Slightly before my time (I was 9 months old when they won their second AFL Championship), but I think the coach in question was Joe Collier. He was Saban's D-coordinator during the championship seasons. Ralph hired him at 33, then the youngest coach ever in pro-football- Of course, he looked closer to 63...but people just looked older back then!

NBC announces new 'Sunday Night Football' broadcast crew:

I understand the vitriol for Collinsworth (though he doesn't bother me that much) but I don't get all the love for Tirico. He's alright, but pretty bland to my ears. -
It's a very modern-day slant on criminality: if I get away with it, I'm not guilty of anything.

How many prime time games do you think the Bills will play this season?
Buftex replied to tomur67's topic in The Stadium Wall
I love the prime-time games...but the I feel jipped when they aren't playing on Sunday afternoon! I don't know if it is an official rule, or just an unspoken rule...but I thought that teams prime time games were capped off at 6. -
Have you ever seen one of your teams go all the way?
Buftex replied to BillsPride12's topic in Off the Wall
I'm all about the Bills and Sabres...so no sweet taste of victory there. Before they sailed to San Diego, the Buffalo Braves were my #1 sports priority. Obviously, that didn't work out. I take a lot of ***** for it, but I adopted the Celtics as my team in the NBA. I loved the game, and we were suddenly without a team. I tried for a year to be a Clippers fan. I never get to see a game, they were never on in Buffalo...my only way of following them was reading the box-scores. Even with that, as they were a west-coast team, their scores didn't appear for two days, if at all. During the 1980 season, my cheap father, for some reason, decided to spring for cable tv. We got the Boston super-station. I had to choose between two teams I had never liked, prior to that. The Celtics or the Knicks. They were both on cable tv frequently. It was 1980, so yeah, I went with the front-running Larry Bird and the Celtics. While it isnt't quite the thrill I imagine a Bills or Sabres championship would be, but I have never regretted it, despite their up and down history over the last 30 years. The Celts have given me 4 championship teams to root for, in real time. 2008 was a thrill... high hopes for the 2021-22 Celtics...off to a thrilling start! -
My dislike for the Islanders back then, was only topped by my loathing of the Flyers. That said though, Bossy was the first player on an opposing team, in any sport for me, that I ever remember saying "wow, that guy is great". I know Gretzky and Ovechkin will get all the headlines, but Bossy belongs right up there with the very elite goal scorers of all-time. A great hockey player. RIP

I have contemplated this numerous times over the years. To be honest, I am not sure Jim's NFL career would have gone as well as it did, had he not rejected the Bills in 1983. Not because he needed the USFL to perfect his game.... but because the Bills franchise was entering "complete trainwreck" mode at that point Kelly was drafted. Sure, they finished 8-8 that season, with Joe Feguson at the helm, but that was coming off the fumes of what Chuck Knox had built. Wilson had a brief flirtation with successful football with Chuck Knox, but his miserly tendencies kicked in, and slammed that window shut, while it should have still been wide open. It took Kelly snubbing, and almost shaming the Bills (or Ralph Wilson), into committing to be better. That is why I always contend that while Jim Kelly may not have been the "greatest Buffalo Bill" of all time, talent wise (that honor belongs to Simpson and Smith, in my opinion) he was, by far, the most important Buffalo Bill of all time. Of course, you can't definitively know what would have happened...but my feeling is, if Kelly had gone straight to the NFL, there is a good chance he might have still been sitting behind Joe Ferguson for a year or maybe even two. And Ralph was just not into spending money at the time... without the public embarrassment of not being able to land Kelly, and suffering through back to back 2-14 seasons, Wilson may have been very content to just coast without being committed to winning, as had been his tendency for most of his stewardship of the franchise. I remember Joe Montana, after his career was over, reflecting that things could have gone much worse for him...if he had been drafted into another situation (say going to a franchise run by Norm Pollom and Hank Bullough, as opposed to Bill Walsh) we might not remember who he was. I think that is something to consider in considering Kelly's career. Going to the USFL was actually a blessing for the Bills.

What is your favorite football related phrase?
Buftex replied to Ethan in Cleveland's topic in The Stadium Wall
I actually thought that was a pretty funny one! -
Yes....Jessi was amazing...a real loss, and most don't know it. If I was a film-maker, and wanted to make a documentary, she would be the subject. Incredibly interesting, if short life.

I actually have a Jim Kelly Houston Gamblers jersey, somewhere... and they are the closest team to me. I guess I will be pulling for them...any team but New Jersey!

I think it is time we realize, anytime somebody gets an extension, we are going to think they are getting over-paid. Carr is decent...he just happens to be playing in an era where the game has changed so much, that about a third of the rosters in the league have a QB that will likely retire as that franchises best QB of all-time, statistically.

Watson is actually really good. I am not saying better than Allen...but I think cases can be made for all of them...in the end, who cares?

Taylor was a fantastic guitarist, no doubt... but personally, I don't think that is necessarily adding a better guitar player into the mix was the only thing that made that such a great period for the Stones. Brian Jones and Keith weren't exactly slouches either...though I realize Keith wasn't as technically gifted. Ronnie Wood is really underrated. Jagger/Richards songwriting in those years was, miraculously (given Keiths' state) sharp during that period. You didn't always know what they were singing, but you knew exactly what they meant. Has there ever been a nastier song than this: The Rolling Stones - Monkey Man (Official Lyric Video) - YouTube.url

Nothing the Beatles did excites me more than the Stones from 1968-1972. For me (and I realize this is all personal), "Beggar's Banquet", "Let It Bleed", "Get Your Ya-Ya's Out", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile On Main Street" is about as great as it gets. That period of Stones music especially is kind of template for everything I love about rock-n' roll. They may not have ever been the studio masters that the Beatles (and George Martin) were, but their music during that period was just so authentic... their brilliance can't be denied. There had been other great white, British blues acts before, but the Stones were the first ones to perfect the formula, and make it sound like it was coming from them...not just respectfully copying a sound. It wasn't stylized. They were living it. True art. Not easy to pull off, especially since it was all sounds and styles that had been around for decades. I can argue that the Beatles (1962-1970), and possibly David Bowie (1969-1980), had longer streaks of excellence than the Stones...but for me, neither ever matches the inspiration of those 5 years of Stones records. The Stones stuff that came before it (the Brian Jones era) and their albums from "Goats Head Soup" through "Some Girls" were only a notch below that truly golden-era. They will always have a slight edge over the rest, for me...no matter how long they stick around past their prime.

Which players on defense are you moving on from or releasing?
Buftex replied to intimidatortj's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm not an Edmunds hater by any means...but if it came down to it, I would prefer to lose him over Oliver. It's very true. Good teams find ways to keep their best players. -
Those Darlins - In The Wilderness (Official Video) - YouTube.url This would have made a killer Stones song....
-
I love them both...but push comes to shove, I'll take the Stones too...

Honestly, I think people get way too caught up in labels, and categories when it comes to music. Terms like "pop" and "rock" , and what those genre categories include, change over time. The Beatles and Stones were both great pop bands...they were also great rock bands. It gets way too controversial, especially when people flip out over things like who is inducted into the "rock -n' roll" hall of fame. Something can be "rock" and also be "pop".
-
It may have been true, up to a certain point...but after the Beatles put out Srgt Pepper, and the Stones put out Their Satanic Majesties Request, the Stones realized they didn't have to do follow the Beatles lead any more. The Stones were hardly the only band to fall into that trap... the Stones true artistry came after that with Beggar's Banquet where the Stones really became their own thing....***** Jack White...White Stripes sound like Led Zeppelin!

I can't overstate how much I hate GMFB!

Pretty sure I would have been at the Lords of the New Church show... that was my time, my era for the Continental. Never did see X back then, however.

I was a little younger when the charging Buffalo came around, but seem to remember most liked it. Not the red helmets though...they were always pretty ugly.
-
I really like them both. Roxy Music just kinda came out of nowhere. Couldn't pass it up. Didn't get great seats, but it should be a good show!
-
I saw X open up for Blondie a few years back... X was fantastic. $50 is a bargain, these days. For me, shows I have tickets for: Dale Watson- last week of April The Who- first week in May Roxy Music/St. Vincent - early September Roger Waters- early October Sure there will be plenty of smaller shows in between...I have really missed seeing live music, more than anything over the last two years.

If they ever bring back Terrence McGee, I am set!
