I've been pretty down on Dion the last year or so. I thought he played an excellent game on Sunday. Perhaps his best game in the last 20.

I have no idea how he will be graded out but it looked like he was holding his own one on one the entire game and giving far less ground than he had earlier this year. If he can play at this level all year maybe they keep him next year. His cap hit is only marginally more than this year. His dead cap hit is over $7M. That would save them $8M in cap space but leave them relying on a rookie to play LT.

    What did others see?

The much more likely scenario is they extend his contract in the offseason.

They aren't going to cut him and rely on a rookie to block Josh's blind side.

Now, if after the year he balloons and gets fat and quits on football, sure he could be cut. Or if after next year he asks for $16 million plus, they'll let him walk, but otherwise he'll be on the team next year.

I see "Let's cut this vet for cap space" ideas on this forum. When was the last time Beane actually did that? Especially a drafted and developed player like Dawkins.

  2. I loooooove primetime games. As a father of 2, day games consists of both girls constantly asking for tickles or for me to read a book to them while my wife occasionally says, "stop messing with Dad" while playing on her phone.

Primetime games I can relax, drink a beer without fear of someone throwing themselves at me and spilling it everywhere, and give the game my full attention.

Don't get me wrong I think Taron is a great football player and a top NCB, but next season is the last on his contract.

I don't know if the Bills will be able to afford him.  Some team will pay him big money I'm guessing.

It will be very interesting to see what happens.

I'd be surprised of Taron gets big money from somewhere else. He's already 27 and his last deal with the Bills was 3 years for $24 million. I'd expect something similar again from the Bills, maybe this offseason to avoid getting to free agency.

Someone mentioned it a while back, but the flow of the entire D is awesome to watch. Their spacing is on point and everyone is doing there 1/11th. I also loved the run play where Bernard stands in the hole for a split second and then darts into the next gap as soon as the running makes a cut. As soon as Bernard leaves that gap, Taron comes flying in through there while Bernard helps stop the runner in the next gap.

Not to dog on Tremaine too much, I was always a fan, but this is rough.

Bernard just seems to fit in this defense better than Tremaine did, especially with McD calling a more aggressive game. I was worried about Bernard dropping into deep zones, but even that he looks like he's excelling by reading the QB and having a great feel for zone D.

    You guys remember this thread?

Zappe reminded @Einstein of Tom Brady. Then the very next week they played the Bears on Monday Night Football. Mac Jones stunk up the joint, causing Pats fans to chant for Zappe. Zappe came in and played worse. Life comes at you fast in the NFL.

That game was absolutely incredible to watch. Mac stunk up the joint, then Zappe comes in and scores two TD's and the crowd was going absolutely bonkers. They found their guy!

The rest of NE drives went

    Fumble - Zappe

    Punt - 3 and out

    Punt - 3 and out

    Interception

    Interception

The score after Zappe's two TD's, 14-10, final score, 33-14.

  5. Last year felt like they were trying to run it back with the 2021 squad with just a few tweaks. Who knows how it would have panned out had all of the adversity not occurred and they were a little bit more healthy in the playoffs. I wonder if they got a little complacent last year during the offseason as well. They were right there and probably felt if they kept business as usual, they could get back to where they were with some tweaks.

This year feels different. The doubters are out in full force and there's a massive chip on their shoulder. Josh, Diggs, McD, Dawkins, Poyer (On one of the embedded McD comments on much stronger his legs look), and I'm sure a lot more all seem to have a new level of focus. This isn't running back last year's squad, this feels like almost a new team. The offense is going to be different with a HR hitter as RB1, 12 personnel with a true slot option, not to mention (please baby Jesus) a better O-line, better WR depth, and year two of Dorsey.

The defense should look different without Fraizer and Edmunds. There will be some growing pains with the MLB position, but I'm excited to see what it looks like. Edmunds best attribute was sitting back and reading and reacting. I think a lot of what they did was based off of this. At times we're definitely going to miss it because he was damn good at a bunch of things, but hopefully we see some more aggressive play from the MLB position and more creativity on blitzes and coverages.

Suffice to say, I'm super mother f^<#!ng pumped for this year.

  6. Not a fan of the all blue, but I guess it's time to accept that it's the primary home combo these days.

This is by far the best combo. The white, blue, white, blue just looks so good to me, I love the contrast and how clean they look. The all blue is just too much. Thankfully not quite the eye sore the all red is, those are awful.

  7. I'm super excited about Benford. He looks smooth, calm, smart, and sticky out there. Cover1 did a great video showing his skills.

I bet almost no one outside of Buffalo knows who he is, but come Monday they'll get a glimpse when the pass D is making Rodgers life miserable.

I feel bad (as bad as I can for a guy making tons of money to play football) for Elam more than anything. All he's done is go out there and work his tail off, but really he got drafted into a poor situation for his skillset. I'd bet he'd start for a lot of teams in the league, especially ones that focus on man to man. Instead he's been forced to learn a ton of new coverages and techniques while another draft pick was able to come in and hit the ground running.

I'm excited to watch CyBo and really hoping he can bring a bit more consistency to the middle of the line. He's got a hell of a test in week 1, I just hope when he gets beat he can slow guys down a little bit as opposed to getting beat cleanly and having someone in Allen's face in about half a second. I really want to see more play-action which will maybe allow him to get his hands on guys quicker and lock them down. He's so strong, once he gets those paws on pads near the armpits of the lineman, it's basically over.

With Bernard's size, hopefully the D-line can really excel. The addition of Ford should help, that way they can have a big run stuffer in there while Jones gets a breather. That and another year in the system for Settle, it sounds like he's playing better this year so far. He was a bit of a disappointment last year.

What I like about this trio starting is that they all have a ton of upside. We aren't plugging in vets hoping for a high floor type performance. I want to see some youth integrated into the lineup who make plays and take over a job for a long time.

  8. I wonder what Allen was up to the night before the HR derby. He showed up late and a couple guys were giving him crap and asking if he felt alright. I wonder if they had a big party since a bunch of guys were in town. It would help explain that dismal display on the last pitch.

Rousseau, Boogie, and AJ were all at Von's camp. Whether they pan out or not, at least they're out there putting in the work. Is it FINALLY the year the investment in the D-line pans out? It would be really freaking nice if it finally did.

He's a glorified WR. Those cuts are insane at his size.

Kincaid gets crazy low on his breaks, he reminds me of Beasley. He definitely has the smarts to get open against zone, hopefully he can come in and quickly win his 1v1 matchups and really keep teams honest.

I can't imagine this hasn't been posted, but I'll post a link again.

Kincaid is absolutely perfect for this offense. Hopefully Torrence can come in and lock down one guard spot. I think the offense has every kind of weapon needed to excel and be dominant, we just need the O-line and Dorsey to perform better.

  10. An interesting part was when Elam said he just started watching film on veteran CB's in the league. He said he's watching guys that may have lost a step and really focusing on their technique and how they still play at a high level.

For a kid coming from a college team where he played basically all man to a team that runs a ton of zone, he had a steep learning curve, which we all knew. He's also mentioned how he had to get out of his head and realize it was going to take time and not get down on himself. Considering those two factors, I'm not at all surprised he struggled to start the season.

I'm very excited for a healthy Tre and a second year Elam.

The Buffalo Bills are promoting defensive line coach/senior defensive assistant Eric Washington to assistant head coach/defensive line coach, the team announced Wednesday.

Washington has been the Bills' defensive line coach since 2020; he has helped the defense finish 1st in points per game allowed in 2021 (17.0) and 4th in 2022 (19.1).

Ahead of the 2022-23 season, Washington was promoted to senior defensive assistant.

In addition to being the assistant head coach in the 2023-24 season, Washington will continue his role as Buffalo's defensive line coach.

  12. Crazy betting story from that day.

    Quote

You'll excuse Herman Gaynor if he never bets, let alone, watches another NFL game in his life.

Gaynor, a 36-year-old, unemployed, homeless man stood to win $1,600 off a $2 parlay card Sunday.

All Gaynor needed to complete his 10-team parlay was the Buffalo Bills to cover 3½ points against the New England Patriots.

The Bills appeared to have won, leading 21-17 with only seconds left. But thanks to two highly questionable calls by the officials, the Patriots scored a touchdown on the final play.

That gave New England a 23-21 lead as both teams started to leave the field. Watching the game at the Stardust Hotel sports book, Gaynor still felt safe since he had Buffalo plus 3½.

Even if the Patriots kicked the extra point, they would win by only three. Feeling secure, even after this wild finish, Gaynor went to the bathroom.

What greeted him as he came out was pure horror.

  13. I don't have much of an issue on the block to Taron. I've seen Dawkins and other lineman pancake a guy and then throw themselves on top of em. Luckily they've never hurt anyone, I think it was just an unfortunate injury.

The guy rolling on Josh? That was dirty AF. You can see him pause and then thrown himself at his knee. Super, super dirty.

  14. Last week Cook almost caused an INT because he didn't find the throwing lane for Allen. This week he found the passing lanes and did a very good job of catching the check downs and moving the ball.

I like how they used Hines to stress the LB's horizontally and that helped free up creases for Cook.

Last night was a nice step for Cook and the run game. The offense looks much, much better when they're in 2nd and 5's instead of 2nd and 9's all game.

This game was awesome! The legendary "Baccari f---n Rambo" picked off Rodgers not once, but twice in this game and Marcus Thigpen returned a punt for a score on a day when Kyle Orton's passing attack was... well, as expected of a Kyle Orton passing attack. What a hilariously awesome win!

I was at a bar with a huge Packers fan, she was PIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSED.

Same when I went to the Bills at Falcons a number of years back, the Tre scoop and score game.

A lot of, how the puck did we lose to the BILLS?!?!?

It's nice now expecting wins and not hoping for some crazy stuff and eking out a win.

  16. I enjoyed last night, but not nearly as much as I enjoyed the Monday night game. Seeing the pats and that shithole fanbase eat ***** is much more enjoyable than just brady, but it is quite delicious to see that ####### make terrible throws and have no one to yell at.

All I want to see is him yelling at a lineman and someone shoving that old B word to the ground.

The question is, does he make it to the end of the year? If they suck enough, does he fake an injury and quit? I can't imagine he plays another year, but I would love if this went on for another year or two and another desperate team picks him up. Colts anybody?

Not necessarily maximize the wind, but wind certainly is an advantage for us over the years- especially from a kicking standpoint.  Over time, our kickers / punters get used to the all the intricacies and nuance of kicking in our stadium w/ unique wind pattern, but visiting kickers aren't.

I understand the reasoning but for me, keeping the wind down to avoid negatively impacting the offense is more important.

What they need are some huge doors, like 100' by 30' at one end that they can open in a 2 minute span that would allow the wind to come in. Oh the chiefs have the ball with a minute to go and they need a FG to tie the game? Open the doors!

  18. 1 hour ago, saundena said:

    No red endzones, fail!

In all seriousness, I like it.  I wish the capacity was a bit larger (more screaming fans = louder game day experience).  The bills usually sell out so the decision to reduce capacity is a bit curious.

I wonder if the architects and engineers will build in some sort of "advantage" to maximize crowd noise like in Seattle, or orient the stadium relative to the lake to maximize wind swirl, etc.

Finally, I hope they figure out a way to honor Ralph in some way.

Would you really want them to maximize wind swirl and turn every game into a mess where no one can pass the ball? I know Allen has a canon but he can't throw through everything.

I'm pretty sure they designed the stadium to minimize the wind, which is the way to go.

Maximizing crowd noise should definitely be a priority.

These posts are THE worst.  It’s also a play that we’ve seen Mckenzie make in the past.  You’re talking about one moment of time.  One play.  One time.

You saw Shakir have a ball go right through his hands and hit him in the shoulder. I think that’s a play you’d see dirty make.  That one time…..

McKenzie is a seven year pro who's missed similar plays in the past. He's not a bad or dumb player, I just don't see that high level IQ in the heat of the moment I see from Shakir or plenty of other of players.

It's like watching Allen in the pocket after years of Losman, Edwards, or Manual sitting in a pocket for 3 seconds only to get sacked because they're oblivious to what's going on around them. Allen has IT, they didn't.

Shakir has had drop issues in the past as well, that's a valid concern. It was something pointed out in the draft process, he'll make spectacular catches but miss some easy ones.

  20. I love Shakir's awareness on the field. He goes up for balls and simultaneously contorts his body to protect himself and secure the catch. You saw McKenzie catch a 2nd down pass near the 1st down and didn't pick it up because tried to make more happen as opposed to just getting the first. I think that's a play you'd see Shakir make.

  21.

I knew their D wasn't good, but I didn't realize it was quite that bad.

I'd feel a lot better if Poyer or Hyde could go, so at least they'd have a vet in the backend to keep guys lined up properly and make sure they're all on the same page. Having Edmunds, Milano, and Taron playing is big though, they should at least make the intermediate throws in the middle of the field tough and help slow down the run game.

Hamlin and Johnson have been in the system for a while, so they should be good, and the young CB's have good heads on their shoulders. I have no doubt they're preaching 1/11th all week. Don't get caught cheating and let Hill run passed you. Who cares if you give up an easy 12 yard dig here and there, the offense will keep the pressure on their offense and the D-line will get home eventually.

Should be a fun game to watch.

  22. Watching some of the highlights and breakdowns of the fins/ravens game and it looks like Tua had more solid throws and plays than most are giving him credit for. Some of the big plays came on busted coverages, but he was moving in the pocket and hitting intermediate targets in stride with anticipation. Now these are highlights, so I'm not sure what other throws he missed, but he looked solid.

This is a very good test for the secondary, especially if they're out Hyde, Poyer, and Dane. They can't let Hill break short passes for huge gains and the front 4 has to get to him. It's a good thing Johnson and Hamlin have been in the system and should know it well, they'll need to play very well.

Considering their D is banged up too, I still see the Bills putting up more points and taking the win, but it might be quite the barn burner.

I'm looking forward to how they respond.
