Growing up in the 70's as a Bills fan, it is easy to forget how much we hated this guy. He was the Bill Belichick of his time, at least as far as Bills fans were concerned. I remember my uncle, my father, my older brother all just constantly harping on how much they hated "Tubs" Shula...one of the reasons always cited was that he "cheated", and had the officials in his pocket, because of his role on the NFL rules committee... I had almost forgot about that. But then tonight, watching Football Life, Dan Marino mentions, with a twinkle in his eyes that "yeah, he got some calls...but he was still a great coach" (paraphrasing). Of course, Czonka shared a great story to the contrary, saying that one time a teammate found a Raiders playbook in his locker, before they were playing in Oakland. Apparently (I didn't realize this) the Raiders were one of Shula's Achilles heels during the 70s. The Dolphins lost to the Raiders again, and as Czonka tells it, Shula told the players to destroy the playbook...he didn't want to win like that. Cool story. Also interesting hearing Steve Wyche (a Dolphins beat reporter in the 90's) site Shula's inability to beat the Bills during that era, was one of the great frustrations of the later part of his career. Guess I am just getting old....but as much as I absolutely despised him, hurts to see all the greats of yesteryear passing on. In retrospect, the way the Dolphins used to dominate the Bills only made the Bills pretty much returning the favor during the Kelly/Marino era, all the sweeter. Sports are a lot more fun with villains.... and Don Shula was a great one. RIP coach. Still hate the Dolphins....but you have earned my appreciation! If my brother was still alive, he would probably punch me for that!

Saw it in today's Onion! Jay Cutler’s Marriage Completion Percentage Drops To Zero -
I am sticking with first round picks, as it is just kind of absurd to rank all rounds against eachother...how many guys drafted since 2000 never made the team...or any any NFL team for that matter? Best: Tre'Davious White. Worst: All you saying Sammy Watkins, CJ Spiller, EJ Manuel, JP Losman or even Mike Williams are way off. The worst 1st round pick of this century was John McCargo. Marv (the worst GM the Bills have had in the last 30 years, by a longshot) traded up to get him, and he contributed absolutely nothing, in any game (save for a fumble recovery on a special teams play) to the Bills..or any other NFL team for that matter. He is was such a terrible pick, I would bet many here don't even remember him. PS- I love Marv Levy, the coach, but not as GM. My assessment of him as GM not only includes his terrible drafts, but hiring (and sticking us with) Dick Jauron, my least favorite Bills coach in my lifetime (me and the Bills go back to about 1972) when we already knew he wasn't a great head coach. That said, I will give him credit for the Kyle Williams pick.

Petty Whine - put it here. Let it all out

I have about $500 invested in Rolling Stones tickets for couple different shows this summer... it was supposed to be my first real vacation in a couple of years. Never imagined 6 weeks off with nothing to do, down one of two jobs. I may be having to ask Jagger & Richards for a stimulus check soon. -
Bucs apparently shopping OJ HOWARD
Buftex replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ironically, when I just assumed Brady would be returning to New England for 2020, I thought OJ Howard would be a player that the Patriots might target, to help him out..given his love of the tight end position. -
Jay Glazer: I will break big, national news tomorrow
Buftex replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly! I watch a decent amount of sports during normal times (tons of NFL, NHL and NBA) and I am not sure I have ever watched anything on FS1. Maybe a Texas Longhorns football game or two....but other than that? Not even on my radar. -
Bucs apparently shopping OJ HOWARD
Buftex replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have watched almost every Bucs game over the last 4 seasons...Howard is frustrating...he has so much talent, and every time you think he has started to assert himself as a major presence, he disappears again. I would definitely be interested, if the cost wasn't more than a later round pick. I thought Arians would do more with him this past season...and lord knows their passing game was super high powered...but OJ wasn't a big factor most games...not sure what it says about him. The Bucs passing game is fully stocked, with or without him. Winston was more comfortable with the other tight ends, for some reason. On a team with less receiving talent, I still think he could emerge as a really good receiving tight end. -

To be honest, he achieved his goal...I had no idea he had a tv show...but I DVR'd it and recorded it..now I know he has a show...the "big, big news" was pretty much nothing...but now we all now he has a nightly show....I had to look it up, figuring it was a radio show. -

Not trying to turn this into a political thread, but ultimately, the state governors will have more say in this than the president will. The governor of Ohio is already on record as being somewhat skeptical that sports will be happening in his state this fall. Rumors that the NCAA is already making a contingency plan for the 2020 college football season to be pushed to Feb-May of 2021. Of course, college is far more dependent on crowds showing up at stadiums than is the NFL, but you know...there is a big chance that things will be different this fall. -
Bob Dylan’s new song, “Murder Most Foul.”
Buftex replied to ChevyVanMiller's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I think the song is extremely relevant to the current state of the world. I think that is part of the reason it was released now, in the middle of this global event. -
Jay Glazer: I will break big, national news tomorrow
Buftex replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, there is no point in announcing any sort of cancellation or delay of the season, in April. Even if that were likely to happen, there would be no benefit to announcing it now. Interest in the draft (the only thing not cancelled in pro-sports)...and even if you thing Glazar is "breaking" a story that the NFL does not want out there, I think he is so entrenched in the NFL, he realizes it wouldn't benefit anyone or anything to break a story like that right now. -

David Carr Criticizes Winston’s workout
Buftex replied to BuffaloBills1998's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is a place on a roster for Winston. You don't have that kind of production, turnovers and all, and not wind up somewhere. How many teams has Fitz found a job with? I think Chris Simms makes a great point in the video. Some teams don't want a guy like Winston as a backup, because he is just too talented...he would create a QB controversy with some teams. -
I had season tickets from 1980- 1987 (got out just in time! )...there was some really bad QB play during that time..Joe Dufek anyone? Ferragamo, ultimately was pretty bad too, but for a couple of games, he was slinging it all over the field...more miles (and INTs) than TD's though. And, while I am sure he wasn't the first one, it was the first time I saw an NFL QB (a vetran at that) wearing a wrist band the size of a phone book, because he couldn't remember the playbook. If I remember, he was traded to Buffalo right before training camp started...he had a whole pre-season to remember the playbook. I remember being so embarrassed. It is much more common now, but back in those days, I had never seen anything like that before. They weren't running a real complex offense either...

uniforms I’d like to see us go back to for full time
Buftex replied to BuffaloBills1998's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Current uniforms are the best. -
As I recall, Ferragamo was pretty good in that game..they just couldn't get the ball in the end zone. I recall, for about the first 3 or 4 games of that season, there was a small glimmer of hope we might have some hope of not being as awful as 1984. Hopes died fast though...erragamo wamted out and got traded to Green Bay (maybe as bad as te Bills at that time), never to be heard from again..
