what can I tell you? Baseball is a summer game, and Kim's favorite season is summer. Baseball is just her speed. I'm still working her on the Bills, however. Mike

I wonder if Tressel would take him back (if he could)... Otherwise, Saskatchewan (hopefully). Mike

For you, yes. For OSU, no. Mike

OT - Aussie evacuates from New Orleans
buckeyemike replied to aussiew's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thank God you're OK. CBB posted yesterday; said he was leaving. It's in the "Almost Silent Thread for New Orleans", second page. I don't think he said where he was headed. Good to hear from you, though. Thanks so much. Mike -
Part of Superdome roof leaking

Whoa. That outside pic of the Superdome doesn't look good. Mike -
Oops...I see it already happened. Never mind. Mike

Anti-Gay Church Protests at GI Funerals
buckeyemike replied to Tux of Borg's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
As some of you know, I am a devout Christian. And yes, I am in agreement with the prior posters. This Phelps guy is not only a moron. He's a disbarred lawyer, a bully, and a wife- and child-beater. God can forgive sin (that's why Jesus came to Earth), but He does not give license to act in this manner. Fred Phelps has done great harm to Christianity with his message of hatred for all those who do not believe as he does. Those who are in sin, need to repent, yes. Jesus said so in Matthew 4:17. But there are such things as bad timing, bad taste, and spewing of hate, of which all three have been perfected by Phelps and his ilk. Christianity does not need you, so-called Reverend Phelps. Take your lies and hate, and go jump in the nearest lake. Mike -
Almost Silent Thread for New Orleans
buckeyemike replied to Chalkie Gerzowski's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good God. I'm praying for all the people of New Orleans. Mandatory evacuation orders have been made for the city and the suburbs. If you can't make it out, best piece of advice is head to the Superdome. They are already taking people in...sit in the upper deck. Mike -
And you're a dork. If I took my wife, the lovely and talented Kimberly, to a Bills game on our anniversary, she would divorce me. Right away. Kim doesn't like football, although I'm trying to change that. It took me five years to get her to watch baseball. So I will not be far away, but I won't be there. Mike

Hmmm...it looks south of the stadium to me. Mike
-
This is going to be controversial, if anyone really cares I will be about a half hour away from RWS, but I don't know exactly where I will be. You see, 9/11 is my 6th wedding anniversary. I will be somewhere in the general vicinity of Niagara Falls. That's where my wife and I will be spending the weekend. So close, yet so far away... Mike

Not Feeling Law School Right Now, Advice?
buckeyemike replied to Arkady Renko's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've been an attorney for 11 years. I absolutely HATED my first year of law school. If you want an asset to try to get you through the first year, try reading a book called "1-L", written by Scott Turow after his first year of law school, and obviously before he became a best-selling author. I love practicing law...but I feel law school is nothing more than a weeding-out process to get rid of those who are not going to give it their all. In reality, so is the bar examination. If the law is not for you, find something else. There is NO shame in that. More than once I wanted to drop it and get my master's and doctorate in history. I admit, more than once I've thought that maybe that's what I should have done, especially the night before a jury trial. A law degree can't hurt, but there is nothing wrong with trying to do something else. Don't let any of the NYC bastards get you down. Mike
