I just started and finished watching Breaking Bad
Buftex replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That is more like what I am thinking. Hank seems to be in a serious mode of feeling sorry for himself, and barely seems interested in physical therapy. Remember, last season, before he was shot up, he was kind of risking his whole career, because he felt like he was on the brink of figuring out who was making the blue crystal meth. He has brushed up against Walts' criminal activities a number of times. I suspect he starts becoming more suspcious of Walt as time goes on. He already suspects that Jesse Pinkman is somehow involved. You remember in the first season (maybe it was second) when he starts looking at Walts school lab, wondering how he wouldn't realize that certain equipment was missing? The stuff will start to accrue...and Walt seemed to have a need (almost) to confess to Hank...but he always reverts in speaking in euphimisms. I think Hank realizes his shooting wasn't some random act, and that will make him realize that he was close to discovering something. Imagine how he will feel when the answers he was lookig for were hiding in plain sight. -

Agreed. What makes these shows great is the nuance...withoug Skylar, as annoying as folks seem to find her, or Walt Jr, the whole story of Walter White loses a layer of interest. They are part of the conflict of the show. Without them, Walter White is just another bad guy on tv...not an "anti-hero", just a bad guy. That would get old...what I think about Sklyar is that she isn't as smart as she seems to think she is, and that may get in Walts way, sooner or later. I think her "brilliant" scheme, last season, of explaining Walts cash windfall (he went on a gambling jag) will come back to bite them. Hank is sitting in his bead, putting two and two together...why is he buying crystals on ebay? The only characters I ever hated on a tv show I liked, were Mr & Mrs Howell...camera time taken from Ginger and Marianne! -

I will bow to your superior intellect. However, you are ignoring the fact that the president has put spending cuts on the table, siginificant ones, and has been shot down, because he is also insisting on tax increases. Remember the whole hubub a week or so ago about corporate jet taxes? Please, you, LA, the rest, please just stop trying to pretend that you have some greater understanding of things...you are as biased as anyone else here. My dudgeon may be high, but don't pretend the rest of you are any different, going the other way. Most threads here (including this one) start with someone posting an article that confirms something they feel, the PPP wack pack chimes in, waiting for someone to agree or disagree with them...they will link sources that go play into their "Confirmation Bias", to score points...nothing is accomplished. The truth is usuall somewhere in the middle. Incidentally, I find it hilarious that I get blasted for bringing up the economy under Bush, yet, it is cool for you to bring up something that happened under Clinton, which got out of hand, under Bush, as the reason for the economic woes of the Bush years. So, Obama is responsible for everything on his watch, but Bush is off the hook, because Clinton, who had a robust economy, set up Bush for failure in this area? The blind hypocrisy that passes for intellect on PPP is remarkable. Talk about "confirmation bias"... -

Funny, I lent the whole series to a friend of mine, and his wife. They generally have good taste in movies, and tv stuff. They couldn't stand the show. They only wathced a few of them. The reason: "I can't stand any of the characters, except the brother in-law." They particularly hated Skylar and her sister. I remember, when we used to post here, about the Sopraons, when it was still new, the most constant comment was how much everyone hated Carmela Soprano. Agree about Gus's scene. That was chilling...I don't normally watch many series on commercial tv, so it was a little strange, when they came back from the commercial, just before that scene, the disclaimer: "Warning: the following segment may contain images or content that is disturbing to some viewers" or something like that...you knew we were in for something. I thought it was kind of "funny" the way Mike raised his gun during the whole thing. As for Gus's motivation, it seemed like Jesse kind of nailed it at the diner..."I may not be able to kill you, but you are going to wish you were dead." Great scene. Aaron Paul, to me, is as good as Bryan Cranston, in this show. -

Your right, Bush had nothing to do with this mess. Everything was in terrific shape when he left office...there was a job explosion, and we had a huge surplus of cash... It is looking like the Republican party is rustling up a whole bunch of terrific alternatives. And, since you really didn't read what I wrote, I am not suggesting it is all taxes, and I don't think anyone is. Whatever...there is no point in really discussing anything here...but like I said, should one of these dolts that the Republicans are banking on to get into the White House, how much time do you suggest we give them, before they are are to blame for everything? You don't like that part of the argument, because it is pretty indisputable. It may not be right for the President or his people to bring it up, but it takes brass balls, like McConnell apparently has, to pretend you and your constituents had nothing to do with it. btw- if Obama (love your "funny" ABM) is class B, what class are the Republican challengers? -

Yes, the hypocrisy is abundant, isn't it? Funny then, that most of the folks who post here love to point it out...take a look at some of the threads here...the first lady is a "fat B word" according to one of our illustrious posters, because she ate a cheeseburger and a shake while urging kids to watch what they eat...point out something that is hypocritical of a pet issue or personality from the right, and you are a simpleton who "just doesn't get it." -

Well...to say that your "first goal is to make sure" that somebody else doesn't get elected, is, to me, a pretty miserable thing to say, particularly in the context that it has been said. McConnell makes me think that working to strengthening the economy, right now, is not a priority to him. So, yeah, it does sound a little conspiratorial. And, it is a about as cynical, and unpatriotic an attitude than anyone can take to a negotiating table. The president, no matter who he is, whatever affiliation, has many more people to answer to than a single element, of a single political party. John Boehner repeats, over and over again, as if trying to convince himself, that that "American people" do not want tax increases...which, every poll shows, is not really true. People realize we are !@#$ed, and are willing to pay more...but it has to come from everyone. Nobody should be exempt from paying something. The Bush tax cuts, which Obama foolishly extended once, have not helped to create jobs...the notion that those who benefit from the tax cuts are somehow inherently "job creators" is just simply not true. The president has been willing to put everything on the table, to bring the debt down, but Republicans (maybe because they are so worried about the pledges that they love to sign) won't even talk about closing tax loopholes. It is true, this is the Democrats economy, because we have a Democrat in the White House. But, it is crazy to think that this debt didn't spiraling out of control long before Obama took office. If the Republicans don't want to be associated with this economy, great...let them continue to stonewall, and let it get worse...it will be theirs soon enough...and two years from now, the right will be crying about the debt that Michelle Bachmann inherited from Obama... -

It might be pathetic, but, you know, when the Republican Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell is on record, more than once, as saying that "my number one priority is to insure that Barack Obama is not re-elected in 2012"...and also goes on to say, if Obama was a Republican, he wouldn't be getting too much resistance from the Republican party about Libya, you do have to wonder. -
What I learned during the NFL lockout: "Bills-nation" consists of a lot of !@#$s. No, that makes them he-men...here!

Lighten up...it's time for football! Like you said (I think) the NFL and it's players are not "normal" in any regards, in comparison to other businesses...so just deal with that...if both sides can agree on how things should work, why should fans be so concerned? Personally, the labor thing means little to me, if the two sides agree on how things will work. The owners and players, apparently, realize that the NFL draft is a big part of what makes the league more successful than any other pro sport. And I am not talking about the interest that fans have in the draft, which increases by the year. It is the idea that you have 32 teams, some in more desirable cities than others...everyone can't play for the Cowboys, Dolphins or wherever...teams in Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and Baltimore (etc etc) can compete, with the higher profile cities, if they want. That, bigger picture, is better for the owners, the players and the fans. It is good for all involved. Sure, you are going to get the incidents where a guy doesn't like the situation he is in, and wants to go somewhere else. If a guy wants out bad enough, more often than not, his team will accommodate him. If you really have the need to feel self-conscious about enjoying football too much, worry more about the head injuries that the players are exposed to. I hate the new rules, the "softening" of the game, but I don't like the notion that young men are severely hampering their quality of life, in later years, for my entertainment. -
I grew up in Buffalo, moved away in my mid-20's, and have been in Austin for twenty years (as of September). It is funny, whenever I tell anyone I am from Buffalo, the first thing they say is either something about the miserable football team, or the miserable weather. I used to sort of agree, on the weather thing, but the longer I am in Texas, I realize, I never really hated the winter as much as most people tend to, and, at this point, I wonder, is 6 months of cold to bitter cold weather any worse than miserable, oppressive heat? It has been over 100 degrees here, everyday, going on a month, and we are only at mid-July. The hottest times here are usually in August-September...I can remember Christmas here, sweating my nads off in shorts and wife-beater. I really hate it. It is cool when you can go to the river, or something, but most of the week, just trying to get out, go to work, in crummy heat is just demoralizing. People think I am nuts, but, as much as I love Austin, the weather really makes me think seriously about leaving, more and more. I didn't leave Buffalo because of the weather. I always liked school, growing up...not to get too Oprah here, but, the reasons I never liked summer so much, I think, were more personal. I didn't get along with my father so well, growing up, and I had to spend a lot more time with him during the summer...I appreciate him more now, in my old age, but he was pretty tough, as a kid. Summer, for me, was just endless "projects" around the house, or even worse, being "furloughed" out to my uncle's farm in Pendleton for a week, to wash potatoes and other "fun" stuff... Looking back, it wasn't all bad, I just didn't enjoy it so much when I was living it...so, the reason I don't get all excited about summer.

I think this thread made me realize how much I never really liked summer time...too fuggin hot! So, all my favorite songs tend to be sort of melancholy...thought about "Paint It Black" ("I see the girls go buy, dressed in their summer close...I have to turn my head until my darkness goes"...great lyric) I realize, nobody actually watches these...but another great summer song: Summer Rain- Johnny Rivers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSLGneuOqxk

This is one of my favorite songs of all time...it just happens to be about summer...anyone with a heart will feel it...bittersweet...must say, this is not my favorite version, but it is the best one I can find on youtube...the one from the "Jonathan Sings" album is just stellar...

You are correct...but it is syndicated through CBS. Just like, the orignal Star Trek was on NBC, but is syndicated through CBS films, or whatever they call themselves... So, you are right...but I am not "w-ww-www-r-rr-rrr...." Okay? So I am "s-ss-sss-orree"

Mitch McConnel wants to surrender Congressional authority
Buftex replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yes, I do. You can't seperate Bush from the people who surrounded him. Don't forget too, the first part of GWB's first term, at least, he enjoyed a certain amount of good will from the other side of the aisle, not because everyone thought he was doing a wonderful job, but because they ran the risk, post 9/11, of being characterized as un-patriotic. I think Bush did a horrendous job, overall, in his first term, and his incompetence bled through everything. During his second term, he took on a much more arrogant, and cocky persona, toward his detractors, who were growing (with good reason) in legions. The use of scare tactics is nothing new, and to pretend Obama devised this concept is silly. Remember during the Bush years, when the terror threat levels went up, every time Bush was suffering from some malady? -

I think I know, but I am sure you will fill me in if (when) I am wrong: McConnel is deferring to Obama, because he believes, ultimately, Obama will have to have another debt ceiling increase next year, so the Republicans can keep the issue fresh on everyones mind, for the next presidential election. I know, he doesn't perceive his move as "throwing in the towel" at all...but his strategy gives his party of "no you can't" more fuel to distract from everything else, and at the same time, emboldens the Tea Party. It is a calculated move by McConnel...he wants to distract the American voting public from the fact that his party has no viable candidates (maybe Mitt?). They don't want to negotiate anything with the president, and want to pretend that the Republican party played no role in the current economic crisis...right?
