Star and J Phillips play different positions. I think it is much harder to replace Star than you think. Those body types are hard to find. I think Star is overpaid but at this point who cares. It won’t affect ability to sign guys in 2020. They have enough cap room to add a big FA like Amari Cooper and sign Phillips or Lawson. I would tag Lawson and cut Murphy. Then try and sign Phillips

It'll be interesting to see what they do with Murphy. He's certainly going to be a popular vet cut option from fans as he'd save around $7 million on the cap, but he's been playing better, so unless you have an obvious upgrade (Yannick?), I think you keep him for his final year of his contract.

Harrison and Star play mostly the position though, right? Keep Star next year while Harrison gets to 100% and then cut him and save $10 million on the cap the next two years. His dead cap hit isn't bad either of the next two years, so he could be around for two more, but I don't expect him to be around for the length of his contract.

I don't disagree that Star is harder to replace than I'm making it out to be. I'm certainly not in the "cut Star now, he sucks" group. I'm just thinking about in 2 years, I'd much rather have a potential slight downgrade with Harrison over Star (even that's debatable, Harrison was playing very well to start the year) and have that extra $5 million in cap space in 2021 and then $10 in 2022. At that point Star is going to be 31, I don't know if $10 million for a mostly run stuffing 31-32 year old makes a ton of sense.

Jordan has had a big impact against the pass, he had Shaq lead the team in sacks. They're both going to get paid, hopefully here. If they keep Star around, that'd be a ton of money allocated to the D-line. That said, the D-line is one place I'm totally OK spending a lot on.

I edited this a few times and am a little bit all over the place with the contract numbers. Whatever happens, I really hope they re-sign Jordan and Shaq.

Assuming it was 100% Coughlin, that still looks poorly on Marrone, IMO. Does he not have any communication with Coughlin, the players, or the training staff? Does he not know the rules or have any idea of what's going on within the organization?

That might be too much cash. Especially with Star, Jerry, and Murphy. Not that I'd mind getting rid of them, just not sure how that would work.

Star has an out after next year that would only cost $5 in dead cap. Murphy only has one more year left and his dead cap would only be $1.75 million if cut next year.

I'd much rather have J Phillips over Star, I'd be surprised if they don't use that out after next year. Keep him around next year while H Phillips gets to 100% and then you've got Jordan, Harry, and Ed as your top 3, that's a damn good looking group.

You're right, it would be a lot of cash tied up. It depends how much Jordan (and Shaq) are looking for.

I think they might have to give Phillips a nice chunk of change and keep him around. He's playing at a high level and he's the first guy I think of when you said fearless. Shaq too, I think you have to sign these guys, even if it means moving on from Murphy and or Star in a year or two.

He and Oliver wanted Pittsburgh to see it. They don't give a ***** and I love it.

    Like you said, fearless.

Me personally I don’t like it. I like being the underdog and not being hyped up. I like the real Bills fans on here, more popular we become the more bandwagon fans jump on and make the rest of us look bad. Nothing sickens me more than Patriot and now Raven and Chief fans bragging how great their team is and you know they weren’t fans during the tougher years. And I like the fact this team plays with a chip on their shoulder that nobody outside of bills mafia believes in them. With that said it surely doesn’t upset me to see the team get some love.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, McDermott is going to keep the underdog mentality in them so they keep working. Did you see the locker room speech? "Everyone says we aren't big enough, or fast enough, but they don't know the size of our hearts," something to that effect.

He's going to keep them focused, it doesn't matter how much love they get.

The ones chucking it up all over the place are usually behind or playing a really crappy D ;)

This team lets you march in between the 20's all day long then makes you settle for FG's

They have taken bend but don't break to new level :)

They're 3rd in yards per game against...

All defenses give up yards. Saying they let teams march up and down the 20's is not accurate.

I get how you feel. There are times it feels like they're giving up a buncha yards but are able to clamp down before giving up TD's.

  5. I'm completely with you in regards to McDermott being conservative. We saw him go for it on 4th and 6 early in the game. He's done that in multiple games and last week he went for two while the old football heads were baffled about it. He's aggressive at times and conservative at times.

I thought running out the clock at the end of the half was the correct move. Moving the ball 50-60 yards was going to be very tough, don't run the risk of giving away points when your defense is playing that well. You just got lucky, don't push it in this type of game.

  6. McDermott is such a damn good coach. The way he prepares this team is miles ahead of what we've had in a long time.

    Quote

“We finally heard our song!” Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes said. “And when you get to hear it, with all the Terrible Towels waving and the fans going crazy, it had us fired up. We said, ‘If this is a playoff atmosphere, we’re ready for it.’ ”

The moment delivered a thunderbolt thrust in Buffalo’s 17-10, playoff-clinching victory.

Unlikely a coincidence, the first play after Pittsburgh’s anticipated hype video, Josh Allen fired a pass to John Brown up the left sideline. Brown outmaneuvered cornerback Steven Nelson despite interference and came down with a 40-yard gain to Pittsburgh’s 30.

Allen went to Brown in the end zone on the next play. That ball fell incomplete, but Buffalo clearly was the bloodthirsty team.

“Not a coincidence,” Phillips said. “We knew exactly what we were going to do when we heard that song.

“That’s their thing, and we said that once we heard it we were going to expose ’em.”

The drive took just six plays and barely two minutes. Allen spotted tight end Tyler Kroft 14 yards away in the end zone for what would be the winning touchdown.

Buffalo’s cocksure attitude has been present all season, but its audaciousness grows by the week.

I just wish there was some video footage of the Bills sideline. I'd love to see that.

scared the Sh#t out of me, BUT, we are better than 1 player. I have faith that McD / Leslie can scheme up an answer. But boy is it nice to have the best corner in football lockin down a guy all game.

"Broken collar bone, he's done, #&$%" is what I said to my wife.

The defense is definitely good because all 11 do their jobs, but he's probably the best player. Losing him or Edmunds would be big blows.

The defense is so much fun to watch.

They finally sniffed out a screen!

Another day of practice inside in shells, what's up with that?

Letting them heal up a bit I imagine. They had a physical game against the Ravens and another one coming. It's late in the year, I imagine the hour of hitting won't benefit them that much compared to some extra rest.

If the Bills win Sunday night I have a feeling many of us will be dragging at work the next day. I know I will be to pumped to go to bed at 11:40 if the Bills win. Have to watch the post game show, go on the internet. Monday at work I will be like those people in those energy drink commercials who are falling asleep at their desk at 2:30 during a work day. That will definitely be me.

Monday is going to be rough regardless.

My tip is water, water, and Gatorade. 32 oz water before the game, 32 oz water at halftime, and a 32 oz Gatorade at the end of the game.

I usually stick to the hard stuff because if I only drink beer, I'm too full to drink any water and I feel just awful the next day.

He’s looked bad against a lot of inferior defenses too though. Philly Cleveland the opening game against the Jets weren’t exactly great. He did enough to win. And he’s improved a lot of stuff from last year.
(1)Hes still missing wide open guys. (2)Can’t hit a deep ball. (3)Very inaccurate on short routes. (4)And still throwing some 100 mph fastballs when it’s not needed at all. (5)And he’s shown a real problem fumbling.

I have no disagreement that he’s here for the duration of Beane and McDermott’s time. And I still have all the faith in the world he can deliver. But it’s concerning to see a lot of these issues showing up and even more concerning they show up in games they should be dominating on offense. Part of the reason we do not have the killer instinct to put teams away is his inability to have consistency. I don’t want to get into a big thing over it I might sound like a bit of a hater but I really don’t spew negatives a lot over him I just think as fans were getting a little ahead of ourselves on his progression so far and where he’s at.

    1. I have seen fewer and fewer examples of this. Are there specific plays from the Ravens game you saw this?

    2. He's certainly struggling with the deep ball.

    3. I'd need evidence of this too, he's been much better. Still needs to work on the fine accuracy, but he's not missing guys and I don't think "very inaccurate" is even close to what his short area accuracy currently is.

    4. He's gotten a lot better about that, would love to have some examples.

    5. He's gotten a lot better about that too. The fumble against the Ravens was when he got hammered in the pocket, it happens.

Anyone saying they aren't nervous about this game is on some quality prescription drugs.

I am not quite yet sold.  He is a a little short on the run plugger side.......he can run them down sideline to sideline, but straight at him, and he doesn't get there like a Spielman would.  So, I am still waiting until he  can play that role like a MLB should be able.......

Holy ***** am I happy you aren't making personnel decisions for this team.

You can always have hindsight. Brady was drafted in the 6th round. For Jackson, his Wonderlic Test score was at the very bottom of the quarterbacks tested at the combine. Josh Allen's score was tops by a large margin. I have wondered if Jackson's very low score affected teams interest in the top part of the draft. It is very clear, however, that the Bills had targeted Allen for the very things he brings to Buffalo.

Don't forget the Ravens drafted a TE in the first round before they drafted Jackson.

  13. Tre is going to get paid and he's going to deserve it all. He's got the desire and ability to be great, he was soaking up everything Bruce had to say.

I've got a soft spot for Tre because he's got a kid around the same age as mine and when they showing him having a good time with his kid it melts my heart.

Like @Rc2catch said, I'm going to riot if they let him walk.

  14. The sacks are what gets the attention and players paid, but man, those run stops were gorgeous. Avoiding a reach block and stringing out Collins and then taking on a double team, holding his ground against an elite G, and making the tackle, just GD fun to watch.

These happen so fast in the game, there's too much going on, so I really appreciate these breakdowns. I've watched the run stops about 15 times each.

His strength for his size is something else. Let's not forget he played a ton of 1 tech in college and not as much 3t like he is now. The future is bright for this kid.

Yup Singletary emerging as a force has changed everything. Now we can run option offense that teams have to respect. This was always our destiny if we got far enough. Also, it's so nice to have bruisers like Feliciano who can shift over to center and we don't miss a beat.

Edit: what's exciting is Allen and Singletary still have another level they can get to with the option. Josh let Devin get crushed by a DE in one of the exchanges early today. We already know he's good at that but those two don't have as many game reps together as Allen/Gore. More of those plays are going to start becoming big plays IMO because they're both such threats as runners.

If you're referring to the play I think you are, that was Mckenzie. It looked like Josh tried to pull it out but Mckenzie held onto it.

I wish they'd run Gore out of single back instead of shotgun. He seems to do better with a little bit more of a head of steam. Singletary and Josh running the read option / RPOs is money.

The most encouraging part of the day for me was how many solid throws Josh made out of tight pockets. The oline did a good job today, but not great. They were getting pushed back a bit and instead of Josh bailing from the pocket, he stood in and made quality throws. Josh is progressing very, very nicely.
