I don't know that it's been so much the change itself, as the need to change because the guys that were brought in weren't any good (ya know what I mean?). Ralph Wilson rarely brought in top shelf coaches, or GM's, so changing most of those guys was probably the right choice. And again, when a team commits to say, "stopping the run", well I have to imagine that means loading up on guys that are better at stopping the run than the pass and/or scheming the defensive calls to stopping the run. Then the pass defense suffers....and then maybe points against goes up, so they have to pass more to catch up, so the running game weakens.....it's all inter-related.

Who cares? Last year we had a top defense, this year we have a top running game...throughout this crappy run there have been all kinds of nice performances, and individual achievements. These are empty accomplishments, and they just don't do it for me. I want wins. There is no guarantee that "this is something to build on", because they patch up one side, and a hole blows up on the other side. I do not get the sense that they are headed in the right direction, or there will be substantial overall improvement next season. I want wins.

Report: Peyton Manning linked to HGH, doping ring
Prickly Pete replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
AL Jazeera is probably the only network without an interest in the NFL. -
So it was't even the GOAT coach, but a player. Nice of Belichick, huh?

The Bills are out of it again. We have a clown for a coach, but people want to gloat over a minor mistake by what might be the greatest coach of all time. I realize that the Bills crappiness is a disappointment to all here, and maybe particularly a moderator, but don't take it out on me. Thanks so much.

Who cares, he has been clever enough to lead the Patriots to massive success, so a mistake now and then is no big deal. Considering the bumbling of Wrex Ryan, it's laughable to see any Bills fans gloating.

Nope. I'm in the "everybody does it" camp. -

Beat me to it. "I'm sick of this Tom Brady cheatin"....er, I mean "Peyton was just trying to get over an injury". -

Firing Rex could save Marcel Dareus Career
Prickly Pete replied to NastyNateSoldiers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Another thread to bookmark. Of course, it won't be very gratifying laying out the statements from the Wrex Believers after the team is once again a mess. -
The offense needs to change too

And don't forget the wacky gimmick plays that fool no one. -

And it not just the defense. I'm probably more concerned with the penalties, poor game management, and the emotional roller coaster that Wrex creates. The defense MIGHT get better, but I doubt the things I mentioned will change. -
Takeways, another very telling Ryan statistic

Then what happened this season? -

No, it wouldn't be easier than neutering, or firing Wrex. -

That would be great! -

See, I was disheartened then, but really believed it was just a matter of quarterbacking. And I believed they would be building on what they already had (meager as it was). It was like "well, we have a few pieces, and eventually we will hit on a QB". NOW it feels like we have to first sit through a dismantling of what was already here (and was at least pretty good). -

I brought this up (along with his crappy sack stats) a while back. He is a huge mistake, and now it's likely that we will have to sit through more crappy seasons...then another rebuild. I have never been this disheartened while looking forward. I have always felt, even with the worst coaches, that they were headed in the right direction ("they just need a QB"),...this year I'm resigned to 2 or 3 more years of mediocrity. -

I want Wrex gone, but Schwartz isn't a savior, and isn't coming back anyway. I think they should find a young up and coming guy to groom, and let him take over after a season or 2 of neutered Wrex Ryan. -

I don't know much about Wrex's contract, but I don't see why they can't bring in a new DC (who they "secretly" are positioning to take over for Wrex), and just insist that Wrex handles limited Head Coach duties. Wrex has too much on his plate. He should be working on things like getting communications more efficient, and player discipline, if he is no good at those tell him to "take a new interest in Special Teams". -
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06/25/sapp-digs-in-on-his-rice-strahan-assessment/ This applies to the argument, and it can't just be dismissed. Bruce was facing the best lineman on the field every time. I looked, but couldn't find a single Right Tackle in the Hall of Fame. Reggie White was playing in the NFC East for much of his career, and that division gets way more media devotion than any other. Reggie White's reputation benefited enough from that, that once the media proclaimed White the GOAT, it became accepted.
-
I think the key difference is that Smith went against the left tackles, where teams put their best lineman, while White went against right tackles. The drop off in talent between those linemen on almost every team, is large. How many Right Tackles are in the HoF? It's Bruce Smith at the top!

EJ deserves time on the field with first team offense.
Prickly Pete replied to gsurdam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Fair enough. I just think there are many crap QB's with jobs, and if he goes somewhere else, has a game or 2 of success, his reputation as "a decent back up" could sustain a 10+ year career. -

He has perfect size, good arm, and has won games in the NFL. He will get a shot to be a back up with another team, and MIGHT hang on. If he gets into a game or 2 as a back up somewhere, and doesn't blow it, he will be able to hang around. As he ages, hopefully he will become comfortable enough to lose his jitters. Again, I don't want him on the Bills roster, I am merely saying that I could see him hanging around long enough to have limited success as a guy off the bench. It's not really a big compliment.
