UPDATE: QB Vince Young Signs With Buffalo Bills
Buftex replied to BillsGuyInMalta's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's a clever line, which we have seen used over and over in this thread...but, if you think about the "skill set" that Edwards and Young bring to the table, they are pretty different. VY may be a bit immature for his age, but, honestly, if he is going to work out anywhere, I think Buffalo, with Gailey, and Gailey's offense, seems to be about as ideal a match as you could get. Andy Reid runs, essentially, a west-coast offense in Philly, as his base offense. Short, accurate passes are not VY's strong suit...Edwards may be a better fit for them. Gailey likes that "dual threat" guy...for all the criticism of Young, there is little doubt that the guy is a great athlete...he can throw the deep ball, and can run. If he does sign in Buffalo, and hasn't matured, and causes locker room issues, I also have little doubt that Gailey would be afraid to cut him. I suspect, any contract VY signs with the Bills will be of the 1-year variety. -
Be happy where you are...the further you cement your status here, they will just ask you to restructure, take a pay cut that is more "salary cap friendly"...and when you can't post anymore, they will just toss you aside for the new guy! There is no such thing as loyalty here...they'll hate you if your clever, and they despise a fool.

It's no secret that the NHL, as a league, is pretty much carried by about half the teams in the NHL...there is marginal interest in the game, outside of areas where there is no team. Franchises like the Phoenix Coyotes, always near the bottom (if not the very bottom) of league in attendance, ...maybe a Cup solidifies their base, but, I am pretty sure Carolina's numbers have dipped to their low levels again...these teams don't draw all that well in their home towns, and are not much of a draw on the road. So, while I can appreciate the hundreds of die-hard fans many of these teams have, their success does little to enhance the league.

And acting like one, since at least Sept. 03, 2001!

This post is a perfect example of PPP "jumping the shark"... congrats Dante!

The fans in Winnipeg went 15 years without a team so that Phoenix could have a team...Winnipeg Jets were amongst the top in attendance in their previous incarnation...Phoenix has been near the bottom, if not the bottom in attedence for most of their existence...I get your point, I am sure there are a few die-hard Phoenix Coyote fans, their devotion to their team shouldn't be discounted...but you don't think a Cup winning team would be more appreciated in one of the other cities?

I thought they picked him up late last season, from the Rams practice squad.

My wife and I were sitting, talking about our finances. We have really been struggling, trying to stretch a paycheck. She says to me "you are spending too much money, every month on beer. You have to give it up!" Then, I'm looking at the credit card bills, and see an $85 charge from Neiman Marcus. "What's this?" I ask her... "Oh, I purchased some make-up" she says. "So, I have to give up beer, but you can spend $85 on make-up? Why am I the one who always have to give things up?" I ask. "Honey, I have to have make-up, so I can look pretty for you" she says. I says "What the hell do you think the beer is for?"

So, you are not really a Bills fan I take it? I realize, favorite vs least favorite is subjective, but your logic, from your explanations, are lost on me. I happen to like all the guys on both of your lists...how Marv Levy and Darryl Talley could merit mention on a least favorite is beyond me...you say Marv was overrated, yet Ted Marchiabroda is "the architect", presumably, of the Bills Super Bowl era offenses? That totally discounts that Macrhiabroda's head coach (the "overrated" Marv Levy) gave TM the green light to allow Jim Kelly to run a non-conventional version of the already non-convetnional no-huddle offense, calling his own plays. While I will agree that Levy was sub-par (to put it mildly) as a GM, give him credit for realizing, rather quickly, that he wasn't the right man to steer that dysfunctional ship, as a GM, and getting out, before it got worse. To me, Marv Levy is one of the genuinely greatest elements in Buffalo Bills history. One of the rare instances that the owner going on the cheap paid off...the right man, at the right time. Though they lost all 4 Super Bowl appearences under Levy, I don't think there are many men who could have led that team there, that many times, consecutively. You hear it when those guys talk about Levy, he was almost a father figure to those guys, someone they had the ultimate respect for, and didn't want to let down...all the years, the only player I can ever recall having any issue with Levy was Fred Smerlas...and lets face it, those teams were comprised of some pretty immature men, with big egos. Lesser coaches than Levy would have had a difficult time pulling off what he did, IMO...

The Smothers Brothers?

Okay...so, it is down to a LA Kings/Phoenix Coyotes final in the West, and a combination of either Philly/New Jersey (probably NJ) verses Washington or NY Rangers in the East... Dan Briere is the only thing keeping me interested at this point...I can't stand any of these teams...what kind of crazy, mixed-up world when the Flyers would be the least offensive cup winners? btw- suspension for Griroux (sp?)is kind of BS...I don't think he was going for the head...the head was going for his shoulder.

No, pretty sure it was against the Redskins or the Chiefs...RJ running to the right sideline, threw across his body to the left sideline...perfect pass.

DML- I don't think anyone is booking flights for New Orleans just yet. And, I have been as down on this franchise as anyone in the last 5 years...but you have to admit, this off season, whether everything works out the way we hope, it is hard not to feel like something is different for the first time in quite a while. Now, like you, I am cautious, because I remember, when Tom Donohoe was running the show, we had some pretty great off-seasons as well... but, for the first time, it feels like the franchise is allowing us to dream, rather than tempering our enthusiasim about everything. Nothing wrong with trying to enjoy it. You are right, we need only to look at the Sabres as a local, cautionary tale. However, even with them, as disappointing as this season was, the committment from management/ownership still gives me a pretty optimistic feeling about that franchise...a team that is doing what it will take to get better...rather than one that is just existing, for the sake of existing. This off-season, the Bills have come a long way in that department, baby! Re-signing guys (Steve Johnson, Fred Jackson, etc) who, just two years ago, in the same situation would have been as good as gone, IMO. There are those who will claim that there is nothing new, that the Bills have always been mindful of success, rather than dollars...to them, I call BS. But, for whatever reason (I am not going to look the gift horse in the mouth) this off-season, it feels like Mr Wilson has given Buddy Nix the green-light to "go for it". This kind of stuff doesn't happen often, so why not enjoy it? -
Yeah I know he sucked...but he wasn't the worst QB we have had since 1996. In fact, if you ranked them, he would be closer to the top than the bottom.

THE BAD NEWS about FRED from Bull and Schlep
Buftex replied to shoretalk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For all the griping that folks to about WGR55, and I know it isn't perfect, I think they have really stepped up to the plate in covering the Bills, since obtaining the rights to their games. I also think Schoop, who takes the most ****, is probably just a little too smart for his own good...he has a very personal take on most things, and sometimes, I think it just takes him too long to make his point, so people write him off as being an a-hole. I don't mind him at all... -
If I recall, this was the infamous game where "some idiotic individual, obviously liquroed up" tried to tight-rope his way across Rich Stadium...caused a big delay in the game. Cosell went off on a tirade about the fans in Buffalo, and, IIRC, received death threats the next time the MNF crew showed up in Buffalo. Thanks (to Chandler too!) for the Shaw info...kind of miss the days when we didn't know all the off the field stuff! Have heard stories about racial problems in the locker room over the years, but never about Shaw.

THE BAD NEWS about FRED from Bull and Schlep

I have been listening, and I haven't heard them say this was bad in any way...I guess some people "hear" what they want to hear. -
Well, I am thinking it was the marriage thing...the look Don gives Megan, when he is watching her cooking...like he is kind of disappointed in her...she is turing into Betty? They kind of remind you that Don met Betty when she was a model for a fur coat ad. Actress/model not a big difference, perhaps? Betty always seemed like a woman who never grew up, but well educated...Megan is smart, but her ambition is to be an actress...I think Don is definitely disappointed in his wife...maybe realizing she is too young for him... I have been saying for weeks, I also think there have been an unusual number of suicide references this season...Pete seems like the obvious candidate. The guy falling out of the window in the opening credits may look like a comic book Don Draper, but is it just a generic ad man? Pete really wanted an office with a window...and he mentions to the life insurance salesmen (whose wife he latches on to, for one last grasp at happiness?) that his current insurance even has a provision for death in case of suicde, after 6 years...it may be too obvious, but Pete seems headed to that office window.

Well, it goes both ways...Andre Johnson was a good receiver, until Matt Schaub came to Houston, he became an elite reciever. I am not really trying to knock Fitzpatrick, but I honestly think the person making the point that the only difference between Schaub and Fitz is the talent around them, is just a little off...Schaub is more accurate, and has a substantially stronger arm. Big difference for an Andre Johnson type to have to adjust to catch every ball, as opposed to catching them in stride...

Yeah, that is the fragile thing I was talking about. Funny, but I don't remember the O-line being that horrendous during RJ's years, but that could be the fact that the only thing we would have to compare it too is how they played when Flutie was in the game... and Flutie was a much more unconventional QB than RJ. What was a little frustrating about RJ (and maybe this was a sign of the times he played in, when mobility wasn't as valued a QB commodity as it is now), the guy could run, and had decent speed...it was always his last resort though...a few 10-15 yard runs early in a game, might have slowed that pass rush down a bit. I think RJ might have fared better in Buffalo if he had a different backup QB...not blaming Flutie, but he (Flutie) wasn't one to defer, and I don't think RJ was mentally prepared to deal with the almost Tebowesque trance that Flutie had on Buffalo, and the NFL in general. I remember being at a regular season game in Buffalo, against the Chargers (2000 IIRC) where Johnson was having a really strong game...mostly a short yardage game...soemthing like 30 completions for 340 yards, a td pass...the Bills were moving the ball against a good Chargers defense, and RJ led them down the field, final 2 minutes, to tie the game up at 24..the whole game, the crowd was just booing Johnson mericelessly. I was kind of shocked...it was my first game, in Buffalo, during the RJ/Flutie years. RJ was playing well, but he wasn't Flutie...sure as ****, opening drive of OT, Johnson got hurt, the Bills defense held the Chargers, and then, Flutie came in and led the Bills to a winning field goal...the legend of Flutie just kept growing...

AJ, dig the new avatar! Hate the teams! That said, would much prefer the Flyers to advance than the friggin' Devils...if there is a New Jersey/Los Angeles final, I am not sure I could watch any of it. Looks like my Celtics and your 76ers are headed for a 2nd round playoff series. May the best villan win!

I have all the sympathy in the world for the guys who have suffered repeated concussions, but this is taking it to a new level of ludicrous...I give you Art Schlister: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sns-mct-football-concussions-to-blame-for-schlichters-20120505,0,7741065.story

Count me as one of the few who had great hope for RJ, up til the end. I know the body of work isn't impressive, but there were times, just plays here and there, where the guy looked like an elite QB...but, like Trent Edwards, and maybe JP Losman a little bit after him, his ego was just to fragile, and he thought too much...he thought too much, and got his clock cleaned more often than not. I wish I could find it, but I remember RJ throwning a pass, across his body, about 60 yards down field, opposite sideline, to, IIRC Eric Moulds, that maybe only John Elway could have pulled off...it was deadly accurate, like threading a needle, while scrambling...IIRC it was one of a handful of games he had, during his time, where you could kind of see why so many people thought he was something special...oh well.
