Now that this season is done, what's left for optimisim?
Prickly Pete replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Where did this idea come from? Do you mean in the off-season? Or do you mean hire Manning to come to Buffalo as a QB coach? Either way, what about developing Tyrod Taylor, do you think would appeal to Manning after he retires? Do you really believe a job with the Bills as a QB coach would appeal to him more than say, making truckloads of cash on television? -
It's the "little things" that are missing (all the things that the Patriots do right). Good clock management, good challenges, a tight 2-minute offense, special teams play... if any of these were a little better, this team would at least make the playoffs. Coaching.

Convince me that Robert Woods should stay

Before today, I would have agreed, but now I want to see a decent veteran free agent brought in. -

4 more years of mediocrity. Ryan was actually a step back after Marrone. That's bad. Tyrod needs to be more decisive. He might become more decisive, but I'm not confident that he will. The guy lost 20 yards on a 2-point conversion! -

This is the kind of football we have in store for the remainder of Ryan's contract. -
I have a creeping feeling we may see some EJM tomorrow...

Bills at Chiefs Predictions

Yep, but I always expect them to win. McCoy has been looking really good, and hopefully they will try to feature Watkins. The Chiefs are due for a loss. -

I really hope there isn't a letdown from the team this week, because I'm feeling it just on this board. -
I hate to admit it, but Taylor sucks
Prickly Pete replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, some of them were good enough to hang on as backups (where they had a chance to develop with a different set of coaches ,and "a new set of impatient fans). None were "good" (maybe Flutie, but I was thinking "post Flutie" which was "15 years ago" technically). None of those guys were gonna lead the Bills to much success. Maybe a wildcard birth ...MAYBE. Maybe they back into the playoffs ala the Browns with Anderson, if things the defense was really really good, for one season, and then back to suck. Maybe. I don't consider any of them some kind of "missed opportunity"....a guy that would have changed the course of the team. Nope. -

I think they all had good shots elsewhere, with teams that were just as anxious to have a starter as the Bills...but they continued to suck. Most teams fall off the map when their good QB is gone, so I don't believe there are enough to go around, and that the Bills (for a variety of reasons) have never had one this whole time. -

Me too. I thought he was done, but if the Bills had him now, they would be a real contender. He is the guy in all the "hindsighting", that they really missed out on. The guys that they missed in the draft I can give them a pass on, but Palmer should have been brought in for a look. I wonder if he was ever considered by the Bills? -

Prickly Pete replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The only thing wrong with this, is that NONE of the ex-Bill QB's have gone on to have success anywhere else. They all have sucked, and it wasn't the fan's, or the coach's fault. Referring to the Bills' fanbase as "impatient" is an insult. They are certainly no more impatient than any other fan base, and probably more patient. -

I agree with all of this, especially the bolded. I believe they will improve (like... next season), but in the meantime, Roman should have a simplified hurry-up offense in place. It's cost them games, and will cost them more. They should be working on it NOW. It's more important than a specific gameplan at this point. The only way to get to the playoffs is to be able to close out games with a score. I think Tyrod can win lots of games, but I'm not sold on him staying healthy. -
How bad is Bills coaching???
Prickly Pete replied to Dragonborn10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It seems like Roman is a guy who concentrates more on designing plays, than getting the offense running efficiently. Cool plays are nice, but when it's time to do the "hurry up" you need to have a simple and quick "alternate offense". The defense will usually be using a more basic attack too, so it's a whole different, accelerated game. The Patriots have mastered it, but most teams can at least get something going (even EJM with Marrone did). It's a huge handicap for this team whenever they need to comeback late in a game (or score at the end of the 1st Half for that matter). -
It's not just this game.

Other guys are catching the throws.

It appears that there is no "2-minute Offense", but instead they just try to play the regular offense, as fast as they can. That doesn't cut it in 2015. I don't think either Ryan or Roman are good game managers. And while I don't know what Thurman or Roman are like personality-wise, I would hope that one of them would be a detail obsessive ball-buster, to counter Ryan's "player's coach" approach. This team needs that. -
Me too. In college, he was so open that he didn't have to fight for catches. There was lots of speculation that he might not be tall enough, or have a good enough vertical jump, to become a dominate WR. Half his big plays in college were at or behind the line of scrimmage. He was never dominate in the Red Zone.

And maybe his height is holding him back a little. http://mmqb.si.com/2014/04/15/sammy-watkins-clemson-nfl-draft http://thebiglead.com/2014/04/22/nfl-draft-wide-receivers-shorter-than-6-foot-3-taken-in-the-top-10-since-2000-havent-fared-well/ But Watkins is just 6-foot-1 and at the NFL Draft Combine in February, his vertical leap was only 34 inches, which ranked him 27th among receivers who participated. As an NFL-obsessed friend noticed, here’s a look at how receivers shorter than 6-foot-3 who have been selected in the Top 10 since 2000 have fared. Bust city.

So what? There are lots of guys that make nice one hand grabs throughout the league. Lots of great catches each week. No one is questioning his skills (though I'm starting to wonder how good he is at positioning himself for a catch, or at fighting for a ball). The question is about where is his production.

Mike Pereira: Bills should have had one more play
Prickly Pete replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You're dreaming...They will be lucky if they win in KC on a short week after a huge emotional loss. Then there are the injuries. Then there are the bunch of games against teams that appear to be at about the same level as these BIlls, the middle 3rd of the the league. No way they win out and go 11-5. -

I see people complaining about the defense, or McKelvin, or the refs....none of that really mattered though, because in the end, they had the ball with 2-minutes left on the clock, but couldn't get anything going. If you were told the Bills would have that situation going into this game, most would have been pretty happy.
