Famous people you've seen in person

I worked in the music industry, in some fashion or another, full time, for about 20 years...now just dabble part time. Ironically, when I got a "real" job, it involves making parking arraingements for large events at the University of Texas. Just found out, we are hosting a Vince Young Party in a few weeks... I won't be a name dropper, cuz I would say I have met hundreds of famous musicians, athletes and film stars over the years..I could never list them all... Most recent: Eva Longoria Kelly Clarkson Jeb Bush All-time favorites/highlights: Keith Richards Merle Haggard Pete Townsend Ray Davies Emmylou Harris Willie Nelson Joe Strummer Townes Van Zandt Mick Jones (The Clash) Jimmy Carter Bill Clinton George W Bush (not a fan of his politics, but I got a strong sense that he was a good man) Laura Bush Sarah Silverman Kevin McHale Dennis Johnson (Celtics) Patrick Ewing Barry Manilow Worst: Lou Reed (love his music, but not a very pleasent guy...who'd have known? ) Chrissie Hynde (see Lou Reed) Prince Tony Randle Dustin Hoffman Rick Perry Paul Stanley Karen Hughes (Bush Jr campaign manager when he was governor of Texas, served in his cabinet while prez) Kareem Abdul Jabbar Foxiest: Elle McPherson Liz Phair Leah Remini Minka Kelly Adrianne Palikci Eva Mendes Kelly Willis (country singer...ohh la la) Sara Evans I am sure I am leaving a ton out...just some highlights...when I first started meeting lots of famous people, I got pretty excited, and would ask for autographs, as long as other people were asking too...then I just started feeling stupid asking, so I just stopped, unless the meeting was one where the person was promoting a book, or record, and was there to push a product. -
The lines that got me: "Somebody has to stand up for the customer" But, you can sort of see his when he explains: But Wisth said he's not done fighting the great fish fight, nor is he finished with fish-fry Fridays at Chuck's Place. Heck, he still admits the food is irresistible. "They do have like some of the best pizza in town, if you like deep dish pizza," he told TMJ4. He plans to picket every Sunday until the restaurant lets him eat all he can eat.

Tashard Choice v. Johnny White
Buftex replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I kind of liked what I saw of Choice last year. He put up pretty solid numbers as a backup in Dallas, behind two other established guys...his average per carry was down about a yard, with Buffalo, but by the time he saw most of his playing time in a Bills uniform, the offense was pretty banged up. Sure, Spiller was better, but I am real comfortable with Choice as the #3 guy. White just looks like a straight ahead runner, with very little elusivness, to me. -
Is that the girl who did the voice of Linus in the original Peanuts?

Tashard Choice v. Johnny White
Buftex replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have no insight inot their special teams abilities, but I think Tashard over Johnny has got to be the choice. Choice got some playing time, abeit limited, in Dallas and showed flashes of being a very good running back. I realize Johnny White didn't play a ton, but what I saw of him didn't really impress me much...he seems like a sort of plodding runner...I think Choice is a bit more versatile. Given his history with Gailey, I think Choice will be on the opening day roster. -

Taking your kid to a Bills game
Buftex replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Went to my first game when I was 8, the first game played at Rich Stadium...August 1973 pre-season loss to the Redskins. I always wanted to go to a game at the Rockpile when my dad, uncle and brother would go...but it was "too rough" for a kid, they said. I was transfixed from that day on...I know the Ralph can be a little rough, but I would, seriously, take your kid to a pre-season game...not only are tickets much cheaper (even free if you know where to look) but if you take him when he is young, he isn't going to really know the difference. It is that whole experience of being in that crowd, the lights, seeing everything live. -
Yeah... also, they are starting to vaugely define Don's awareness that he may be "out of touch" with things...the week before, playing "Tomorrow Never Knows" (maybe my all-time favorite Beatles-Lennon song, or possibly "Don't Let Me Down") at Megans' suggestion...the shot afterwards, of him getting up out his chair and heading to bed...did he like what he heard, or was he just un-affected by it?

Bills' 10 best quarterbacks vs. Miami's 10 best
Buftex replied to tomdayfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This thread is so full of crazy assumptions and jumps in logic, it would be difficult to respond to them all...but this thread, as fun as it is, is a perfect example why you can't compare eras, and you have to put a players career in perspective, his role on the team, etc into some sort of perspective. To say that "all Frank did was have one half of a great game" is not accurate at all. He was the consumate back-up QB, and performed at a very high level, whenever he was called upon. Don't forget, it wasn't just the "Comeback" game...Reich stepped in for Kelly a few times during those Super Bowl runs, and came up big, virtually every time. Don't forget a huge game against the Dolphins that iced the division for us, or his first start, with the dramatic come from behind final moments victory on Monday Night against the Rams...that win was the difference between, not only the Bills winning their divison in 1989, but making the playoffs at all, with their 9-7 record. If I recall, Reich started three consecutive games, (Rams, Jets and Phins) all victories, for the Bickering Bills that year...not to say Kelly wouldn't have won some, or all, of them...but Reich answered the bell, time and again. Other than a season ending OT loss to the Lions the one season (Kelly was rested, as were many starters, in preperation for the playoffs) that tarnished the Bills perfect home record that year, Reichs contributions were the differences in winnig the AFC East, and ending up with the Conferences' best record, a few times...he wasn't as dynamic on the field as Kelly, but he got the job done, most any time he was called upon. Reich wasn't particularly good as a starter in Carolina, or with the Jets, but as a QB for the Bills, his contributions were very significant in conrtributing to what is, the "golden era" of the post-merger era of Bills football. As I mentioned in another post in this thread, go look at the history of the Bears and Lions QB position...the Bills and Dolphins don't look so pathetic, with shorter histories. -
Two things strike me about this thread: 1- It is cool that people are so excited about the Bills right now (I am one of them), but lets see what happens on the field, before we "crown their ass". Comparing Nix and Polian at this point in their careers is crazy... 2- The Leo Roth era is definitely over!

Bills' 10 best quarterbacks vs. Miami's 10 best
Buftex replied to tomdayfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When I first read your list, I was thinking "that's it? He has to be forgetting somebody" But, no that is it. Of course, I would probably put RJ over Shaw and Harris...but that is just me! I would probably rank Lamonica a little higher on the list, at least above Fitz at this point...of course, I am too young to have seen him play in Buffalo, and only vaguely remember him as a Raider...probably more from football cards than anything. But, his reputation as a Buffalo Bill was pretty high...my godfather (a die hard Notre Dame guy) would swear to this day, the Bills made a huge mistake in getting rid of Lamonica, and sticking with Kemp. The Bills first QB controversy! If you base it solely on what these guys did as Bills, it is a pretty short list, isn't it? Of course, when you think about it, much older teams, like the Bears and Lions would have a hard time coming up with 10 guys any better than the Bills had to offer. I will say, the first half of the 2002 season, Bledsoe's first 8 games, was probably the highest extended level of play I can recall from any Bills QB, including Kelly and Fergy...not saying he was better than either guy, but that was a great first half of a season, offensively...of course games 9-16 kind of canceled it out! -
Agreed on "The Killing". Lots of interesting things going on on "Mad Men". I think Betty's story (I realize a lot of people are at the "who cares" point with Betty) is kind of sad. Also kind of an important story. If I am doing my math right, Don is 40 in 1966...so he would actually be about 4 years older than my parents. I would bet that there were a lot of Betty Drapers born in that time...the show does have a bit of feminist POV from time to time, in between all the drinking and screwing. We kind of see the younger Megan, the "modern girl" who is pursuing her whims, while Betty took the older, more traditional approach, as far as what would have been expected of someone like her, during those times. So, now, her happiness is a casualty of the times. So, she eats...she eats a little too much, and hates herself for it...but she can't stop, because she is always hungry. But, along the way, despite her nasty turn in regards to telling Don's secret to Sally, she has become a better mother...her coldness with her children seems to have dissipated this season. I wonder if that was a conscious thing on Weiners' part, maybe succumbing, a little, to the fan sites that seem to have grown to hate the Betty Draper character. Also, seems like the "kids" at Sterling Cooper Draper & Pryce (Peggy and her crew) are starting to get a sense that what they do for a living isn't all that honorable. Peggy seemed almost envious of Megan's boldness in just quitting her job...a job that Peggy thought was her dream job. Also, it seems like something big is going to happen with Ginsberg...there is a big story with him that is going untold...it seems like he is going to become more than a bit player. Did you think Don "forgetting" Ginsbergs work, at the Sno-Ball meeting was Don being jealous, insecure and petty...or just knowing that his idea was the best? Early on, when that character came on board, I was sure that he and Peggy were going to be together...but I think he is there for something bigger...like something is going to boil over with he and Don. Ah...well, another good 48 minutes of tv!

Great game for the 76'ers. It was an ugly game, to be sure, looked more like a Flyers/Bruins game at times...Pierce and Allen have been mostly invisible since the second game against Atlanta...I assume they will wake up at some point...I know people hate Garnett, but I am damn proud of the way he has been playing...I thought, for such a physical game, there were some awfully ticky-tacky fouls on the Celtics down the stretch...Dick Stockton said that Doug Collins had been in the refs ear all night, about Garnett setting illegal screens, so why do they wait until the waning seconds of the game to call one? Funny things is, Garnett had his feet planted and didn't move them...questionable call...but that is the NBA. Sheesh! This is going to be a tough series for whoever wins...if the 76ers can keep up the defensive intensity, they could knock of the Celtics...but honestly, I saw the Celtics having a stinker in one of these first two games at home...can't wait until Wednesday!

Watched all the rookie mini-camp vids earlier...he does mention Corp in one of them, basically saying "he did some things well and needs to work on some things"...pretty much his standard assessment of everyone. I did notice, and perhaps it is the Vince Young "distraction" at work, but Gailey seemed to already be in full on, end of the season, irritation mode with the media! Every question they asked seemed to be a dumb one, to him...

This is a list of all-time favorites, not necessarily 5 Best Bills...if it were, pretty sure almost every list would look this, give or take a ranking or two: 1- OJ Simpson -his post-career life has ruined his reputation, but, undoubtedly, one of the very greatest running backs in the history of the NFL 2- Bruce Smith - All time leading NFL sack getter, one of the most dominant defensive players in the history of the league 3- Jim Kelly -a first ballot HOF QB, seemingly underappreciatd by some Bills fans, arguably the most important player in team history 4- Thurman Thomas -the guy who the Bills offense revolved around, in their most productive, and successful period- HOF 5- Cookie Gilchrist or Andre Reed -Reed is the leading WR in franchise history, always overshadowed. but undeniably extremely gifted and productive player. -Personally I am too young to remember Gilchrist, but, by most accounts, he was a truly dominating, physical running back, during his time. Of course, with his off field, and sideline antics, I suspect, had he played later for the Bills, and was just as dominant, he would wind up on just as many "least favorite" lists, as "favorites" There wouldn't be much room for discussion...what fun would that be? To me, the interesting thing is how many guys that are "favorites" land on so many "least favorites" in this thread... guys like Doug Flutie, Bruce Smith and Fred Smerlas, undeniably good, if not great, players, even after all theses years, are points of contention for Bills fans.

UPDATE: QB Vince Young Signs With Buffalo Bills
Buftex replied to BillsGuyInMalta's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Count me as one who likes this move...but also one who is also still a little mystified by the universal hate that seems to be directed at Thigpen. Let's face it, Gailey likes athletic guys, and he loves to have gadget players at his disposal. VY falls into that category....if Fitz plays well, and doesn't get hurt, I get the feeling that Gailey will still find some way to get VY into the game, in some capacity. I don't think he would be trying to find ways to get Tyler Thigpen in to the game... this is kind of like the whole Tebow/Jets thing...two very gifted athletes, who may not have conventional QB talents, but have had a knack for winning more games than they lose. Also, think it should be pointed out (it probably has been, but I can't read this whole thread), that the Bills offense, and Gailey, are likely as good a match VY as there is in the NFL. Supposed to go for dinner with friends tomorrow night...I might push for "Vince Young's Steak House"! -
The C's are definitely more experienced, and know how to win in the playoffs...what Kevin Garnett did last night was, honeslty, astounding. The problem the Celtics have right now, is consistancy. I don't see all their games during the regular season, but I would venture to guess, I saw, at least half of them, if not a little more...when they were good in this series against the Hawks, they looked better than they had all year...but, then, they always have at least one quarter per game, where they just can't get anything right...they will be on fire, shooting, and just go completely cold, as a unit...I suppose that happens to every team, most games...but it is hard to watch...a hungry team, like the 76ers, if they paly it right, can rip the game away from the C's during one of those down periods...Hawks came close to doing it to them last night, but Garnett just found his youth again...and Rondo is sneaky good. Pierce and Allen can be dominant offensively, or just diappear at times...but they never stop palying defense. What the Celtics can always rely on though, is their defense. They are a poor rebounding team, but play pretty tenacious D, 1-12...they have to, to be on this team. Even Ray Allen, the sharp shooter, will go all out...I think the Celtics will win...but it isn't going to be a sweep...it will go 6 games, maybe even 7. I wouldn't be surprised to see Philly blow the Celtics out in one of the first two games...but the Celtics always respond. I love the playoffs as well! Good luck!

In the NBA, in particular, the regular season and playoffs are very different. My Celtics have fared very well against the Heat in the regular season...not so much in the playoffs. When you are playing, and preparing to play the same team for two weeks straight, it is harder to get an edge on team, unless you are just better. For whatever reason the 76ers beat the Bulls, you have to give Doug Collins and his squad credit. After a surprisingly great start, they kind of backed their way into the playoffs, but were prepared to pounce on an opportunity when it presented itself against the Bulls.

Bring it on!!!!!

I will find it again, but the Sabres were in the top half of attendance as a road team, and near the top in home attendance...I suspect that all the Buffalo transplants all over the country make them a decent attraction on the road. Whenever you see them on tv, playing teams in the sun belt, it almost always sounds like a home game. Also, WNY is one of the top NHL hockey tv viewing areas for national games. As I recall, Phoenix was dead last in attendance this year, despite having a very good season. I realize the Sabres had lean times as well, but when you consider the size of the market, and the fact that, in reality, the team has had very little success on ice, they are still a remarkable draw.
