  1.

Having watched him for the first time on Tuesday night against the Lightning, I really liked what I saw. Command during stoppages in play, amazing puck skills, ALWAYS having the puck. Can't wait for the next 10 years with him.

And Chad Johnson is Jacque Cloutier 2.0!

That was Eichel's best game as a pro so far. He was all of the place, calm with the puck, and was making defenders look slow. Even in just the 12 games or so you can see he's already getting more comfortable on the ice and gaining chemistry with the team. It's fun to watch their transformation from no chemistry and unfamiliar with the system to a real hockey team.

  2. this is america, hockey is irrelevant. it's somewhere below NASCAR and the PGA tour. but hey, still more fans than MLS soccer and WNBA

i'm a Sabres fan but just telling it like it is. the NFL is america's game (sorry baseball). an early season hockey game has no relevance

And that has what effect on yours or anyone else's ability to enjoy it?

I'll be bringing the bed room TV into the living room and watching both. There's enough stoppages in football to keep an eye on both. Of course now that the Sabres are winning a little bit and I care now, I'll be a drunken nervous wreck for a few hours this evening.

Anyone dogging the sabres hasn't watched Eichel and the new team play yet. They are very exciting.

  3. When I heard they are doing this color rush for the thursday night games, I looked at the schedule and wondered what they would do next week. Blue vs green would be too close. If I were the Jags, I would have petitioned for black. That gold is awful.

Here are the rest of the Thursday games.

    Eagles vs Lions

    Green vs Silver?

    Packers vs Lions

    Green vs Silver again?

    Vikings vs Cards

    Purple vs Red

    Bucs vs Rams

    Red vs Blue

    Chargers vs Raiders

Lt. Blue vs Silver? I'm not sure about this one.

Looks like really only the Bills and Jags had to get something different, except maybe the Chargers vs Raiders game. Will the Packers go with green and gold or will they have new green pants?

I kind of like the idea, not sure yet how I feel about the red Bills jerseys though.

  4. 0% chance a penalty like that ever gets called on Edelman who is a douche after every single catch. It doesn't absolve SJ but the league is ridiculous.

I was trying to find a video of the flag, because players spike the ball all the time. If you spike it towards another player or throw it at someone, that's always a penalty. Spiking it after a big play though, that's not always called.

    Anyone got video of it?

  5. The biggest blunder they made was not calling a time out at the end of the 1st half when Miller failed to get out of bounds. That play started at 29 seconds, I believe he was tackled around 20ish. They call a quick time out, they have two more downs to throw it into the end zone and then kick a field goal. Tannehill and Campbell really blew that one.

Back to the topic, I would have kicked a FG to end the half, gotta score points. Especially getting the ball back, failing to get points is deflating.

I probably would have declined the penalty and gone to 4th down. That's a tougher decision, but I generally would want to give the offense fewer chances to get a first or score. The way the Bills were converting 3rd downs makes that a tough call.

  6. yes - a small percentage of plays. In all the other ones... He didn't get to the QB. Not all Rex's fault. All those times he rushed the passer and didn't get there? Cincy has great tackles and was executing max protect with 6 OL - that's nice that they respect our DL enough to use an extra guy but they have so many studs on offense they can afford to do that and still make plays. IMO against most teams Mario is as dominant as he wants to be, but he's not going all out all the time.

I don't think it's just having those guys drop into coverage. It doesn't look like they're flying off the snap like they were last year. Hughes used to get offsides penalties or miss time the snap, have to jump back onside and basically be ineffective for a play because of it. It drove me crazy, but most of the time he was getting good jumps and either driving his tackle back into the QB or he'd go around the OT and forced the QB to step up in the pocket. I honestly don't remember a single time he's done that this year, jump offsides I mean.

Mario looks down right slow off the snap this year. He never appeared as quick as Hughes or even Kyle, but this year the front four looks like they're just there to occupy blockers and play their 2-gap assignment. Sure that's effective against the run, but against the pass they look slow and ineffective. I know QB's are going with quick throws, but even when they don't, I don't think the front four is getting as many hurries or hits on the QB as last year.

That all takes me back to Dareus' quote. When I watch the front four, they don't appear to be flying off the ball, looking to attack the pocket which lines up with what Dareus said.

What does Dareus' quote mean to you? In your opinion, is he just complaining?

  7. Mario must have been told to stand up straight, put his arms out in front of him, place them on the chest of the tackle and just stand there, because I see that a lot.

I can't tell if that's the defensive coaches making them focus on the run so much or what. I've noticed that too with Hughes as well. He used to fly off the ball, but I don't see that this year.

Look at this quote from Dareus.

“It’s not been a lot of times where there have been all four of us, full tilt, ears pinned back and we’re going after it. We haven’t had a lot of that this year. Hopefully Rex is going to implement it. There’s nothing we can do.”

    http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/buffalo-bills-rex-ryan-responds-criticism-defensive-schemes-102115

The coaches are telling them to do something that isn't working.

  8. I don't know what Rex is doing. He says it's the players scheme, not his. That's BS. I don't know if it's his ego or what, but he's bringing down the defense.

“Hey, like [Williams] said, they pay us a lot of money,” Dareus said, via Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports. “And we want to use our talents the best way we know how. If we’re going to be dropping we don’t want to get questions about not getting sacks. That’s just how it is.

“It’s not been a lot of times where there have been all four of us, full tilt, ears pinned back and we’re going after it. We haven’t had a lot of that this year. Hopefully Rex is going to implement it. There’s nothing we can do.”

    http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/buffalo-bills-rex-ryan-responds-criticism-defensive-schemes-102115

That is literally what the front four does best, pin their ears back and attack.

Get your head out of your ass Rex.

  9. I'm good with Whaley and I agree, I don't really understand the Whaley bashing.

That said, what Rex has done to this defense is embarrassing. The D-line has been neutered by (I think) focusing too much on the run. There's no urgency on the pass rush. It's like they tie up the blocker and are waiting for the run so they can play their 2 gap responsibility, but when it's not a run, then they're tied up and don't get to the passer. That might not be right, but we're not seeing the front four go hard right at the snap. I used to get pissed when Jerry would jump offsides, but I'd prefer that over whatever the hell they're doing now.

  10. Awesome gesture made by Dareus to pay for all of those kids and people from his past. The interview on the John Murphy show was really good. Marcell has caught some heat for getting into trouble, but I'm damn happy they were able to sign him long term.

Those crying about his sack numbers need to do some research or something.

    Here's a start: http://www.wgr550.com/JW-All-22-Review-Bills-Titans/22064856

Here's a hint, Marcell and the D-line are doing a lot, even without putting up sack numbers.

Want to know something crazy? Seattle had the best defense in terms of points against last year. Guess where they were as a team in sacks? 20th.

Just some food for thought for those getting bent out of shape over the number of sacks so far.

  11. Bills D rank 8th in QB Pressures (67). Mariota under pressure- 48.4% completion rate (20th). 29.5% sack rate (1st), pressured on 39.3% (7th)

They're still getting pressure even after Brady and Manning threw the ball in record time.

Gotta cut out the mistakes and cut down on the points given up. The D will be fine, the offense needs to get back on track though.

  12. Seems odd our best RB and highest paid is out and more or less has been all year which is 25% of the season and our best receiver Sammy is out for the better part of that. Really makes you wonder if all the money is worth it. Sammy not so much the money yet but he will want it. He has been hurt too much. I don't know Shady's history on being hurt but we are paying him a lot and have received little in return. Just doesn't sit well with me.

Sure, if Whaley had neglected other positions and depth in order to sign Shady, then you'd have a much more valid argument.

Do you think the Cowboys are upset they resigned Dez Bryant and now he's hurt?

Shady doesn't have much of a history of being hurt. Injuries happen. Bringing up hindsight on injuries is pointless. Sammy had one injury in college and was healthy otherwise. It's almost impossible to predict injuries so why get upset when they happen?

  13.

What was a stupider call was the Vick QB run on the other 4th and 1. It looked like they almost snapped his neck off. They could get whatever they wanted with those counter runs using Bell all night, and yet abanonded it at crunch time.

By the way, now you know why Todd Haley is so up and down. He is sometimes way too cute for his own good-- something that a QB like Big Ben can mask with his excellent play, but that Vick obviously can not.

That was horrible. Empty set shotgun into a QB sweep? Awful call, the whole D collapsed when he started running.

  14.

That OC last year and for the three years before that was Roman, who just never was much loved in 49ersland, including by family members of team executives and I think we can safely assume that team executives and team owners didn’t much support Roman last year, either.

In fact, there is much speculation that 49ers management wanted Roman replaced going into the 2014 season, and amped that up when the 49ers started to sputter early on in 2014, and that was part of the friction between management and Jim Harbaugh.

    ...

One or the other, it really can’t be both. Or it was just general dislike of Roman, the easy scapegoat, the non-dynamic figure, the guy ownership and fandom could lazily write off as the thing holding back Kaepernick and the offense.

Hell, I think they even got Kaepernick and some of the players thinking that, just by saying it so often behind closed doors.

Some speculation there, but that sounds like a pretty bad situation to be in. I guess with the early success they had, not improving might make things tough, but that sounds pretty bad.

Maybe/hopefully he'll see how good things run here between the FO and coaches and want to stick around a few years. G-Ro is only 43, there's plenty of time to be a HC.

  15.

Shouldn't matter. He can't block on a passing play before the ball is caught. That was OPI

Very true. In my mind, I imagine the refs see that as the CB also looking to make contact in the first 5 yards and knock the WR off their route versus going after a different CB and straight up blocking them.

When it happened, I was hoping there was no yellow on the field. I see teams doing this more and more. I wonder if the NFL is going to bring it up to the refs and if we'll see it called more frequently throughout the year. It's a fine line between a penalty and good play.

  16. The last GIF, Sammy could have easily (and probably should have) been called for offensive PI.

    929McCoyTD.gif

Instead of making contact on those, I think the WR should stop his route like he's running a quick hitch and just kind of box out the CB like he's trying to gain position for the throw.

Edit: Just rewatched it and I changed my mind. I was thinking he went and started blocking the CB that was covering McCoy. Great play there.

  17.

I actually think things like that are important. If a player shows up to camp and knows the ins and outs of the organization, it shows that he has interest in the greater good of the team, not just playing for a contract anywhere he happened to get drafted. Maybe the "CFO" is a little overboard but it's more of a way to set an example.

I guess. I'd be way more worried about whether the player shows up on time and whether he knows his assignments before I gave a crap if he know the company execs.

He also was quizzing them on who other players were. That's understandable, but some exec who he may never see, who cares.

  18. Well, as long as he is committed to a plan ... Seriously, I watched a bit of Hard Knocks and every time I looked at or listened to O'Brien I thought of Doug Marrone. I got the chills and could not watch anymore. Does not say much for Houston' prospects.

I watched for like 10 minutes and he was quizzing guys on the names of the CFO and other execs. Why the hell do these guys need to know who the CFO is?

I was thinking the same thing while watching, this is some random crap that Marrone would probably love.
