JALEN RAMSEYCLOWNS BILLS QB JOSH ALLEN... DELETES
elroy16 replied to TucsonBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First Jamal Adams, now Ramsey? Like zow2 said, if this were a Bills player trolling another teams QB, I'd roll my eyes. It's not something to get upset about, but it's unnecessary. -
This guy will quickly become a fan favorite. The first thing he talks about is his home gym, including a his Sorinex Power Rack, and how he's looking for a house that can hold everything. He said there's something about having a gym where he sleeps so that he can get in a workout whenever he wants to. Later he talks about working out at the West Side Barbell gym in Columbus Ohio. He said it has an old school approach but said it's one of the best places he's worked out. He started working out there after buying some of their equipment and was invited to go work out there. Later he talks about running a "plumber's obstacle course" to get ready before a season in Washington. He talked about how important recovery is and the different techniques he uses to help his recovery. He had high praise for the Bills recovery equipment. http://www.wgr550.com/media/audio-channel/05-09-bills-dl-trent-murphy-one-bills-live This is presumably the home gym he talked about. Trent sounds like a blue collar, old school, gym rat. He's got an elite work ethic, long arms, big hands, and had the best 3 cone drill at his combine. He's going to be a very, very good player for the Bills. I absolutely love the players this FO is bringing in.

Murphy isn't going anywhere, that's just crazy talk. He's going to start and play a ton of snaps. https://www.cover1.net/film-breakdown-de-trent-murphy/ I don't see them trading Shady and they're definitely not releasing him. I doubt a team is going to trade a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a 30 year old running back that's making $9 million for the next two years. He's also going to be the number 1 option this year and certainly has the DNA that McDermott likes. It's not like with Sammy where you questioned his motivation. John Miller would be a slight surprise just because they don't have a lot of depth inside, but I wouldn't be shocked.

I've been bitter since the 49ers snatched Patrick Willis right before the Bills. Granted Lynch panned out and they got Poz later, but I really wanted Willis. Poz was solid, but it's kinda funny how similar the situation is now. Poz and Preston were solid MLB's, albeit not flashy or spectacular while Willis and Edmunds are much more athletic with a much higher ceiling. I'd be pretty happy if Edmunds panned out similar to Willis, hopefully a longer career though. -
How much practice can Allen get before Training Camp opens up?
elroy16 replied to Peevo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would hope that this is the case. They might not have had a lot from after the draft to now, maybe they just gave him the playbook and told him to dive into that. After this weekend's rookie mini-camp though, I'd like to think they're going to give him a bunch of stuff to work on between team activities. If I was Zay, Reilly, Proehl, or any of the other young WR's, I'd be running routes for Allen everyday. That'd help Allen get used to more talented WR's and the receivers used to catching his fastballs. In regards to his will to be better, it sounds like he's got that in spades. I can't imagine a better background instilling a strong work ethic in somebody, but at the same time, he seems to love football and want to be great. The proof is in the pudding, but that aspect sounds promising. -

Great breakdown. Like Juice said, seeing him make adjustments in game after getting beat is great to see. He'll get beat at times, but he's going to make a lot of plays. Before the draft I didn't realize how much of an athletic freak he is. I can't wait to watch him play. This makes me like the Star signing even more and having Phillips there to develop into another block occupying DT. That said, he's even got the length and size to stack and shed guards who do get the 2nd level. He's also basically like a DE when he comes on a blitz, RB's aren't going to have an easy time picking him up. I absolutely love this pick and can't wait to see him out there. -
I meant more so checking down to his outlet receiver if he can't find anyone open. A number of his "highlight" plays come from running around and finding guys deep, but at the same time, a number of his really bad interceptions come from these plays as well. Shady is fantastic at catching quick dump offs and making plays. That could help out Allen a lot. And yes, after captain checkdown and tyrod checking down entirely too often, I realize what I'm saying probably makes people cringe, but I won't budge. It is good to hear about how he had the ability to check to different plays and change protections based on what he saw pre-snap. He's coming in ahead of the curve in that regard, so that's at least something they won't have to build from the ground up. Here's a good video of Allen going over protections with Cousins.
-
I agree, they shouldn't try to run a dink and dunk, timing based WCO with Allen, but they should still run RPOs. Shady is still a great threat who will keep LBs honest which should help Allen get easy completions to receivers past the LBs over the middle of the field. He did it in college, so it wouldn't be brand new to him. Oh trust me, it felt weird typing. I brought it up because there are a lot of times while he's at Wyoming where he's standing in the pocket entirely too long and then forces bad throws, takes a sack, or scrambles. In college he can get away with some of that, especially the scrambling, but he's going to get himself banged up in a hurry if he keeps up style of play.
-
I'm interested to see how many RPO's they run and the complexity of them. He's accurate over the middle when he's in rhythm. Freeze the LB's and let him hit those quick slants. If the slant isn't open, chuck it to one of the outside receivers running a go. One thing I'm curious about is his ability/willingness to check down. In college you don't see him do it very often. With Shady, check downs can lead to big plays and I think that's a weapon that could help him a lot. I think they should start with a bunch of plays that are 2-3 reads top and then check down. They need to get him to speed up with progressions a little bit and learn to utilize Shady in the pass game when he isn't the primary target.

Nothing against Tolbert, it sounded like he was a great locker room presence, but they had to get better at backup running back. It'll be interesting to see how the RB position plays out this year with Shady and Ivory getting up there and no young back stepping up as viable option. They have a number of younger unproven guys, so it will be a good position to keep on eye on this training camp / pre-season. I love the moves they're making. Not necessarily because I love the player, but because their plan is clear. They needed a QB, so they went and got one they believe in. They were bad against the run, so they went out and worked on shoring up the middle of the defense. They were OK on pass defense because their pass rush wasn't great and MLB was just OK in coverage, so they got a pass rusher, a couple of DT's that hopefully can push the pocket, and a MLB that has the potential to be a beast in coverage. We'd all have loved to see a stud WR come in, but you can't do everything. With the late round WR picks and interest in Dez, it's clear they know they need to upgrade the position. I can understand some of the negativity, but for me I don't watch these college players or other NFL players to know enough about them to get too upset. As long as their moves make sense in the context of what needs to be improved, I'm on board. So far, they're doing a great job.

RD3, Pick 96: Harrison Phillips DT - Stanford
elroy16 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Honestly I have no idea. Given how many tackles he racked up while at 0/1 tech in college, it seems like he should have the ability to do more than just tie up blockers in the NFL. I don't know enough about the intricacies of 1-tech versus 3-tech in the NFL or McDermott's system to say for sure. -

He's not too bad of an athlete. He was top 10 at the combine for DL in vertical jump, 3 cone drill, 20 yard shuttle, and first in bench press. He's not an elite athlete, but I think he's plenty athletic, especially for a NT/1 tech DT, to be successful in the NFL. -
More importantly than athleticism and a nice wonderlic, by all accounts, Allen has the work ethic and desire required to be a successful QB. Do you guys remember the story about the Raiders staff giving Russel a blank DVD which they said had the game plan for the following Sunday on it, the next day they asked him if he watched it and he said yes. Russel's desire to be a good/great NFL QB just wasn't there.

If you only read the mock drafts or scouting reports, you'd think he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. There are certainly times where this appears to be the case, most notably on a few swing passes. On the other hand, when he gets his feet set and in line on those short throws, he's accurate. His accuracy on intermediate throws looks pretty damn good. I haven't watched a lot of the videos, but on deep posts and sideline comeback throws, he can rifle in a pretty pass. This throw, that's dropped, is a freaking dime. Corner route near the sideline, from the far hash, between two defenders and he puts in on the money. All of this is a messy pocket. He has an incompletion later in the game where he sails it, but you can see the WR has no chance and if he makes an accurate throw, it's getting picked off. There are other throws that should be more accurate, including the first throw on the linked video I put in. IMO, he looks a lot more accurate than he's perceived if you don't watch him yourself. You can put me in the group of, "Anyone but Allen" prior to the draft, but I'm definitely warming up to him.

This is a decent series on Josh Allen with Kirk Cousins. I especially like the 3rd one because they do some white board work. Allen is quick on the white board and goes through it without hesitation. Here's another one with Mayock where Mayock asks him about a specific play and Allen immediately remembers the coverage, what he thought he was going to see and what he should have done. Some of this stuff has made me feel a lot better about him as a prospect. Obviously translating it to the field where you have to make these decisions in a split second is a lot tougher than doing it on the white board, but it looks like he's got the mental capacity.
-
I refuse to click the link and give Silva clicks. He was so butt hurt for some reason last year when McDermott benched Tyrod. He said McDermott put his ego above the team and he didn't want the Bills to make the playoffs because of that decision. He also bashed Bills fans for defending the move and basically said we're idiots because he thinks Tyrod is an special QB because of his running ability and low turnover percentage. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Silva and McDermott went to the same high school and McDermott got the girl they both liked. His disdain for McDermott seriously feels that ridiculous.

Am I the only one that missed this on draft night?

The fallacy of Allen being the bigger "risk" than Rosen
elroy16 replied to Magox's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought they were going the other way with this regime. Giving up Sammy and Darby and then the guys they drafted all being more productive players versus potential. Drafting Peterman, a guy without a huge arm, but was supposed to be more pro ready. It has me wondering if Beane and McDermott aren't quite on the exact same page. I'm 100% with you, I really wanted a more ready QB, not another project based on their upside due to a big arm. They really swung for the fences in the first round by giving up a bunch of picks for Allen and Edmunds. At the beginning of the draft, I wanted a QB and a LB that could be the center piece of the defense. If, and that's a big freaking if, both these guys pan out, they could be center piece of each side of the ball in 2 years. That's exciting to think about, even if it doesn't feel like it's going to happen. -
Marcus Mosher: Most Important Stat for Each QB Prospect
elroy16 replied to DCOrange's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Did anyone listen to Warren Sharp on WGR last week? In all it was a meh interview, I was hoping they'd dig deeper into Warren's analytics, but anyway. At one point Warren mentioned he believes the above is a misconception and that first down is really the most important down. The reasoning (fairly self explanatory) is that you can avoid the difficult to convert 3rd and longs if you are successful on first downs. The reason I bring that up is because of what DCOrage highlighted from the article. Something that is interesting when comparing Rudolph and Jackson's third down numbers are Jackson's are very close in terms of completion % and YPA, he gets in trouble with the high number of INT's and low TD's. Rosen's red zone %'s make me a little nervous about him. -
Fred Jackson wall of fame or not?
elroy16 replied to Original Byrd Man's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Most definitely. -
He's not my first choice, but I think he has a good enough skill set to be a productive QB. It'll be pretty disappointing if they don't come away with any of the top 6 guys. Each of them has something I could use to talk myself into believing they'll be a good QB. I'd be surprised if all 6 went in the top 16, but certainly not the first round. Who knows, it's going to make for an entertaining first round though.
