Obama Calls Sandra Fluke to Console Her
Buftex replied to 3rdnlng's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
No, I just thought it was funny, and absurd, that Jane Fonda had gotten involved in the story...I don't see where I denigrated you. By pointing out that I thought all the "men's health" initiatives being pushed by female politicians was actually kind of a clever way of making a point? Your juvenile attack on the sexuality of anyone who doesn't agree with you is pretty immature... Anyways I was just making a commentary on how silly this whole thing had become. Once Gloria Allred, or Jane Fonda get involved, you know the narrative has jumped the shark. -
Yes, that was really reaching, huh? I cannot wait for "Mad Men" to start again! Somehow, I don't think they will get a lot of the same viewers...but some! I will be one of them... "Mad Men" is one of my very favorites, all time. It appears that they are figuring out some new patterns to people dying, and re-generating, but they aren't letting us in on it. If the kid that Shayne killed turned into a zombie, relatively quickly, with no bites, the zombie population could become limitless... a few weeks ago they were saying something about "scratches" vs "bites"... that was a pretty cool visual at the end, the hillside covered with a massive zombie herd...

Okay...sorry, not going to get involved in another of your silly little pissing matches. You believe what you want to believe...not really sure what I said to piss you off, but as usual, your response says a lot about you. You believe what you want to believe...I will lay off you, because you have all the maturity of an 11 year old. -

Okay, not going back to read what I missed, but somehow Hanoi Jane has become part of this discussion? Wow... As for the link you posted, I think this is fuggin' hilarious (as I mentioned last time you posted something similar)... Virginia wants to force ultrasounds on women that aren't needed, and don't serve any purpose, other than trying to guilt a woman into doing something that is legal. Is insurance paying for this? Meanwhile, Arizona wants to make it legal for doctors to lie to women, so they won't, again, to discourage women from doing something that is perfectly in their legal rights. -
You could see it coming...but it was a pretty strong half hour...the final scene was pretty chilling...I think they are finally going to get off the farm! I have some serious questions, but I will hold back a day or two, to make sure everyone has seen it...

I have no strong feeling about which player the Bills pick, at #10 this April. For some reason though, WR's going that early make me a little nervous. I can't pretend to know enough about Floyd (or any college player for that matter) to be opposed to taking him. I realize that WR is a need for the Bills (their biggest, I don't know), so I would just assume they go strong after a top tier WR free agent, than address the need this early in the draft. It may be boring, but I would almost prefer them to address their issues on either the O or D lines, with this pick. But, whatever...I just hope they get a good player.

This just in...Jets went to Superbowl in February.

Funny thing is, Mushnick, at one time was one of the premiere east coast basketball writers. An old college professor of mine, in the early 80's (also a huge college hoops fanatic) used to read him religiously. I suspect guys like Mushnick are in the "if you can't beat them, join them" mode, as their careers wind down... what passes for journalism nowadays is far different than it was 30 years ago. I just read a really horrendously written article about Paul McCartney in Rolling Stone...it wasn't so much the essence of the ideas, but the writing itself. What strikes me most about the article, is how devoid it is of factual content. If this was Mushnick just spewing off some off the cuff remark on a sports talk radio show, or something, it would be pretty unremarkable. But, this is a seasoned sports journalist just "mailing it in" and, it appears, trying to appease a base, to which Bills fans don't belong. -

Wow...that is a pretty awful piece. There was a time when Phil Mushnick was considered one of the better sports journalist around... not sure what happened. He obviously doesn't really know what he is talking about. The article, short as it is, is just off on so many levels. I almost tempted to email him: phil.mushnick@nypost.com But, I will leave that to the more able-worded! -
I liked what he did his rookie year, I hope he continues to progress...I really like this kid. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/shutdown-corner-interview-buffalo-bills-dt-marcell-dareus-003854577.html

Obama Calls Sandra Fluke to Console Her

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bill-maher-defends-limbaughs-free-speech-rights-responds-to-false-equivalency-from-right/ “I don’t like it that people are made to disappear when they say something, or people try to make them disappear when they say something you don’t like. That’s America. Sometimes you’re made to feel uncomfortable, okay?” He said that all Limbaugh was guilty of was making an unfunny joke with a “disgusting sentiment” behind it. Maher clarified that he is in no way defending Limbaugh, but he is defending the idea of speaking out however one chooses in the public sphere as opposed to everyone just acting like “White House spokesmen.” And Maher even cited a statement from the ACLU, of all people, standing up for Limbaugh’s free speech. “And I hear people saying when they put pressure on his sponsors, ‘Oh, the system is working.’ No, it’s not. That’s the system being manipulated.” -
Jboy, for a minute there, I thought it it was 1975, and I was reading Xavier Hollanders' forum letters in my dad's Penthouse magazine!

Though I didn't hate the guy like so many here, Drew Bledsoe had some great nicknames: Drew DeadSlow & Drew Bedsore Those were the two best, IMO... And then, for Fitz there is "Ryan Pics-Patrick" None of them particularly flattering, but kind of clever.

By definition, anyone who participates in anything political is an activist to some degree. I will take your word that she is a lesbian, but I am not sure that is really even relevant to what she was planning to say. I apologize, I am really not trying to confuse the issue, I just think everyone has different things that they consider relevant. -

Yeah, I saw that. Limbaugh is trying to spin this into something else. Bottom line is, when companies (local or national) don't want to advertise during your radio show, it hurts the profits of the show, whether for Limbaugh, or the local affiliates that carry his show. If it stays that way (and I doubt it will), it would have a ripple affect on Limbaugh, his show, and his salary. I never heard of her, until last week. I suspect if she had been allowed to voice her concerns, most of us wouldn't have heard of her. So why are they being treated different? Yeah, I can see that. Did the "other board" mention if Fluke had hired Dunn's company, before, or after this whole silly thing? -

Having influence and donating are not necessarily the same thing. If we start analyzing where every donation is coming from, there would be a lot of cancelled checks. In some ways, that is very true... -

You have liberal friends? How can you stand them? People like Maher, no doubt...but he doesn't have near the influence over the left, as Rush does the right...people normally pre-clude stating their opinions of him with "I used to watch him on "Politically Incorrect"...10 years ago? He doesn't reach near as many folks as Limbaugh does. His views on religion have made him pretty unpopular with many Democrats as well. He is hardly the mainstream of the Democratic party. Not surprisingnly, I suppose, I would disagree that what Maher said about Palin was "far worse" than what Rush said. When you carry the influence that Limbaugh carries, and you take controversial things, you might get your hand slapped. Republcans/conservatives can slap at Maher all they want...they have their chance... -

Actually, I thought that was the only decent combo of the previous atrocities. Anyway, I thought Steve Johnson confirmed that they were going with blue pants for the road jerseys this year...that would be cool! -
Obama Calls Sandra Fluke to Console Her
Buftex replied to 3rdnlng's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Oh, I agree, I think what both of them said was offensive. I wasn't making an arguement that it wasn't. Your question was, "what is the difference" in the two situations. If Rush didn't have sponsors, he might have been called out by woman's groups or others (as Maher has been), but the slew of advertisers who dropped his show gave the story more and more legs. If Rush was in the same spot as Maher (no commercial sponsors), do you think he would have apologized? Not a chance. More than likely, it would have been just one of those periodic "Rush pisses off the left again" stories, and it would have gone away, like all of the others have. The totality of his comments went far beyond labeling Fluke as a "slut" or a "prostitute". He wasn't applying those words to her in any sort of euphemistic way(like Maher's "c" word), but in a very literal way. Rush had a valid political argument to make, but he just took it way beyond where he needed to...his point was made, but then it got very personal. Fluke was there to serve as a witness in front of this panel, she wasn't a public figure. This wasn't Nancy Pelosi, or Debbie Wasserman Schultz who are the ire of most Republicans. And then, there is the 400 pound gorilla in the room: Rush Limbaugh carrys much more influence in the Republican party than Maher does in the Democratic party. -
Crap...here I thought 46 was the new 60...for me anyways! I have been with sombebody 6 years older than me, for almost 10 years. I am 46, she is 52. Granted, it isn't quite the age difference that OP is talking about, but it has never once, in all that time, crossed my mind that she is "too old" for me. I think she is much more aware of our age difference than I am.

There are some differences in the situations. Not saying Maher's comments were appropriate, but I will say, as Rush defenders have been saying, the words might have been chosen poorly, but the essence of what the two men are saying, from their POV, is true. Rush issued an (very insincere) "apology", becuase his show is losing sponsors. Maher's only sponsor is HBO. If people really wanted to make him gravel, like Rush pretended to, they would cancel their HBO subscripitions. Given the tone of Rush's comments, he would have likely been happy to use the "c" word for Sandra Fluke, if he knew he could have gotten away with it. Maher doesn't have to adhere to the same FCC rules as Limbaugh. Rush can say he chose his words poorly, but it wasn't just the "slut" and "prostitute" terms, it was compounded by the ongoing (for three days) barrage of insults thrown at Fluke, encouraging her to post her porn videos, etc etc. This is all still a work in progress. The Obama super pac may just yet, return the Maher donation, because they will feel pressure to do so...the same reasons that Rush apologized. If this was some masterwork by the Obama people to disrtact attention from the economy (as has been suggested by many on the right) then the fact that it worked shows how idiotic they are. All Darryl Issa would have had to do is let Fluke read her short statement, say "thanks for playing" and none of this would have happened. -
Why do the last 12 years get lumped together
Buftex replied to PNW_Bills_Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hey, I have been as critical of this franchise as anyone over the last 5 years or so... but it hasn't stopped me from watching every single play, of every single game. I just like to see improvement somewhere. I have issues (sometimes serious issues) with Gailey's play calling at times, but I also think he has called some really excellent games as well. As stubborn as he has been about relying in the passing game a bit too much for my taste, I also see that the Bills are, finally, developing players. Under Jauron, IMO, very few players ever improved. -

Yup... 10 wins or 14 wins aren't very different... I happen to think the team is closer to turning the corner now, than they ever were under Jauron. They still have their problems, no doubt, but you can see improvement... under Jauron, the game of waiting for the other team to make more mistakes than your own team was just horrible football, and not very enjoyable in any way. -

To paraphrase one of my favorite lines from "The Sopranos": 3rdnlng as Tony Soprano (looking out the kitchen window, talking to his daughter): "It may be 2012 out there, but in this house, it's 1954!" -

My sentiments exactly. I gotta say, I was despondent by the end of the Jauron era. I have loved this team my whole life, been through more dark times than good times, but my love never diminished...until Jauron came along, and stayed too long. It had gotten to the point where I dreaded Sundays more than I looked forward to them. Jauron's teams were not only not very good, they managed to snuff out any trace of the fun of football, for me. To this day, I feel a little indebted to Terrell Owens, who, in his own way, I think, shamed the Bills (Mr Wilson?) into finally pulling the plug on Jaruon. TO's behavior and attitude were pretty exemplary during his season in Buffalo, but if you recall, he popped off about the way the offensive talent was being used after a misreable loss to the Titans...and was finally canned that week. Perry Fewell took over that last 7 weeks, and it just felt different, almost immediately. Now, I like Chan Gailey. I like his personality, and I think he is smart. I do wish, at times, he was less pass happy...but man, under him, this team has been so much more enjoyable to watch...even when the results haven't been what we would like. I realize, going into every season, only a few teams have a realistic chance of winning a Super Bowl, and I can live with the fact that it might be my team only once in a very blue moon...but my god, just make the games fun to watch. So far, Nix and Gailey deserve a lot of credit for making Bills football entertaining, once again. -

I think that is pretty funny... as for being bounced from office for wasting time, when did that become a standard for losing a political position?
